There's a reason why grounds like goodison are squeezed in amongst the back to back houses, the working man's game , when fans would walk to their ground or jump on a bus or tram for a couple of stops, Everton was one of my favourite away grounds with its character and atmosphere, something that has been lost in the new styles stadiums, and that's the difference , football clubs had grounds, now they are called stadiums but that's progress for you

If you did what anfield did though. You could just buy 1 row each side and still keep close to the houses and keep the same tradition

It's not only the houses it is the direction in which they run. We can't buy a row at a time on on Goodison Road side as we would have to buy many roads.

I'm a Red but think its a great shame Everton are leaving the iconic Goodison was a tremendous place to visit in the 80's when there was still lots of terracing I do think in years to come the likes of Everton, Arsenal and Spurs will still have a pang of regret but football now is all about cash.

however doing this is missing out on the community aspects that Everton will be doing with the stadium, special place for people with dementia, flats for people to live in cheaply, cafes, a park and other medical buildings. i agree it will be sad to see goodison go but that ground is basically going to belong to the people and dedicated to helping people around the area

Thanks very much for making that video. Watching it I fondly remembered my dad taking me to my first game, in 1970 and me taking first one, then another son to their first games and ensuring another generation of my family becoming a part of the Everton family. It is going to be like losing a member of my family when Goodison Park is demolished, but we must look forward to what hopefully, one day, will be a future bringing even more success to our team. God Bless Goodison!

Buying up houses and land around football grounds would be a financial nightmare especially in London, that why Emirates was built on old railway sidings land I believe, and look how Brentford's new ground looks hemmed in a virtually triangular piece of land which has give the stadium character with different shape stands, I look at Southampton's stadium then look at the Dell with its odd shape terracing, the Dell wins every time , and does filbert st, roker park, ayresome park, burden park, boothferry park , old Stamford bridge, Maine road , baseball ground, the list goes on, but you are not allowed to put sentiment infront of progress you get left behind

From an Everton fan in city of Santa Fe, in the state of New Mexico, in the USA: Thank you so much for making this video. You presented a whole new perspective. I apologize in advance for the lack of metric conversions. All I can say is American public schools…. I live on 5 acres of desert at an elevation of 7000+ feet. So it’s remote. Seeing the all houses so close together is strange to me but not that shocking. However I had never heard of nor seen the church in the corner of the grounds. And my friend from, and supporter of Liverpool told me about the short walk across Stanley park. However your picture towards the end of the video of the two grounds really blew my mind. No wonder it was known as the “friendly derby” at one time. I could almost imagine myself making the trek and feeling the excitement. I’m done gushing now. I just wanted to thank you. Cheers

All I’ll say as a City fan is enjoy these last two seasons at Goodison as much as you can. Try and remember your journey, being outside and inside the stadium as much as you can - all the little details. I’d love nothing more to experience another game at Maine Road. The new stadiums have a lot of benefits but they never quite capture that ‘old school’ feeling of going to a football match. Also prepare to put up with a few fans saying ‘I wish we were still at Goodison’ as soon as you lose a couple of games at the new gaff! Ha

Never understood why the new stand behind the goal was so small. Everton could of built a stand with another tier the same size up above. Problem these days there's probably 10 or so clubs who could get 70k+ per game. In 20 years time we could find clubs pulling the new stadiums down and building more like Wembley/Nou Camp etc.

This footage will go on to become a very important historical record. Thank you for taking the time to film this. So many memories over the last forty years are attached to this structure - even some happy ones LOL! I'll be switching to making Haig Avenue my go-to after they move. Money has ruined what I related to in football at this level, and without the sentimentality and nostalgia associated with going to Goodison Park, watching Premier League football will lose its appeal for me. I'll still keep up with what Everton are doing, but I'm going to nail my colours to Southport's mast as far as going on to the matches is concerned. Sad, but this is where I'm at. Thanks again.

I recently visited Goodison after an absence of 45years due to moving away. Without planning it I happened to be sitting g in the same area of the ground I sat in when what was the 'new main stand was opened. Sadly this experience showed all the flaws I what was once a futuristic football experience the roof support posts still got in my line of vision. The provision of only one toilet block in the whole of the 2nd tier. Worryingly the sight of cracking concrete roof supports made me fearful when the foot stomping started. Yes sad but a new stadium is the only way forward. However happy memories of watching 'The Golden Vision' ,Bob latcbford' , Alan Ball and many more.

💙Great vid mate 👍🏼 Another fact: During the 1966 World Cup tournament Goodison Park was used for 5 matches. Making it the second most used venue of the tournament. Obviously Wembley was most used with 9 matches (including all 6 featuring England, the final and the third-place match). The original schedule of the 1966 World Cup meant that if England won their group and then reached the Semi final, the match would be held at Goodison Park. However, the organising committee were allowed to swap the venues, with England playing Portugal at Wembley Stadium. The other Semi-final (West Germany vs USSR) was held at Goodison. It’ll be an emotional day when Everton leave Goodison, it’s such an unrivalled stadium on so many levels in footballs long history.

The if you buy all the houses and make people homeless you get backlash argument seems weird to me. It might actually be more cost effective to not buy the houses on the cheap but buy a replacement house in a nice area for people living there instead. Hence not homeless and fully paid off. Say 30 houses at 100k-200k each would be £6m. They could easily buy up the housing over several seasons and clear the area quite cheaply then build up one stand at a time. No club needs to throw their weight around as good pr gives a lot of goodwill. Give people a fair deal. If the people there are renting not owning and will be homeless find them somewhere else to be and pay a years rent for them. Has to be a better way then compulsory purchase and eviction. In Everton's case the new stadium is already being built and the old ground is sold so my point is moot. But just wanted to make it. Of course I accept that no club is going to try and knock a church down. I'm not religious, I just know it is a bad idea unless the diocees has already made plans to deconsocrate the land and get rid of the church and even that is super unlikely.

if you look at the Bullens Rd side, those houses could have easily been compulsory purchased. They are a mixture of social landlords, slum landlords and about 5 private.( I know this due to my previous job.) The school could also have been demolished and relocated to the old Priory school site 1/2 mile away. After all this the ground could have been turned 90 degrees and rebuilt. Just would have took a bit of willpower to do it and Everton could have built a new stadium with all the local businesses dependant on Everton being able to trade in the future.

Excellent video Mr KCI .. And all the genuine well wishes and heart rending reminiscing from footy fans everywhere.. Have to agree with almost every sentiment & concern expressed up now.... Full stop.. But I have to say this, having been involved in the new stadium process at supporter level, and having enjoyed matches at a fair percentage of modern bowl type stadiums, and hopefully with a genuine sense of modesty, our new stadium will be a degree above the norm .. I won't name the stadiums I consider all of a type, we all know them anyway, Obviously the the spurs one is a bit special in terms of quality and while ours won't be as big or as technically excellent as that, I guarantee it match it for build quality and in terms of appearance ours will be unique. As for the concerns around the goodison atmosphere, believe me, it was high on the list of considerations throughout every stage of planning. There's going to be a wall of sound from that single tier south stand that will make Rorkes drift look like a walk in the park As an attendee of the grand old lady since 1966 I am gonna miss her every bit as much as everyone else but I bet after a few seasons in the place there won't be quite so many looking back.. THANKS for an excellent perspective lad ..

Everton won 1-0 courtesy of I think, a goal by Tony Cottee, but with the game petering out, after about 85 mins I left and had a few pints in the lovely pub right opposite the stand in the narrow street behind. Anyway now for my point, the people behind the bar, obviously Everton through and through asked me if i'd heard what the attendance was and I said that I think it was around 24,000. I was quite taken aback when they seemed very happy with that. Actually I later got told it wasn't quite that high but nevermind. It just shows how, since the start of the PL just how incredible the thirst for football is nowadays with Everton to name but one club now enjoying attendances of almost double the crowd that was in that day, not only that but them having to think about building a new stadium because even this is'nt enough. Of course my team has been able to do this much to my and thousands more Spurs fan's huge satisfaction. Everton's low attendance of course wasn't just a problem for them at the time, most stadiums were suffering low attendances too. Hope you manage to get round to building a magnificent new stadium and you all end up loving it as much as we do ours.

Apparently the attendance at that game was 13,667, and, you were right, Tony Cottee scored the only goal. Won't be long before every ground in the premier league has an attendance of at least 40,000.

Not sure how the problem of the proximity of houses is solved by a new stadium surrounded closely on three sides by water.

Goodison Park is the only PL stadium ever without proper corporate facilities (executive boxes, etc.). Great as both the pitch and the atmosphere are, the stadium itself is massively outdated, and quite simply it’s far more cost effective to build a new one - whilst selling the current one as land for redevelopment - than it is to develop the current one.

Great footage didn't realize how close Everton and Liverpool grounds were to each other I'm a Birmingham City fan can't imagine being that close to Villa we would be smashing each others grounds up and fighting in the park. Seems sad to leave Goodison park with all that history that neighborhood will never be the same again be great if Birmingham could somehow have your old ground ST Andrew's is falling apart

I remember LFC applying for planning permission to build a new stadium in Stanley Park. However, the City Council (perhaps influenced by a certain Joe Anderson?!) didn’t want to be seen to be helping LFC to the detriment of EFC, and it basically insisted the only way planning permission would be granted is if the two clubs shared any such ground. And the thought of that was so unpalatable to both sets of fans the idea never got off the ground, although it would’ve made so much sense in many ways.

The first club to play football in Liverpool wasn't LFC but Everton, AND they played their first games at, wait for it, ... Anfield! Like many stadiums that had to build around obstacles the stadium design was compromised in order to fit those obstacles in. Bramley-Moore Dock offers a cleaner slate without housing or churches vying for space. The seating at Bramley-Moore, about 52,000 as I recall, but there are provisions to increase the seating to 62,000 which would make it even with Tottenham's new stadium. I think the design being done to allow 52,000 seats when first opened and then being able to increase that to 62,000 when time and funding permit is the way stadiums for most teams should be designed. The big teams it makes little sense to design in expansion like this given that they should build as large as the fan base can support right off the bat as that will bring in the most money. Another factor is that modern stadiums include private boxes for the well healed, and the guaranteed money the team gets from these luxury box holders is nothing to sneeze at. And then there's the merch stores and food vendors that have pretty much always been there, but with modern facilities and smartphone apps permitting fans to order food from the app and have it delivered to your seat there are substantial economic opportunities not available with older stadiums. Still, there are aspects of these older stadiums that speak to another age and to those that frequented them in times gone by!

We didn’t have to leave we could have moved the park end stand back towards the Road, then moved the pitch and rebuilt the bullens Rd made it higher and took away the obstructed views maybe ad some boxes, then bring the street end out to the edge of the pitch like it is now and rebuild that and make it similar length and High to the Park End…. Family enclosure, Main Stand, Top balcony, restructure and add a second tear inside the main Stand for more executive boxes! The question was would it be cheaper to rebuild Goodison Park or make a clean brake and build a new stadium? So we didn’t have to move! It was more convenient and possibly cheaper as the club would have lost money due to one end or side being closed during the season or even 2 that it would take to rebuild the stadium! Great video though, love the Old lady and you have captured her from every angle and as long as you save the film People 100 years from now will be looking at it and saying my dad or my grandad used to tell us about it!

We messed up with the Park End stand. You can see how much further back a bigger stand could have been built, which would have enabled the pitch to move up and create a bigger foot print for the Glawdys St. It obviously wouldnt have solved the Bullins Rd, but it would have gave us about 55'000 , more exec suits, and thus put us in in a better financial position the past 25 years.

Great shots there. I'm a Newcastle fan and we're in exactly the same situation as Goodison Park. We have listed buildings directly behind the east stand and they can't be pulled down, people have even suggested that they be moved brick by brick. It would be a real shame if both Goodison and St James's went.

Great video. Love Goodison, had a season ticket when I lived further north, but will see if I can manage a game to say goodbye to the old lady. Got to say, the new ground looks fantastic, and that steep single tier stand will be a magnificent wall of sound, so glad they designed a proper football stadium and not a bowl.

The downside to grounds that have been around for ever, no one thought 80 years ago how much space would be needed to get in the 50-60K+ fans needed these days so houses are all close to the ground, what has the ground where the stadium is now been earmarked for?

Pittodrie Stadium in Aberdeen the home ground of Aberdeen FC and it was where the dug out was invented, Everton travelled North to play Aberdeen FC in a friendly and they saw the dug out at Pittodrie and they decided to install the first dug out in English football at Goodison Park, how sad that both Aberdeen Fc and Everton are contemplating moving grounds.
