Why Everyone Is Mad at Ledger

Ledger has previously asserted that the seed cannot be exported from the secure element. However, they have now reversed their stance, stating that it is possible and has always been so with a firmware update. This contradicts their original claim. Since they've provided conflicting information on one issue, it calls into question their overall credibility. If faced with a governmental request for a backdoor into a specific user's data, they may not be entirely forthcoming, based on this precedent.

it's absolutely not the same threat model and anyone saying so(surprisingly even some core devs) are missing the forest for the trees. Sure you were trusting ledger before and you're trusting ledger now. But is ledger the same as before after they've pushed this update? No they're not. The ledger you trusted wrote in their documentation that their operating system did not expose the private key in any manner at all through any interface

The issue here is that Ledger have the capability to retrieve your keys. Forget about "your permission" - look at what Canada did to the Freedom Convoy.

Already got a tangem. Cant trust ledger anymore. Even if its a 99? Safe chance. I get the idea.. but horrible decision to implement it with an existimg product, ei. Nano x

I think it comes down to Ledger becoming open source. If they choose not to, their reputation will be somewhat in question. Let's see if they step up to the plate.

Just to point it out: Being open source is pointless if you buy pre-assembled and loaded hardware because there is no guarantee the same firmware installed is the one installed on the device
