My first thought with a good dark Winnie the Pooh story would be to have incredibly serious events surrounding Pooh, but have Pooh remain his same innocent self. The core of Pooh's character is that he is completely innocent, so having that kind of person in a world that is awful and having him trying to make the world better just by being himself would be an interesting spin. It can be simultaneously dark and optimistic.

@@mojpiesto Yeah that's part of where I got the idea from, but also his is different because its not a horror thing, it's just placing Pooh in various situations and having him be innocent and making everything better because of it.

Winnie the Pooh could work so well in dark stories that deal with: - Mental Health Issues - Loss of a loved one - The conflict of an imaginative mind and the outside world. It is such a shame that we only got THIS.

A story where one of Winnie’s friends die or like, move away to a different forest or something. Winnie becomes depressed. Winnie connects with the like, donkey lookin eeyore guy. (Pretty sure eeyore character trait is that he’s depressed idk) Eeyore connects with Winnie, and Winnie understands how eeyore feels. Eeyore helps Winnie to get out of the depression, and Winnie, now having understood depression, helps eeyore get out of his own depression. They live happily, having grown emotionally.

@@onemariobro The game was originally just supposed to be a 1 week game jam in 2022, but they just kept on working on it because they liked the game. They didn't just all meet up one day and decide to have their next big game be a Winnie horror game just because they could.

Hey there! We're making Winnie's Hole, and I agree with your sentiment that childhood content can be turned dark tastefully, and that's what we're trying to do. This isn't a Blood and Honey equivalent, it's not a cheap slasher. Winnie is not evil in our game, he's infected. You play the virus, so 'evilness' is directed by the player. We didn't really know what kind of reception the trailer would get but since it blew up we've been increasing the scope of the game. We want to execute this well and give it sufficient time to be great. If you've seen our last title, Ring of Pain, it's another example of how we aim to innovate and give players an experience they haven't had before. Winnie's Hole is also an attempt at a new genre-hybrid that's more story driven than the average roguelite. It's only loosely referential to the original content, more like a parallel world built around the personality of Winnie. Being a known character means we can leap straight to the situational dark comedy of a virus trying to survive and Winnie... well, not quite even realising he's infected at first. There's no way we can compete with a game like Lies of P, we're a tiny team, but I hope you give it a chance when we release it. Thanks for including the caveat that the game isn't out yet.

Another great example of making a children's story into dark and horrific without making it cringe is AmericanMcGee's Alice, and its direct followup Alice:Madness Returns in 2011. Both of those games used the story and base concept of Alice in Wonderland with beautyful efficiency to touch onto serious subject like childhood trauma, survivor's guilt, mental illnesses and the second game even ventured into some extremely uncomfortable territories, like abusive adults using high status and titles to hide their deviant, horrible personalities. Also they somehow managed to do this without making everything into dark and edgy. Wonderland in the game still feels like a fairytale world of a child's imagination. It's still colorful and beautyful in places, but still unsettling and feels extremely wrong, corrupted and always threatening. The game literally feels like living though a long nightmare, which fits the purpose of the creators perfectly. While Alice:Madness Returns is not a perfect game ( rushed development results in literally all but one of the bossfights getting cut, and since enemies don't scale with your weapon level the endgame is basically a cakewalk), I can only recommend it to everyone for the atmosphere, artistic integrity and story. It's one of EA's best titles (yes, as weird as it sounds it is from EA) and always under 10$ on Origin.

The devs of Winnie's Hole actually have another rougelike that's a geniune MASTERPIECE. It's called ring of pain. I honestly believe that Winnie's hole will be an amazing game. (I also find it very weird that you are judging a game that hasn't come out yet.)

I think you should check out Hundred Acre Wood, a cosmic horror fps being developed that seems to have a lot of love for the source material that takes it very seriously. Jared R Bair is a member of the team on it that I've talked to- community manager- and he seems to believe that its shaping up

I'd argue that a fair bit of the cringe still does come from taking something fun and cute and turning it dark -- as that has been done a million times in just this century alone. I'd rather just have a fun point-in-click adventure game in the style of the book's original artwork.

A few things: I totally agree that respect for the source material is what makes or breaks "good" games and movies. On the other hand, most people nowadays don't even have any respect for the source material themselves which is probably WHY Winnie the Pooh Blood and Honey made so much money, even if it was absolutely atrocious. You would think, if it was so bad, word of mouth alone would get people to stop watching bad movies (or even playing bad games)... however, it sometimes even encourages it. Case in point: The Velma show. How many people binge watched that JUST BECAUSE it was insanely terrible and was not even remotely respectful to the source material? My only guess is that 1: There are a lot of stupid people or 2: There are a lot of people who enjoy terrible things because they're terrible... or maybe a combination of both.

Honestly I like Winnie’s Hole because of the neat gameplay and goofiness of it all. The developer acknowledges how goofy it is and the game doesn’t seem to take itself seriously. That being said, I agree that the dark Winnie the Pooh concept is being overplayed at this point with the announcement of Blood and Honey 2 and that other dark Winnie game announced recently.

Is something dark for the sake of being edgy, or is it dark to explore a theme? This is the fundamental question a dark adaptation must ask. I could see a dark winnie the pooh with similar theming to a work like Bridge to Tarabethia, exporing the intersections between imagination and grief.

The bad Thing about Blood and Honey is: I saw a Video about the Movie and the Story itself might work pretty well but the Execution of it was absolute Garbage. Seems like there are 0,5% Story and the Rest of it is just Pooh and Piglet murdering. Also you can really see that they just wanted to make a quick Buck of it because there was no Passion put into the Costumes. Piglet looks ok but Pooh is terrible. Why does he have yellow Skin? That's his Fur Color🤦🏻‍♂️ They just took the worst and most stupid looking Halloween Mask they could find. I would appreciate it if someone would remake it but with all the good Stuff those People didn't do🙄
