These towns were usually centered around one industry. The owner built the housing for rental or purchase by employees. After World War II you started to see the decline of these company towns.

You neglected to mention the town around the Swift Premium plant in the US or Hershey, Pennsylvania. Right here where I live in little Rhody, the town of Carolina was built by a cotton factory owner.
