I've sold on eBay for 15 years, and have sold on WN for a year. It's definitely not for every seller. I don't think it's even for MOST sellers. We all have the exact same chance on eBay to sell, because as long as your pictures, item specifics, and title are on point, we're all equal. Not on WN. Those of us with no social media following (and no desire to have one), don't start from the same place as those who bring their own buyers with them. Plus, most sellers that would happen to get a following organically on WN, don't have access to bins to keep enough dirt cheap inventory in stock. It's basically resellers buying from resellers, and profits are slim for most.

I couldn't agree more. Selling on Whatnot without a large social following is not worthwhile. I don't have a You Tube channel and not many Instagram followers. As with any auction, the more bidders, the higher the selling price. Trying to sell my collectibles at below market value to a dozen or so potential buyers does not work for me. Sticking with eBay for now.

I was approved almost immediately, too!My first show is in the morning. I haven't seen anyone mention this yet, but besides all of the success everyone is having on WHATNOT, I'm hoping it will also start spilling over to those of us that sell on eBay too. There's finally some legit, hardcore competition for them. I'd be concentrating really hard on rewriting my seller protection program if I were them, or they aren't going to have any sellers left to protect. Broskiiiiiies!!!! I just started whatnot. Done 2 shows already. 1st show was boys clothes. 2nd show was Garbage Pail Kids cards and that was a 7.5 hour show but wa a blast.. For kiddos clothes, It went ok. Didn't hit huge traffic. Had maybe 13 peeps in my room at the max. I made the mistake of listing for $1 all our items. So I only had one bidder but she really made my night and she also is new to selling on whatnot. So we're friends now and I'm always supporting her shows back. Much love in this community. So awesome!

I don't have a huge following but it did take me a while to get accepted. I applied twice. Some categories are oversaturated so if you pick an up and coming category it might help your chances. Also they like to see how much inventory you have.

I have the volume and the price point. Did 3 auctions. Auction 1 I started everything at $1. Had 60 items to sell. What did sell mostly went for $1. But half went with no sale. Sale 2 I started at $2. Had complaints it wasn’t $1. Made $13 on that sale. Sale 3. $3 starts. 4 sales out of 40 items. Buyers just aren’t there in my category yet. I may re-evaluate in 6 months to see if it’s changed. *note: I do not have a social media following.

Been on WhatNot for 6 or so months , have 1k followers and have only sold about 250 items … tonight was more than likely my last show , it’s incredibly hit or miss on there , pretty much 0 return buyers , and the ones I do get realize they can get the same books from the much larger channels for basically retail price because they essentially make and distribute the comics themselves so are able to sell shit at retail , the only people who come in my shows are people looking for giveaways and when they don’t see one they dip out , I don’t have the “KZbin / streamers personality” I can’t sit there and talk to myself for 6 hours because well that’s usually how it goes , pretty much 0 interaction from anyone . And unfortunately I don’t have the “salesman attitude” either , I’m not gonna sit there an put on a clown costume and do a little song and dance for people like these other streamers do . WhatNot caters to the large channels , immediately boosting them to the top when searching shows , and putting us little guys waaaaaay at the bottom , if ur lucky Ull make a couple bucks a show , which immediately gets cut in half by whatnots ridiculous fees .

There are a few dishonest Whatnot sellers and some who may be honest but sell so much they short items in your orders. This has happened to me by 3 different sellers. If you buy items on Whatnot be sure and write down what you are supposed to get. Many sellers do not properly describe what they sell and simply write general descriptions like "lincon cent#1, Lincoln cent#2, etc. In one case I bought a 1922D Lincoln cent for less than $10, and it was somehow conveniently MISSING! Same with a 1922 peace dollar I bought from another seller for $22, also MISSING. Then I had an entire shipment missing from a seller who just throws coins in an envelope with no packing list. Buyers have little recourse when we complain about missing items. The sellers who were paid by you can simply block you for complaining and you have to hope Whatnot will step in. So far Whatnot has been dragging their feet after I have spent about $5000.00 on that platform.

Very Interesting insights. I am NOT a fan of Whatnot at all. I just don't know why I would want to use it over ebay? Whatnot has terrible customer service and lots of scammers that aren't shipping as expected in sports cards. Whatnot is hated in some communities. I guess it is different for what you sell, but won't ebay live be better?

I have had great experiences with customer service and haven’t had many problems with sellers personally. I think it is a major opportunity right now for sellers. eBay live has the potential to be HUGE…but I don’t think it will stop whatnot and may not make it at all.

Whatnot is definitely worth it. Originally I was selling a little bit of everything. Started off with Funko Pop's. Did plush, hats, action figures. Took a break for a bit. Now I've basically niched down to focus one category. I'm currently doing Yu-Gi-Oh cards. I run them Sunday nights late cause later is better given time zones and such. I do plan on eventually getting back to Funko pops and action figures. I set a price goal for myself so I don't just end my stream when there's no one buying. Definitely have days/times dedicated to each category. And be consistent.

We were approved to sell live on Whatnot…. They turned my live auction button on in less than 24 hours and they didn’t even make me do the onboarding process…. I am still getting everything ready now bc I thought it took a couple weeks to get approved and do the onboarding…. My plan is to start on the first of 2024…. @@americanarbitrage I agree… I was invited to join a raid train with some established sellers on the app… it starts in the morning of December 29th and each seller gets 30 minutes to sell their stuff then they raid the next seller on the raid train list and it lasts all day… I think it would be a good way to get followers and get my first quick show under my belt then build from there… thanks for your input and response 🙏🙏🙏

Roughly 18-22% all said and done…honestly I’d pay more…when I ran an auction house I charged 30%. The interface and marketing has massive value, I’ve never been one to worry about fees.

If you dont have a good personality and good content you wont sell on whatnot. I see people on for 2 hours and there stream is so boring and unwatchable and they make people lose interest almost instantly and to no surprise they dont have 1 sale for that whole time they streamed. Also dont be thinking youre selling for prices you see on ebay thats not why people go on whatnot when they could just buy on ebay for cheaper

It does help if you’re known….no doubt. There are people who really only have a following on Whatnot, it is possible…without the following. I would encourage people to work on both…whatnot and classical social media. I had zero followers 4 years ago…it can be built.
