As a neutral watching from afar in New Zealand... I have to say I was horrified at the Caddy walking onto the green and celebrating like that. I have no problem with the hat waving, that was great from both sides. A caddy needs to know his place, and it is not front and center. No matter who you have worked for in the past. Then to engage with Rory after being asked to move away is incredible... and then the caddy turns and comes back for more... and then you can read his lips yelling and swearing at the European players who are objecting. He should be fined heavily and never appear in a Ryder Cup again. It made me want to cheer for the European team, so I did, and I am convinced it helped them win on the final day. A public apology at the very least is needed, but somehow I don't think Joe Lacava has it inside to admit he got it so so wrong.

Spot on. Joe is a top caddy like Steve Williams I can imagine Steve doing the same aswell it’s just human nature boiling over. The abuse the overseas players receive is disgusting. It’s the same in the states for the European players. The only thing I can suggest is to ban alcohol at least whilst the matches are taking part.

@@markanderson8006 You seem very mixed up. Our friend from New Zealand is rightly, and severely, criticising LaCava. You seem to be defending him. There was no abuse of the visitors -- cap-raising was teasing, but harmless. Remember the abuse levelled at Montgomerie in particularly at Brookline, where the player/wives/caddies behaviour was a disgrace unequalled in modern golf? Do Americans not KNOW the etiquette of golf, where you do not get on a green until ALL players have finished playing the hole? Or do they just not give a *^%, their usual attitude?

1. Europe played better - on and off the course. While the US says they were such a close knit group it's clear the Europeans are even closer and bond over the team format to a high degree. Europe just cares more period even when they lost in 21 you could see how upset they were. While Rory was over the top in how he acted that kind of passion helped his team on Sunday and they rallied by him. 2. US left off some players who were clearly playing better than Fowler, Thomas, Morikawa, Burns and Spieth (btw I am a huge Spieth fan but he didn't look good in the Fed Ex) and those players include - Lucas Glover, Bradley and you can argue Bryson and DJ.

The issue with our US team is the excuse making…and sadly the media gets behind it as well. There is nothing wrong with the schedule. The Euros played warm up games… the US didn’t? Why?… Hold these guys accountable! But the truth is, the US guys think being friends with each other make them a great “team”. The Euros sacrifice and prepare for weeks (time, money, effort). That’s foundation for their play as well being a strong unit. What’s crazy to think is the US fans and media really do care more about the event than the US players themselves.

No one on the US team was on the same level as Rahm, Hovland and McIlroy. Once a team in these events has three guys who are head and shoulders above, the other team is in a deep hole. Just for a bonus, Fleetwood and Hatton were an even match for anyone on the US team.

Agreed I think your assessment is spot on. The European team leaders played better than the American team leaders. Also I will always maintain that this event just means more to the Europeans. Golf is such an individual sport and for many years the Euros had to build this team first culture to overcome the American teams. I mean they were so clearly not underdogs this go around but they maintain that mindset which works for them and strengthens team camaraderie. To the Europeans the Ryder Cup is like a major. I mean how often do you see less known European players just playing out of their mind in the Ryder Cup. For me the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup matter very little. Team Golf doesn’t interest me much. Bottom line nothing but respect for the European team. They played wonderful golf.

@@m1ndfunkk234 can you imagine the US locker room having a locker reserved for Jack or Tiger? The Euro's had a locker for Seve - he's like the 13th man on the team. It's all about the culture of playing for more than just yourself. Rose/Macintyre and Hovland/Aberg pairings showed that - huge disparity in experience and success but they are all treated as equals by each other and by the captain and vice captains. Seve is the only one treated as someone special because he was the one who put European golf on an equal footing with the US and paved the way for all the current generation to do what they do. I don't think the US team ever had that culture while Tiger and Phil were on the team and whatever worked in 2021 didn't make the trip to Italy this time.

Since we became Team Europe in 1979 we have won 13 times the US have won 9 times. Not once in all that time have we ever come close to being the better team based on World Rankings yet still we have held the upper hand for 40 plus years? Since we last lost at home in 1993, we have recorded three away victories to your one. You guys dont need to look at changing anything other than your attitude and core beliefs, maybe there is a better way for you to select your team that better reflects the motivations of the European team. For put simply we are better at one thing and that is being a team rather than a group of individuals. We have always been greater than the sum of the parts.

@VLind-uk6mb
@VLind-uk6mb 11 ай бұрын
I often saw British TV shows where a character would say, usually in disgust to some unwashed type, "You don't discuss BUSINESS on a golf course!" In the US, that's what golf is for. That basically sums up the difference between the two cultures. America is and always has been about money -- it was founded on a tax revolt, which continues to this day (explaining why you are the only country in the civilised world without universal health care) and the market. Europe is about civilisation, philosophy, art, enlightenment, values that go beyond the monetary value of everything. The European dream is peace. The American dream is financial. As for the Ryder Cup: there is no player on the US team who is not a multi, multi millionaire. That is not true of the European team: players like Aberg, Hojgaard and McIntyre have not made that much yet. Nobody needs money less than the US players do, yet they cannot seem to want to take a step without millions changing hands. There is professionalism, and wanting to earn what you deserve within that profession, and greed. The Europeans did not lose much, except future captains, when some of their players decamped to LIV: these were players whose careers, for the most part, were drawing to a natural close. But the US players who went were at the top of their game, massive earners already, and just went to see how far the Saudi Sovereign Fund would stretch to get them. It cost the US team some very good players. Koepka should never have been allowed on to that team, as it clearly bred some resentment. But if the PGA was prepared to have him, why not DJ, GOOCH -- the winningest player on LIV -- or even the reprehensible Reed, who is a Class A jerk but a Ryder Cup enthusiast who whips up team feeling like nobody else? As a European I'm glad they didn't, and I may be slightly relieved that the very on-form Bradley was overlooked to fit Koepka in. But the US has to make up its mind -- this PGAT-LIV deal is not done yet.

@@VLind-uk6mb Depends on how you weigh the different parts of the season. Rahm won 4 times on the US Tour early in the year, capping it with his comeback win at the Masters. He cooled down after that, but did have top 10 finishes at the US Open and Open Championship. Hovland was solid early in the year, then started an upswing by finishing T2 at the PGA. He then won the Memorial, BMW and Tour Championship (but based on starting strokes; he and Schauffle both shot 261 for 4 rounds at East Lake). So, Rahm had more wins and a better record in majors, while Hovland closed the year playing better and won more money. Make the course easier for the away side by having neutral bodies set the course up? Since 1987 Europe's record away from home is won 4, lost 5. That is better than expected against more naturally talented American teams, home course setup is what makes it such a challenge for the players and exciting for the fans. This is not the issue, 2 years ago Europe got smashed as the team did not transition towards youth (due to a lack of talent coming through at the time) and the remnants of the great 2000's team's went 1 Ryder cup too far. All this against arguably the best US side in recent memory, home course setup just made it appear more obvious. Now both sides look young, talented and deep. 2 years time should be a great tussle.

Europe won because they get along with each other and come together as a team, always. The US are all snippy individuals with noses in the air not looking after each other nor backing each other up when things are going bad. Luke knew this, the Euros know this. That is why Luke stated with the Foursomes to get that team fast-start that the US can't handle, they all would prefer to play Fourballs and Singles and hit their own shots than have to deal with the team aspect of having to make decisions together in Foursomes, and it worked like a charm for Luke. The US won't learn a darned thing from this, its animosity and hatred of LIV will continue to burn in their chests like a bad indigestion until somebody big steps up and says to let the animosity go, let it go, let it go....... FROZEN!!!! LMAO Until that happens, the US will always be like this. Even next time, at Home, it'll be a quagmire, unless the LIV guys are permitted back properly without hassle and the US Ryder Cup rules committee stops being d1cks with hang ups and says it doesn't matter what Tour it is, just pick the best team possible of the nation's best players. Well doesn't that just explain the difference between the US and everyone else. The Europeans continually talk about how this event matters to them because they are playing for more than themselves. And they mean it -- back in the day, when the Euro Tour had the Seve Trophy (GB&I v. Continental Europe), journeymen players who knew they could never make RC teams strove hard to make their Seve Trophy side because they KNEW that there was no feeling like it. That event faded out, but more recently they have established the Hero Cup, which is the same format, and this year featured a lot of players who were hoping to catch the eye of Donald -- who was all over it -- when it came to RC picks. And it worked for some of them.

Check out BDC's driving stats and DJ's putting stats this year and then look up how they and Reed did in Paris in 2018 (when Reed was Masters champ and DJ was world #1) and see if you can still convince yourself they would have made a difference. Agree that Keegan deserved a pick over any one of Jordan, Rickie or Sam. Gooch would have been a real wildcard - 3 LIV wins but MC in 2 majors and T34 in the other in 2023.

@@labkl253 And in both cases the Away team was European. Winning on the road is seriously hard for a team that 1) played nowhere for 5 weeks (a couple of honourable exceptions, and it showed); 2) did not all bother to turn up for a team recce of an unknown course -- while the Euros did, on a course many of them knew and two had won on, and used it as a bonding exercise as much as a recce; 3) are concerned about not being paid because they are so strapped for a million or so that they hate to take yet another week off without getting paid; 4) think they are so much better than their opponents -- despite them having numbers 2, 3, 4 and some others in the top 10 in the world -- who have been competing in strong events, like the European PGA Championship, and doing extremely well while the so-much-better entitled, arrogant Americans loafed around their pools and in their gated communities in Fla. Does everybody remember the great gesture of Jack Nicklaus giving the putt to Tony Jacklin in 1969? That was what the Ryder Cup was all about at that moment, because things changed dramatically over the next decade and it was 1979 when Jack recommended allowing all continental Europeans be allowed to play in the Ryder Cup. Since then, it has been growing into the huge conglomeration of golf we now see. Of course, it's great to see the fans at each venue get so involved, and much of the golf being played is remarkable, but this event has really gotten over the top now with the media making up stories to create 'hatred' within the competition. That is not what the Ryder Cup was supposed to be about. It's supposed to be a great competition involving (supposed to be) gentleman. Too much pomp and circumstance has been put into this competition. The amount of money generated for this event is phenomenal. Can't even imagine how much money is spent by each team. After all is said and done, ONE TEAM WON AND THE OTHER TEAM LOST.

Homa went 5-0 at The President's Cup so I fully expected him to play 5 and be one of the best players on the team. JT has played terrible all year and I fully expected him and Spieth to be pretty useless which they were.....this is why so many people were not happy with the Captain's picks because it was clearly just a buddy system and you had to be in a #BoysClub to get picked and better players like Bry58n, DJ, Reed, Glover and Keegan clearly were not invited into that #BoysClub - winning was not the biggest worry for Zach, including all of his friends for a bro trip to Rome was the main priority.

BDC is 39th out of 48 in fairways on LIV in 2023 and DJ is 31st in putting. How would that have helped the US win? And Reed was Masters champ in 2018 but go check how he did at RC in Paris that year. Keegan should have been picked. Glover maybe. Finau maybe (but 2023 form wasn't great). Cam Young maybe. Not playing for 5 weeks (except Max, JT and Brooks) was crazy.

In 2 years time the Americans will be overwhelming favourites. The home crowd make such a massive difference. They trick the course up to favour the Europeans. You can’t underestimate Eduardo Molinari and his stats. I honestly don’t think any combination of 12 Americans could’ve won against that hostility. Lessons to learn for 2 years time I would say nothing. The lessons to learn for the Americans in 4 years time in Ireland is for the Ryder cup to take place only 2 weeks after East Lake and for all 12 guys to visit the course a month or so beforehand. If any of them say no then they’re off the team. I can’t see the Irish open being played on the same venue.

you go on about home course bias - its complete bollocks. 10 of the European team play on the PGA tour. US players should have played at Wentworth - they are in charge of their own schedules. It's a pathetic excuse. The US team were not prepared and it showed. Fail to prepare, prepare to fail. If Americans are so good at golf they should learn to hit it on the short stuff. It's not that difficult. You also picked players by name and reputation rather than form. You didn't pick Keegan Bradley (gritty), DeChambeau, DJ, Taylor Gooch, Lucas Glover (who won 2 of the closing tournaments -and therefore in great form - but you went with the mates of the players - JT, Spieth, Burns et al. Zach Johnson was a hopeless captain and was already 2 down after the speeches at the opening ceremony. Luke Donald was so much more concise, and calm.

All the others look like non leaders' quiet voices. And no experienced guys as of age. I see Brooks, Scheffer and Spieth (Spieth is out of form this season) more like leaders in playing area only. The timing of the event is a bull shit excuse for team USA. Plenty of opportunity to play competitive golf and prep for the Ryder Cup. I agree there needs to be a shake up of responsibility of course set up and location. We’ll continue to see home teams win every 2 years and it will get old quickly. Love to see an experiment where the tournament is taken to a neutral location (Melbourne Sandbelt I’m looking at you, Royal Melbourne in particular) and course set up is handled by an independent body. No course favouritism, no crowd favouritism, a level playing field. This would be a true test of skills and the best team would win. Won’t happen in this lifetime though 😕
