And didn't really step away from photography, but when my film cameras gave up the ghost (after decades of use), I switched to digital point and shoots, waiting for digital to first mature, and then for the prices to comes down on mature products (full-frame, 40 plus megapixels is what I consider "mature"). Just over a year ago I pulled the trigger on a Sony a7RII, and since then have been selling old gear to finance new. I'm looking forward to retirement, and am planning to possibly supplement my retirement with photography. Took the day out of work and went to a local wildlife refuge. When I came back to the parking lot, I put my pack in the storage area of my SUV, and went to the men's room. When I came out, $6600 worth of gear was gone. Someone, in broad daylight with witnesses around, broke out a window on my car, and swiped my pack, and drove off. Insurance will make up some of the loss, but I won't be able to make up the balance. I guess I'll have to scale back on my flexibility (mainly fewer lenses, but a replacement camera is going to be a killer, because I got a close-out price on my Sony) as I re-equip myself.

Sorry that happened, Dave. We sadly live in a world full of weakness and cowardice.

@@JohnMagnoski Thank you for your thoughts. I would not have my job now but for a religious exemption (from a vaccine mandate in my state), so I'm not in the dire straits you were in! Uplifting to see that you persevered and overcame. And, BTW, welcome to the rollover club! (I rolled over back in 1985.)

@@davegrenier1160 Glad you were able to get an exemption. Ridiculous how govt and others think they can force people to take an experimental drug… ugh, don’t get me started. 😉 I can persevere and overcome only by the Grace of God. As for the rollover club… Definitely wish I wasn’t part of but I guess it beats other things. God Bless.

John, I just stumbled on this video and it really hit me. I have gone through something similar. I didn't loose my job/house, but I stepped away from photography for a period of time. And I found out how much I missed it especially printing. Thank you for sharing your personal story. I also love that video on black and white for Affinity Photo. And as other posters said, love the personal content...very engaging.

Hello John, I to seam to have "lost my way" At 63 I got engaged , sold my home of 25 years (WITH AVERY NICE STUDIO FOR PRINTING) and all my "stuff" I moved into her house, I had one huge room to use from layout table to worktables. I now have a small room to use, all my framed prints needed to be "approved" for hanging, after seeing your video ..your so right I need to print for me, even if they never make the walls can tuck them in my storage binder and view them any time I want to. AND who knows maybe , just maybe ,some will make the "approved" wall once again.

Amen to all that,John. We definitely should print our work.NNothing beats a beautiful framed print on the wall as opposed to the photograph sitting on your HD or phone.

You are 100% correct, John. The print is the gold standard of an image, not the screen. Well done.

Hi John a very emotional video and I can sympathize so well. Yes, I too have been through a financial crisis, lost my family and also my photography for a long time. I have returned to life and also to photography, through which I have strength for life. Print the photos themselves, that is really the pinnacle of photography. I love to watch your videos. All the best for the future.

Kudo's to you John. Your vid was not at all what I expected BUT your story certainly touched a nerve with me and I truly appreciated your message. Thank you for that. Another pleasant plus, for me, was to find that we both are P900 users (an absolutely wonderful printer). Other than that, none of our gear or software matches, which proves the old adage that it is the individual not the machine that brings the art to the page. As an enthusiastic amateur I love the whole photographic process. Your articulation of the print value is absolutely first class. Thank you from Canada...

Thanks Jack! Well said. Our gear and software of choice are simply tools to help us create. And there’s just nothing like holding a print. Thanks again! 👍

@@JohnMagnoski John, colour me embarrassed as on a closer look at your equip I realized you were shooting the X100v not the GFX100s. No idea how I interpreted your list as such. Anyway, I am a Fuji shooter as well and am in love with my X-T3. That said, I continually have a problem using the jPeg format as I had transitioned from Nikon and, of course, RAW, So I predominantly do my post work with RAF files (bad habits?). The thought struck me that there is a huge Fuji community out there needing another Guru, hint, hint. I know you are using Capture One (I am a hard fast Lr user) but I would like to encourage you to produce yet another vid on your post processing workflow, with jPeg, from memory card through to final print output. I know you currently have a small following but with perseverance I am sure the numbers will grow as your name and expertise get out there.

@@jackcopland8556 No need to be embarrassed! I actually do shoot with the GFX100s (and the 50s, and the X-T2, X-T4, X100 series, etc.). ; ) The Fuji jpgs are great when you're looking to only work with SOOC files (think photojournalism / street) with very minimal post production. But for the photographic artist who wants total control, working with raw files is the best way to go. I shoot in RAF + JPG on all my shoots (commercial & personal), using the jpg for reference and tuning the .raf to my liking. Although I do have a handful of images I captured in jpg that I preferred over working the raw file. I'm more than happy to do a video where I am working only in jpg. In fact, I touch on working in jpgs a little bit on a couple of my tutorials. Not sure if I could be a guru, but I am happy to help photographers wherever, whenever, and however I can.
