stretch's dusttale is the most in character dust sans fangame, he doesn't properly remember resets, just a buildup of the Deja vu other monsters get. he's completely unsure if he's doing the right thing until you fight him, and eventually he becomes sure. He acts like sans, being a funny guy, but just a bit more murdery.

his fight, while incredibly brutal, ends right when you actually manage to hit him. and then he just, dies. there is no epic buildiup for phase 2, he doesn't have some moment or his "last stand". he literally just dies. the rather anticlimactic end adds way more to the fight than any of these "sad" phases and constant desperation. Sans is the "weakest" monster who just did what he had to. he was never a hero or had some other greater goals. he is just Sans. an ordinary person living his life. which is what made it special. making Sans "that guy" and "THE ultimate bossfight" in my opinion does disservice to his character. detracting from the genocide ending as a whole by distracting you from the fact what you actually did with the epic boss battle.

That's the thing. They're not really a sans fan game, they're just sans fights. It feels weird because you've never gotten a chance to actually do those things, but you're supposed to start off as level 19 or whatever level, making it seem like you did those things, even though you really didn't. It's also why there's so many dust sans fights.

@@kittensolder8818 Oh yeah, I forgot to mention..they set you on a genocide route already, so this usually means they weren't able to develop the rest of the game, whether it be because they didn't want to, or just couldn't imagine it. On top of that, sans fights are easy lore and easy reputation and money making for KZbinrs. Genocide routes are really easy for undertale creators to do, so that's why they're done the most, hence sans fights being worked on first before the rest of the game. But you don't have to do that. Take a look at TS!Underswap.

Bad idea maybe, but: sans has visions of past geno runs but instead of going nuts and killing everyone, he waits to see if you go about it. Why he remembers it is unspecified but implied to be Flowey after a geno run resets before killing Flowey to avoid the tainting of Chara. If you do, he prepares in advance a confrontation with you. As you progress, little things change like shops being closed off, no Papyrus encounter, less monsters appear per area, Undyne is more thorough in her pursuit and tracking of you. Many of the one hit fights change, Mad Dummy is doesn't become so angry that it becomes Glad and Mettaton doesn't go Neo. Undyne has a stealth sequence while Muffet has a chase sequence. When reaching the Judgement Hall, sans explains what's been going on, using what he's learned and seen to try and make a difference this time around, making your journey as arduous as possible. With you being woefully underprepared and sans being aware you likely already know his patterns, he creates a different fight. Not one that tries to be blindingly and unfairly hard but one that's unexpected, doing things he doesn't normally do and screwing with you like the original fight. As the fight progresses, more monsters join in the fight, adding their own attacks to the mix. At the end, sans gets tired like in the original as the monsters with him retreat or get killed, but instead of locking you in your turn forever he pulls a Jevil, pulling off an easy and almost lackluster attack and stopping the music before his next turn hits you with a chaotic, fast moving and last ditch effort move. After that fails, he simply gives up, taking the hit. The throne room is dark, and quiet. You're met with Asgore, who laments over sans' sacrifice and demise, before surrounding himself with the six human souls, starting an unwinnable battle against him. Unlike PS Flowey or Halo's Dustbelief Papyrus who have horrifying forms, Asgore's is more regal, demigod-like, aligning with his intents and desires for his people. Like Halo's Dustbelief, however, he absorbs your soul. Now, if you played neutral or pacifist, things would play as normal with some remarks by sans or Papyrus commenting on sans's different behavior. .... The idea for this whole thing would be making a fangame/concept thingy that stays more true to Undertale. I know the genocide route isn't supposed to be super engaging but Undertale Yellow, TS! Underswap and even Deltarune pull off doing otherwise very well. I also wanna make a more in character sans that isn't edgy for the sake of it or takes up the whole show. What do you think?

Honestly, what I'm gonna say prob won't happen because of videogame reasons and the need for a plot, but yknow how og sans pulled the "well, it's my turn, forever, so you can't do anything"? I feel like with loads of other monsters it basically makes him win, plus Asgore being able to destroy the buttons makes sure of it (unless a fixed fight button appears out of nowhere during the monsters' attacks, in that case, crap)

Another problem with Sans fangames is that you already know how it's going to end more often than not - you win, no surprise. You might as well not bother getting emotionally attached as you know it'll just end with you defeating them anyway once you learn the attacks (which is beautifully ironic in itself, given that's reminiscent of Flowey's whole soulless arc).

You should do a video on how a lot of fangames fail to capture one of the many things that made Undertale so charming in the first place, that thing being its low quality and simplicity. A lot of fangames are so focused on stuff like "Good Graphics" or "How detailed the sprites and animations are" while failing to realize that Undertale got it's charm from how the graphics were very simplistic and under detailed. Even good fangames like Undertale Yellow kinda suffer from this issue. This isn't to say that having good looking sprites in your fangame is bad but I feel like having too much detail kinda goes against Undertale (and to an extent, Deltarune's) design philosophy.

One extra thing is how they fight, Sans in the base game is stalling for time, drawing things out and trying to bore, or discourage you while keeping himself alive to ensure the deed is fully done. Half these fanganes have sans attack as if his one and only goal is defeating you like you don't have the miraculous power to turn back the clock, they don't even bother with his final gambit of standing there... menacingly!

Yknow, i saw a dusttale vid where sans didnt actually kill papyrus, and they team up against you instead. Like, papyrus tries to get you to spare them, when you attack papyrus, sans steps in and barely survives the attack with some hp left (this time being justified, since, yknow, dusttale.), and then they fight you. While this is ultimately a dusttale take that results in sans killing everyone to stop, it does seem to try to keep sans in-character as much as it can. infact, from what i saw in the dialogue of that vid, im pretty sure that sans and papyrus in this take are aware about the previous geno runs because flowey told them about it.

Because most Sans focused fan games focus only on this one aspect, many other aspects are either left in the background or just are thrown out of the window. Resulting in over saturation because of hyperfixation with revenge aspect while others just remain invisible for those creating fan games but that is starting to change recently. The only reason why he doesn't kill you or isn't trying is because of promise he made to a person very dear to him, otherwise he would absolutely try.

Over saturation of fanon can absolutely *distort* the view of canon it happened many times, let's not forget that fanon has a lot of power to make people outside of fandom perceive game what it absolutely isn't (have misconception about characters, the plot, world building etc.) which in turn might damage reputation of the game even if done unintentionally. That has happened many times before. Sure it is about having fun but sometimes it's better to think about consequences of your work and how it will affect people inside and outside of community. It's not about being accurate for no reason it's about not distorting someone's else's piece of art that they put time, rage, frustration, happiness, skills, passion and their whole being into. It's like drawing the same portrait of a woman in the same setting with completely different twist and messages that differ from what original artist had in mind and calling it Original Mona Lisa by Leonardo Da Vinci.

I'm curious, what are examples of sans fangames (other than Dusttale and tears) that have sans terribly out of character for no good reason? A lot of the games I run into are games that do try and give some backstory (even in a small increment, such as a simple story panel intro) that initiate sans being different.

Another thing I often don't see people realise about fangames is that they're usually on a bit of a time and talent budget. In order to make something fully fledged and polished, that's cohesive and masterfully done would take years to do and mad skills to preform. Just look at Undertale Yellow, lol. So then, it might be in the creator's best interest to expand upon the portion of the story that moved them the most.

I was able to successfully beat Sans after 120 attempts which goes to show why he's so difficult. I ditched the real knife and the heart locket and went back to waterfall so I could buy the cloudy glasses. The Sans fight first attempt, I survived his firsr attack with 1 HP and it was the torn notebook that saved me since invincibility frames while completely ignored play a role in slowing down how much HP you lose per second. You have 2 bars when choosing to fight compared to the real knife but trust me when I say this: You're better off with the cloudy glasses and torn notebook for the entire fight. Your HP will drain a little slower while having the cloudy glasses and torn notebook.

but i mean it's not because they're not similar to canon i seen some Hella sad sans comic's but they go over sans potential what we of sans is that he knows about your lives (not to a full extent) and also knows about saves. In fanon he knows resets which simply not true. a main excuse of why sans knows this is because he knows about resets. even the actual sans doesn't Know' about resets. edit: the reason we don't feel like we didn't do anything is because once again it was in a different timeline, sans may know about timelines(speculation) but he can't ACESS these timelines. this like something like promise sans just doesn't feel right.

To clarify the comment I left in case people get the wrong idea, I'm fine with fangames having their own visual flair, my issue is when they try to make everything look way too detailed or go way too hard on the animation and sprites Like part of the reason why I find Undertale soo funny to begin with is because everything looks like complete shit, like Toby Fox could've very easily just given Papyrus a proper animation for when leaves an area but instead he just has him either float out of area or speed walk Similarly in Deltarune, he could've given Kris and the Gang proper running animations like the ones seen in Deltatraveller for example, but instead he just has them speed walk when you hold down the run key. I think it kinda comes down to how a lot fangame creators tend to hold themselves to a really high standard and try to make sure that everything "looks good" and I feel that takes away from the charm an Undertale fangame can bring. Plus like Toby's own standard is pretty low to begin with, the dude's had his friends draw well designed sprites for Undertale and Deltarune and purposely gone out of his way to make them look shitty. This even applies to some of the fan designs I see for the Seven Human Souls, people tend to overdesign them and they always stand out in comparison to Frisk and Chara. Its especially weird for me since I always kinda just headcanoned that they all wore differently colored striped shirts. I apologize if this is like really long or what not, its just that a lot of the Undertale fangames that I've played have never really managed to make me laugh as much as Undertale did and I feel like this is why, plus I saw a tweet recently that was like "Would you have preferred if Undertale Yellow looked like shit" and like, yes, yes I would've lol.

Dusttale by Evan is a sans fangame tho, in dusttale au sans basically is a main character where he gets modified the most. TS!Underswap on other hand is a completely different case here. U could also give an example of cringe emotional san on actually existing fangames and not overexaggerated made up scenarios. Or just something more detailed. All these edgy genocide fangames look to me rather to be for the sake of cool slaughterhouse with fanservice than for the sake of the some actual plot. Basically not that bad, tho still a more properly developed plot-stuff could had a more satisfying fanservice just cuz it'd look better. Gotta give u a credit for talking about unrealistic actions taken in these fanbattles, that, i gotta basically quote, u don't feel anything for something u didn't commit. It's *𝐀 𝐂 𝐂 𝐔 𝐑 𝐀 𝐓 𝐄* I actually don't mind the emotional sans stuff, gotta paste it here too, I do want from fanworks to develop the og putting it into different situations that'd cause it to change, basically sans to turn emotional. I think the idea of a “Sans Fangame” is just fundamentally flawed. What made the sans fight so great was that it was only a PART of a greater narrative. These “emotional” fan games simply don’t have enough context in their isolated worlds to warrant any emotional reaction. There is no point, there is NOTHING that these fan games are trying to say. With all that spectacle using that little substance, you cant expect me to take it seriously. This is why I like segasonic’s distrust 2: the cooler edition. It knows what it’s trying to be. It’s just another Sans fangame. It cuts the “emotional” bullshit and gets straight to the point opting to be funny instead of being sad.

Side note on the tears in the rain fangame you mentioned. I’d say it’s good supplementary material after playing the first game. You have enough emotional context with the original game to understand why sans would confront you like this, and keeping him in character is important when making a game like this.

It can work so long as it makes sense and the characters are IN CHARACTER. If it’s just in its own isolated AU. It’s important that you make THE REST OF THE AU before making the sans fight.

A lot of the undertale fandom are kids, and don't have a solid grasp of proper english grammer and spelling. Or they're teenagers who don't listen in their English classes. It's disappointing to see people put in time to program and animate their own things, but it's terribly ineligible.
