In all the previous games he's had about 3 guys marking him making sure he couldn't get on his left, that meant he had infinite space to slaughter them on the outside but not be able to get many touches in the box. It almost felt like Southgate realized the best way to get the best out of England is to get the best out of Saka. He put Foden on the right instead of the left to create an overload, pulling defenders away from him and giving him more options.

We are getting slightly slightly better, I think the Denmark or Slovenia game (forgotten which) where England were constantly losing the ball and unable to even make passes was the worst performance.

another reason why saka was better is because of foden. foden being a positional player occupied the half spaces which created more 1v1 for saka who's also a positional player and whenever foden got the ball who tried to play saka in behind. but with bellingham it was not possible as he doesn't stick to his position always drifting. so he couldn't combine well with saka and there was overload whenever saka had the ball as he was always alone.

The combinations on that side with Mainoo, Foden and Saka could really develop nicely. If they can balance the left (Trippier for Gordon/Shaw) and drop Kane they might actually start creating some more chances. I'd even prefer putting Bellingham through the middle instead of Kane.

Oh cut the crap. Foden is dogshit. Did nothing but sideway passes and lose the ball. Bellingham suffered because his position was taken over by Foden and Kane, those two kept dropping deep and occupied the central area, so he has to make the run those two refused to do every game. Saka didn't have that many 1v1 chances, he just did what a winger supposed to do, run at the defend and he did it splendidly. And did you see Fodens asking for the ball when Saka shot the equalising goal? The nerve..

I agree on the Shaw front, Trippier on the left just slowed the pace right down when he switched foot. Not only did it take away a lot of options, but it made us that bit more predictable. They knew not to worry about crosses from left wing and to expect back passes.

Sorry, but Saka should have really berated Kane for not making runs towards the ball etc. Yes, he IS a great scorer, but you can’t live on past performances. In this game, as in the other games, Kane is mostly waiting for the ball and hasn’t the necessary speed to make those runs you need to make at international level. Kanes not doing enough to dispel the rumour that he is cursed - that he’ll never win a trophy. Remember, the team won with him NOT on the pitch 🙄

It was really frustrating to watch England play like that. That performance is not acceptable as per player's quality. I don't know when Southgate will realise this. Most of the times wingers were constantly isolated with no support when attacking. Players are not making runs in between to create space and free other players. Harry wasn't making runs for the crosses. What I noticed was, when England was attacking, outside the Switzerland box in central area there was no one. Compared to Switzerland, England press were shiit. Worked few times but it was shiit. Instead of passing and looking for options, knob heads were talking shots (which were blocked by defence). The fact that, they need to reach to shootout to win is embarrassing.

Kane is the weakest link in this formation, he was 5 yards short for one of Sakas crosses into the box and was just jogging to it, he clearly isn’t fit and you need a quick striker to compliment this set up correctly.

Just another last minute stroke of luck from a good player to rescue a poor manager, with a game that goes all the way to pens. Seriously lacking anything that looks like an attacking and fluid team. Poor management throughout and the players are out speaking to the media with the lines that keep a poor manager in a job. If this squad of players had an Ancelotti or Fuente in charge you'd see systems of play that used the players strengths in attack. It's been clear for years that Southgate is rescued by the players been good, not by his tactics.

Agreed, they are definitely getting through based on the quality of the players finding moments to crack off lucky shots. Nothing to do with strategy, although I do agree it was an improvement on previous games (a low bar). I think that's why Southgate is reluctant to make subs, he needs to just pray someone pulls a rabbit out of a hat for him.

I think he got a lot of slack for falling too deep in previous games, it didn't give many options once we had possession. That being said, even though he didn't fall back very much and so wasn't just running back and for this match, it still didn't feel like he was in the box when they needed him?
