I'll do a quick calculation: Sinology and 6 hard drives cost around $ 1500. One month of Apple Cloud costs $ 10. At the price of Sinology I would have more than 10 years of Apple cloud. If anything happens to the Sinology hardware it would be my problem. And statistically in ten years something will definitely go wrong. If anything happens to Apple's servers it's an Apple problem that would be solved without me even realizing it. I believe that a solution like Sinology (or any other) is suitable only for those who develop huge volumes of work, in the order of tens or hundreds of terabytes, not for ordinary people for whom 2 terabytes are more than enough.

One thing to consider, if you stick 6 hard drives in to one of these things you will have 24TB of storage (20TB usable if you use SHR 1). iCloud on the other hand gives you 2TB. So if you do a direct comparison of storage you need to consider the capacity. If you don't have more than 2TB to store then cloud is way cheaper.

Hate this kind of hard sell! One important factor not addressed is if your NAS burns down with your home or office you are stuffed! At least offline cloud services like Apples iCloud provide security against this with multiple redundancies. Did not hear this in the ad!

Something I’m yet to address with my own Synology is to switch from backup to AWS glacier to another family member with a Synology. Sure still not as redundant as say iCloud, but faster for large backups and not open to lockout from service should password or some disagreement with the company end up being cut off.

This NAS is 816.00 dollars from Office Max. Include a modest amount of hard drives and that puts you at an equivalent of 10 years of ICloud storage at 2 TBs. 120 a year for 2 TBs really isn’t that bad. I’m sure it makes a great NAS, but the pitch that it makes a good IPhone backup system? Not at all.

I actually own an older Synology NAS and have been very happy with it. However, I don’t think it eliminates the need for cloud or offsite backup. What happens if, G_d forbid, something happens to your home and both your computer and NAS are no longer available? Experts say you need at least three copies of valuable data and one must be off-site.

I have a Synology for my local backups. It's great. But it's major overkill for backing up a phone and you're overlooking that you have to be pretty competent with computers, storage and technology in order to implement it. It's also no substitute for cloud-based backups anyway, so if it's just for a phone it's a waste.

These things are $1000. The one he’s showing is $1600. The lowest I’ve seen is $600. The 2tb iCloud plan is $10/mo. That means even at the very lowest synology would take 5 years to pay for itself and is more likely only to pay for itself after 10+ years. And with the way tech advances who even knows if this would be 1. Safe or 2. Effective in that kind of time frame. Unless this product gets under the $500 mark and preferably under the $400 mark it is useless for the average consumer. Maybe good for business, but the regular Joe Schmo? Fogittabout it

You are missing a vital point. Having all your data backed up on a cloud ties you down to rely on someone else's server. Making yourself susceptible to security risks because its out of your hands. A personal NAS gives you all the control, you can make make multiple copies of all your data and even keep the really important stuff offline, if you wanted. Just because it's easy and cheap doesn't always mean its the best solution.

@@cqjohns I get that, but having all your data on your own hard drive has downsides too. Hard drives crash all the time and hard drives for NAS systems are expensive to replace adding even more to the cost, and let’s face it, these hard drives aren’t going to last 10 years. It’s just a really expensive option for the average person compared to cloud offerings. I cannot see the benefits for an average person, maybe a company that needs to have several people accessing data on the same drive, but an average person? No way.

I will always advise all my friends and fam to have some type of physical form of data, it's like buying insurance, expensive, but could save your ass in the future. I have an older 5 bay model. They are great as long as your not sorting terabytes of files on them. As storage for an already sorted library of files, it’s great. Mac compatibility of its tools however is low. They have not updated their apps to work with m1 macs. So the functionality is lower as a result. It also has faster networking speed on a pc. Have not been able to get that speed on a mac yet. I suggest using two bays for ssd storage of all your small files. Those are slow to access on spinning disks. Huge files like movie files or projects can go on spinning drives.

I'm all for the convenience and security that comes with having a system like this but with all the references to "cheaper than cloud services" and "free backup", the discussion feels incomplete without talking about the cost of the Synology device and the associated drives. How does that cost compare annually when amortized over time compared to iCould, Google Drive and others?

Well, if an Apple user has products such as Macbook Pro, iMac and iPhone, I always recommend the only one, the QNAP brand which offers NAS models with Thunderbolt 3 support. That performance is bestial, and their ZFS is in the final the icing on the cake 😉

I have a Drobo 5C (connected vis USB 3.0 to my PC) and get 75-80 MBs transfer when storing data (the optimized version with 10 Gbs card etc.). Would be great to get better than that.

Even with all of your positive talk about Synology I’m not finding a single use case where anyone would want it If you’re a consumer and have an iPhone and MacBook, however simple Synology is, it’s always simpler to just pay a couple of dollars a month for iCloud rather than pay a huge upfront cost for hardware. And if you’re a business that needs that much storage (eg. Video production) you probably already have IT knowledge on how to create a custom server

@@TimoWolf200 First if all, please outline a few consumer use cases for a NAS as I can't think of any in which it would be the better option compared to cloud storage such as Google Drive or iCloud. Also, for smaller and non-tech-focused businesses I do agree Synology would be a good option. However, for larger or more tech-focused businesses, you will probably already have the personnel on hand that know how to create a custom NAS (or could easily learn) so you could do it without a middleman such as Synology. It's like building a PC will almost always be cheaper built yourself rather than from an OEM with the same components

I would suggest that the use case scenario is already having a NAS that you use as a Plex server. In this case, you use the NAS for backup purposes or cloud storage replacement as well. You would have the NAS already so why not save the monthly iCloud fee, which doesn’t pay for the NAS but effectively reduces the cost of the NAS by a bit.

I bought one of these in 2007 or so. It’s a server with a bunch of capabilities that I don’t think most consumers would want to use. There is maintenance overhead that I doubt most folks would want to deal with. But if you like UNIX and being a sys admin, it’s great. I bet there are a l of people out there who would be happy to give one away for free. I would have loved having one in high school. BTW, I think it a good idea to assume everything you backup to the commercial clouds will be stolen. At a minimum the government will have access to it and probably many criminals and foreign countries. That’s just common sense. Synology is more secure in that regard, but has other problems/costs.

We have a Synology at home from around that same era. We use it to run our video cameras and as a media server. Not Plex, just file sharing. I agree, there's not much to attract people from a consumer standpoint. But if you are into tech this thing is quite cool. You can run game servers, you can have an extra Linux computer in the house, and you can do the things I mentioned earlier. Either way, I think backing up to iCloud or Google Drive is much easier and hassle-free. At our house we all back up to Google Drive and it's really cheap. Obviously we don't back up passwords, bank details, or sensitive photos. But it helps to have something off-site. Regarding the security cameras, we also pay TP-Link for cloud storage for the footage. If something were ever to go wrong, like someone setting the house on fire. We would still have the footage.

So I do have a synology - and as much as I do like it - it seems I can not make a full back up of my iPhone/iPad to then synology drive - only options are to iCloud or to the computer . Some research did dig up you can copy the backup files from computer to the NAS - but you can’t do it direct - So not quite as easy as he makes it sound. So I still had to buy some iCloud storage.

dont forget to tell, that the first thing, synology tells you after setting up a synology server is to back it up e.g. to clouds, which all cost money and that a failure of a synology server, which happened to me twice in 9 years, leads to more servers to back them up without a cloud which costs even more money for additional servers. and tell that raid 5 is not recommended if you want to keep your data safe, because if another drive fails within the 24 hours it takes to repair a volume, everything is gone. so one synology definetely leads to at least another one. period.

There is a saying redundancy is not same as backup. Backup is different. You need to physically separate the backup copy from the main source in case of a disaster situation. Synology is good for redundancy… depending on the RAID type one would achieve the right type of redundancy. It comes with costs those NAS drives are not cheap. Unless one have a plan to create a home based content server like personal Netflix, there is no point of using NAS to just for backup

I pay for iCloud but it t cannot compare to a NAS. iCloud tops out at 2TB and costs $120/yr. That's only enough for my 4yr old MacBook Pro. But I have 3 iPhones 3 iPads, two more Macs a couple PCs. My Synology has plenty of redundant space plus a ton of other features such as Plex.

The cost for Synology + Hard drives far exceeds over 10 years paying for iCloud, Drop Box, etc) Synology has its use case no doubt and I am a fan, but this is not the correct comparison. It falls flat. I have 4 Macs, 4 iPads, 2 active phones all backing up to the same iCloud (different family accounts too - pics, contacts, files) and after 5 years paying for the full size i still have 1.1 TB available space … AND its backed up. Find a different reason to advertise how awesome you are @Synology & tell us about that. I think someone with a Plex server (I don’t have one) is a good argument. Any video editors with large files to store also make good arguments.

This argument is nonsense. You cannot compare the setup in this video with a 2 TB iCloud plan. When you buy a Synology DS220j with 2 2TB NAS Hard Drives ist will costs about 550€. If you compare this to a 2TB iCloud plan for 9,99€ it will be only about 4 years. This is a big difference! And don’t forget you have many more features and possibilities with a Synology NAS.

As some are pointing out depends on your needs. I’ve found it useful as a web server, media server as well as backup and have been playing with other features. As many have pointed out, just to backup your phone/replace iCloud it is not worth it.

@@ThurstanHethorn agreed completely. They’re are cheaper alternatives for that. However, I do photography part time and a tiny bit of video. I would love an on-site cloud storage option. I just haven’t had the time or money to put into one. I didn’t realize the synology devices could do quite so much.

@@jonathanpollock8970 they are basically full computers except headless (no monitor or keyboard) so quite capable, fairly good App Store. Synology would be fairly good for photo work, but perhaps not the best choice for video. The lower end only have 1gbit ethernet, maybe 2gbit with two cables and some messing around. Then you start hitting either cpu or drive speed limits. The home / small business aimed ones don’t strike me to be made for throughput speed. You may be able to get some redundancy goodness on you computer or laptop by running a simple mirrored raid, basically get two hdd/ssd in duplicate. If you don’t need the always on accessible around the world features then you can get two drive usb caddies again mirrored for redundancy. With up to 20Tb per drive you don’t need many drives to get a good deal of storage. You can always setup an old computer to be you Nas if you have a few hours and a bit of technical or guide following ability.

Most of my online backups take place overnight. I hadn’t thought about running a NAS through another computer. I’ll definitely look into that.

@@jonathanpollock8970 there is actually a version of Synology software to run on other hardware. I think it’s called “open NAS” and can run on some general intel hardware. There are other providers of software. May not have to go that far, just chuck in another drive and mirror it is a good start.

Synology is brilliant for Apple products in particular, but great for pretty much users of any OS. My only gripe is they stupidly removed the duplicate photos feature from Synology Photos in DSM & when it was there in Moments in DSM 6. Dumb as !!!

Just wanna mention, that even if your drives only had en unrecoverable read error rate of 10^15, (but WD Reds usually have 10^14) the chance you rebuild from a single drive failure successfully is only 85%. For these drives it would be 20%! So I would never use those drives in RAID 5! If you don't need highspeed, (which you don't for a backup server) go with 2*12TB+ in RAID 1, which is usually cheaper as well. RAID 10 is also a great option, as it is fast and can rebuild without errors, if no drive fails. You mentioned in the video that it has worked in the past, which seems unlikely to me, so there might be something I am not getting here and if somebody has an info, please share it with me.

Misleading ad. Yes Synology are great, I use one, but this did not go into any detail as to why it is useful for an iPhone. I was hoping to see at least one method it is used for backup. The best I can think of for full backup is to backup to a Mac should you have one then use the time machine. Photo backup wasn’t as seamless last time I tried.

Synology is great but you really didn't explain why an iPhone user needs a Synology. I still can't backup directly from my phone to it, I don't believe. I thought you were goign to share a way this could be done. Right now I have to backup my phone to my computer --- which then gets backed up via Time Machine.

Imo, the $2.99 200gb plan is 100% worth it. People don’t understand local storage, is well local. Fire, flooding all your info is gone. Power outage? It’s temporarily gone. Imo a cloud as big as apple is invaluable. Home nas only really make sense if you hoard data. Even 1tb for $9. That’s $120 a year. To run a similar nas set up you’d need 2, 2bay nas (one for a separate location), 4 1tb hdd, an internet connection with fast upload, electricity. That’s like $1000 with the hdd swap. 10 years of iCloud

So the setup shown would run approx. 1200 CAD for the system, and 700x6 CAD for the storage at 4TB drives. 5400/ish CAD for total setup. I could pay 12/monthly for 200GB rotating storage in the cloud for 40 years at that rate…. While taking into account storage will only be a fraction of that price down the road this looks like a bad deal… Not to mention an easier to hack system and I’m on my own to replace hardware when it fails. May be right for a small business, but not for an at home user.

Okay, I have a Synology - it's great. All my computers backup to it automatically. It's in Raid 5 and every month I back it up separately to hard drives in a media fire safe. It's got thousands of videos on it that I watch with plex from all of our TVs. It hosts my website and websites for my friends. My entire family has links to the pictures folders which automatically tag all the photos and they add their own photos to those folders whenever they have any. So I'm sold - but this video is useless.

Why not backup photos and videos freely through google photos and save contacs on SIM? App data of social medias are also automatically backed up after logging in and files can be easily stored in mac. Why tf would I even need SYNOLOGY or whatever???

Just back up everything on your phone to your mac. I litlerly have one hdd lieing around that has my macs back up and all my dozens of phones back up in one. THe hdd has a clone of my mac on it so i can just unscrew the back and stick it in and Im away laughing

The video makes it sound like once you pay the $1600 for the unit then it's zero cost. But 1, there's the added electricity cost to run it day in and day out. 2, mechanical hard drives typically have a life span of 5 years. They might last way longer, or way shorter. So you should also be prepared to replace at least one hard drive per year. 3, the manufacturer warranty is only 3 years, so any repair costs after that are the consumers responsibility. 4, in the amount of time it would take for this unit to "pay for itself" it will be obsolete. Finally 5, there's the added risk of theft, fire, or natural disaster and all your data is instantly gone. Maybe I can see this as a good option for someone who needs to back up dozens of TBs, but for the vast majority of people a monthly subscription for a cloud service will still be more convenient, more secure, and cheaper.

iCloud for a lifetime is probably less expensive as a NAS with drives. And then there’s the problem of the NAS failing, so you need two of them.
