Why Every 18 Year Old Should Study Islamic History - Dr Yakoob Ahmed

How do we learn from the wisdom of others in a world intent on a ruthless autonomy. Today, with the Gaza war as our backdrop, we ask Dr Yakoob Ahmed what pieces of advice he would give to his 18-year old self.
Dr Yakoob Ahmed is an academic specialising in late Ottoman history. He is a PhD graduate of the School of Oriental and African Studies and currently teaches Islamic history at Istanbul University. He is in the process of completing his first book on the late Ottoman ulema, to be published next year.

After 9/11 I was teaching Muslim students for the first time. I only knew my Christian religion so I took a course on Islam to help understand my students. Taking that course opened my mind, my heart and made me a better teacher. I think everyone would benefit from a course on comparative religions and economic systems.

A course for teachers just on Islam taught by a Middle East professor. The economics course was a course taken in the 1980s in Boston. I enjoyed both courses very much.@@sideed7356

I was 30 years old when I read a book about my history. It made me very angry that nobody taught me anything. Not my Dutch teachers but not my Moroccan family or mosque. That's our problem, it's not only the West that wants to keep up us down it's our own people too. Everybody is afraid of us becoming uppity. The elders in the mosque call the secret intelligence to spy and criminalise the youth out of fear to lose their positions of power. Learning about your history teaches you that every day you have the choice to do better. Not romanticizing the past and giving yourself an excuse to stand by. There have been tyrants all through history AND people who stood against them.

This just moved me to tears. Tears of hope, seriously. Everything said here, is just so simple and common sense. I write a lot on these topics - I feel seen in these times through Dr. Ahemd's words/wisdom. So thank you. Still waiting on my first Quran:). I have been thinking on this matter, as far as the teaching of Islam. And truly believe the lack of awareness, the distance, the prejudice and violence comes from us, here in the U.S. especially, not having had any exposure/ education to Islam.(or correct history if any) Arabic language studies should be offered, as well, in grade school - when we're first given the option of Spanish, German, French, etc. I think this needs to be insisted upon actually. I know this is coming. It is also never to late to gather our agency and learn online these days. And through traveling - my favorite. Americans are too comfortable and too routine in their lives - which also doesn't help in broadening perspective and understanding. "Status quo is a fallacy" - loved this. I also believe anyone entering politics and leadership of any kind should be versed on Islam. There should be a grasp on any religion, perhaps, that will be helpful in us all working together for a more healthy Global existence. The nice thing is, I do truly believe, the Old (arrogant) politic, is dying and this does not mean the death of wisdom. There is more Wisdom, more beauty, more love coming than any of us can imagine. And as the Dr. said - We must Imagine. FREE PALESTINE!

Do you happen to have a mosque around where you are? You could walk up to one and ask to speak to the imam (spiritual leader) that you would want to have a copy of the Quran. Is this something you think you could do? (I ask so to know if to suggest something else)

Someone complained about the lack of engagement because few comments so here is my story and why I decided to watch this video. Btw I am 22 years old. As a Muslim college student ( who is graduating this May), when I decided to major in history for my undergraduate. I was not proud of it! Although I way always better at history or other social sciences since my childhood, nevertheless my desire was to major in the STEM fields to become a cardiologist ( lol the common desire of Muslim students to become doctors) but after I failed 3/4 of my classes in the first semester. I was confused about my plans and hopes. My self-esteem was really crushed but thankfully a history professor who was teaching American history the following semester noticed I was really good at the comprehension of historical events so she strongly recommended to me to major in history so I followed her advice because I felt I didn’t had much options. Although, I was not too enthusiastic about my major in the beginning but thankfully I am understanding every day how extremely important is History to every aspect of society and major industries.. Understandably since I am educated in a Western college and also sadly, the fact I didn’t prioritize Islamic history contributed to my lack of knowledge about Non-Western histories. But since the genocide in Gaza began I am getting more and more educated in Islamic history but also about the religion. I also feel more connected to Allah and my life has more stability and purpose. We need more innovative historians and we definitely need more Islamic history curriculum today! Inshallah, Palestine will be free soon! Ameen!

Thank you for sharing. I'm glad you are majoring in something you enjoy and are good at. I believe the most learning happens when our interests is peaked. Studying history is very important. I was not interested in it when I was in high school or even uni. However, now that im a parent, I feel it's an obligation to learn and teach it to my children.

One of the most successful sisters in my University got married right out of highschool at 18 married a brother in 3rd year engineering. They lived on campus and she majored in history. She was a uncontested MSA president twice In a row, a Pillar in our community, she was a true leader and to this day 20 years later the brothers go to her for advice and sisters rok ofcourse. She homeschooling her 4 kids and moved all over the world for doing Islamic org work with her husband. She lost interest in her major and had health issues didn't finish beyond a 3year program. He husband and her never bought a house so by some standards rhey could be considered unless full however from many people in the ummahs perspective they Ara highly successful couple. This sister inspired us all. We had adathn on our campus in the 90's we initiated annArabic studies and Islamic studies course with Muslim woman professor and has most of the student union leaders as Muslim those year....the psot 9/11 years. And before you think it was a utopia...our university was a smaller city campus of a certain University...the main campus houses people like Dr Jordon Peterson and others from Toronto. I worked at this university and we had former IDF as union leaders and I lost a Job and also on the side had accomplishments such as women's only swimming that is seperate from Trans women swimming. Both are accomodated and it's didn't happen on it own. We made other larger contributions like the start of University bussing pass for university students was a small tram of Muslim leaders. That gen wa successful the people with we started the RIS conferences, set up lagajrib in Canda and Discover Ua nd Mercy Missiona and MuskimmFest. So much kahir in those years 2003-2007. It didn't seems liek much or enough.looking back it was such an accomplishment that has borne sweet fruit. Just sharing some stories to encourage you. Also there is some independent study based corse work you could do from Oxford University online in history. Might be an interesting way to get a qualification and get some scholarship done on British Muslims. I don't remember all the details off the top of my head, It's from the continuing education page at Oxford. They don't have very stringent entry grades ro do these courses.

We need history majors to become teachers and develop circculum and at least teach modern Muslim History in the west in Muslim private schools at least. I barely see any curriculum there.

Salam Alaykum Be true to yourself brother. And in sha’ Allah when you’re established in your field and have made lots of progress you will not have the least regrets about what you’re doing. Stem subjects are great. But the world does not revolve around them. And yes contrary to what maybe most of the older generation thinks you can be major in a non-Stem field and not live in poverty. I also struggled a lot with this, mainly because of pressure from my parents and imaginary fears. But I learned that truly we have to be true to ourselves. Because when you do what you are meant to do, you’ll be your best at it in sha’ Allah.

I would never say no to ppl that have any kind of beneficial knowledge, specially under the blue print of Islam, not to go out and share and spread that knowledge. Some people can't afford to work outside their homes, or join a uni, or classes at a masjid, there are mothers with babies and children, handicap people, older people, people that dont have much time left after work. the primary powerful institution to build is one's family then neghbourhoods and friends. The ummah needs strong, loving families grounded in faith, sincerity not drowning in greed, jealousy, hatred for one another - the kind of families I am unfortunately seeing around me. I have always loved history since I can remember, but when I became Muslim (18 years ago), my love for history grew even more. Islamic history is so interesting from the seerah of the prophet, prophet stories, the Ottomans, etc. It has helped me understand the religion, understand how it has actually been implemented in different regions and times; it has helped me to understand the many liars and misconceptions about Islam (past Muslim nations). It has even made me more proud to be black due to understanding the many black Islamic kingdoms in African History, black sahabah and black scholars, etc. Lastly, it has made me appreciate and look more into the non-Muslim history of the world due to their history being mixed with ours. I'm 16 years old but i don't think you need to be a certain age to watch this and take heed of these wise reflections. I'm so grateful to have been told half a lifetimes worth of advice and wisdom, It saves me and us as an Ummah time from making mistakes, Insh'Allah we can only excel when we are guided, and through Allah i have found this channel. My 2nd gen Canadian Macedonian univeristy friend mentioned his grandmother came to visit his family in yhe GTA and said ..somethign along the lines of "Well, its so nice to see the Christian girls covering/being modest again here!"And they tried to explain to her they were hijabis..didn't ring a bell for grandma . They tried again explaining they are Muslims. She didn't get it. Then my finds parents said "They're Turks! they're Turks!" She then understood. AH Turks!. This was in the late 90's early 2000's

Anyone would be surprised if knows how much knowledge was embedded inside. From muscle memory to the deepest regions of brain there is so much information stored! Indeed we need to decenter ourselves from the Greek, Roman and their neo version of civilization and discover what our ancestors acquired and left for us. Don't center on Islamic civilization either. Take whatever is good is found from whatever civilization or non civilization there are. Also dig into yourselves for the information and knowledge that your ancestors passed down to each one of you. The world would change like a miracle!

As a young person living in the west who wants to centre their education on Islam, I was wondering where you would advise pursuing education in topics like Islamic history, art, etc.? Are there any good institutions/scholars in the West for this or would you recommend moving to a Muslim country to acquire this knowledge?

the problem for me is, how do I learn islamic history without bias from western sources? do i have to learn arabic to learn true islamic history from islamic sources, i really hope i can start

Similar concern for me! I can speak my native language ( Somali) but I don’t know how to write it or read it + I don’t know Arabic at all. I began to study Arabic using Duolingo but that is not going well so far. Because of my situation it means that I will be able to understand and really appreciate Islamic history and Also the religion of Islam itself through the English language, but nevertheless since the Quran is the center of the Islamic civilization and also the fact the Quranic translations always fall short no matter how near-perfect they are means, we probably don’t get the real deal or the deep understanding of the Quran and the Islamic civilization we desire. Learning Classical Arabic or the Modern Standard Arabic will open so many doors but I don’t know where to start. Also, to be honest I personally don’t have completely my life in order ( personal problems) so even when I am given a perfect advice, I always struggle to implement it consistently. Life is so complicated! lol!

Sometimes you get people following these popular Muslim influencers ( who are great) but if the individual isn't being encouraged to read the Qur'an...or even submitting to their prayers then what good is that..... today some people have this false sense of security of just scrolling their phones wasting time on social media etc and not connecting with the Divine......it's all all about getting likes etc.. I agree there must be a close relationship with the Qur'an
