My 3rd grade class was basically forced to buy $15 recorders from the school. I never got one, I refused. So, I got in school suspension for one week, and then I got every other week in the detention room for the year because I was an easy target for the teachers, everyone just assumed I was the most dishonorable student ever. And then I cussed out the whole office staff and principle at the end of the year.

Yeah, when an anime or a movie or a video game starts playing something that sounds classical, 9/10 times they're using something classical instead of writing their own as writing for an entire orchestra takes a lot of time. A lot of classical music is out of copyright and well-recognized by even people who don't practise an instrument. E.g. Verdi's Dies Irae (or any form of Dies Irae) is super popular, Mozart's Lacrimosa too, or Beethoven's 5th or 9th or Moonlight Sonata, they're in movies and animes and games because they convey certain feelings and do it well. On a rare occasion anime, movies or games compose their own classical music (e.g. Lilium from Elfen Lied, One-Winged Angel or Dancing Mad from FFVII and FFVI, Lux Aeterna in Requiem for a Dream, games seem to do it most), but a lot of the time they can find some old work that is out of copyright that they can use. IMHO it's great as it helps those compositions stay alive, but it'd be nice if people knew the origins instead of calling it "soundtrack music". Google is your friend here 🙂

Here in Mexico, at least in my school, we were forced to play the same two bars on repeat of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" and "Ode to Joy". And the teacher we had never taught us how to read sheet music or how to play correctly. The school later changed to the melodica but kept the same teacher. Everybody hated the music lessons, and now that I watch musicians like Lucie Horsch play the recorder at the orchestra I feel like we were robbed.

This is exactly how I learned piano... sorta. I started in 3rd grade with these really basic electric keyboards with colored dots denoting what key they were, but I wasn't really interested, because for one, it was dumb to me, for two, i didnt even know what Do was (we started at like Mi and Fa and So and stuff), and for three, I was either a very awesome child or I tore the room apart. Fast forward to 6th grade, and I see this music teacher with a piano and I'm interested and ask what the highest and lowest notes were, but he taught guitar, which I hated. 7th grade, music teacher teaches mandated piano, and I loved it. My dad also had a piano at home, so I started to self-teach myself piano, and by the time the class ended, I had very basic knowledge on how to read sheet music, but nothing else really, so I just taught myself how to play by ear and by watching MIDI videos (which I'm decent at now). This technique taught me an eiffel 65 song, which was a long-standing favorite song of mine, but I couldn't learn much else, and I refused to take tutoring lessons until a couple of years ago. 30 minutes, once a week, I would be taught how to read more and more complex sheet music until it came to the point where I read and played some highly played pieces of Beethoven (für elise, first and second moonlight sonatas). Now I can read it just fine, but I'm not at a point where I can glance at it and say, "Yup, that's how it sounds." I can only say, "Yup, that's the chord I'm playing in." I still play significantly by memory. I've taught myself Nocturne in E Flat and the Turkish March so far, and I'm wanting to learn Prelude in C Minor by Rachmaninov.

At my school you have to learn the recorder in 5th grade, and you get like belts. White to black belt. And you put it on your recorder, and it’s like little strings, for different songs, and there are belts to make it more fun. :)

I was in 4 th grade and our music teacher taught the class. I think there were 3 kids that year then went on to join the band . I joined in 5th grade learning to play the clarinet . It was made of metal , all in one piece. My parents rented it for $15.00 a month. Unfortunately , I had been practicing and briefly got up off the couch. When I went to sit down , I accidentally forgot it was there and I sat on it !!!😦and bent it out of shape !!! Fortunately , the person at the music shop was able to fix it . When I got in junior high school 7th grade, my parents then bought me the wooden clarinet. Being in band was really nice all the way until I graduated
