This is so true. I see a direct correlation between clutter in my home and a cluttered mind.

So true. At the end of of lives here on earth we will take only the memories, time spent with family. Their laughter & hugs in our minds not any possessions. 💗

Good experiences: to clean together house, to take care of the garden, to build together an object (in my case tents for the kitchen) or to cook together. Experiences always need material things and things always cause experiences. In my opinion the point is to fond what is good for us.

Spending time (with) the family is more precious than spending money( on) them for material things.

I used to be the exact same way only a few years ago before i got into minimalism. I remember thinking "what's the point spending money on [this experience] when you have nothing to show for it?"
@kelseyd41965 жыл бұрын
Definitely agree with you on this! So many times, we've been hanging out with our now adult children and they'll be all, " Ooh, remember when we went to that one place and that funny/ cool thing happened??!!" We all get a good chuckle or sigh with relaxation thinking of that experience/trip. Makes for even more treasured family time just reliving it! They never "reminisce" about stuff we bought them in the past. The experiences--be they great or small-- those are the things our family remembers with fondness and appreciation!

The purchase of both things and experiences should be thought out. There was an experience I had of an expensive vacation that resulted in very few positive memories. I cut it a day short because I was so miserable. Lessons were learned from that trip, so I still travel, but on my own terms. I've also had many positive free experiences. As an introvert, I have discovered the importance of listening to myself, rather than popular opinion, regarding spending money on things, on experiences, etc. I really don't compare my things to others, nor see the need for spending a lot on experiences. The importance of saving and thoughtful purchase of things and experiences works better for me than just limiting things and maximizing experiences.

A simple road trip to another parish gives me enjoyment. I remember driving home one evening and playing music I used to listen to when I was younger. I loved it! The best part was watching the sunset on my way back to the west.

You are so right! My sister knew this her whole life and it took me until two years ago to realise it when I went on a long trip alone. It is worth so much more. I have learned and grown more in one month and was so grateful to have been able to do it.

I am so happy the minimal mom shared something she learned from you. So it’s April 1st, 2021 and as I was working on my April Bullet Journal I have just listened up to this point in your videos. Thank you for sharing your experience. Lots of simple practical things that can be done as we start. I look forward to listening to more, and just saw how to find out where I am in the succession of your video’s. Today is a New Start and it’s now time to get ready for bed. And even this is setting new habits... thank you. Will see more of you.

I don’t agree to the scentence:” if you spend money on experiences rather than things you’ll be beter off”. I find that I forget about that vacation or trip... only the pictures remember me of those trips. I do agree that you should prioritize time with family and friends over things. Buying expensive experiences like vacations and amusement parks even going to a restaurant is not what will be rememberd. It’s the fact that you have attention for eachother...

Spending money on experiences rather than material goods results in more positive feelings before consumption, during consumption, and after consumption. Here's the study: www.hbs.edu/faculty/Publication%20Files/Prosocial%20Behavior%20PDF_8679b98f-3ff7-4090-bbd7-f811f03b3910.pdf

The belief that buying experience is more valuable than buying things is actually contradictory in itself. (at least to some degrees) If one buys sports car, essentially he buys the experiences too.. Driving at high speed, crazy modification to already nice looking car, taking photos with his car in various locations, maybe even making KZbin video about the car and earn money from it.. To that man, experience of taking care of expensive car might be more satisfying than flying economy class to unknown exotic location . . .

How do address sentimental items? I am 54 and so want to de clutter and minimize. Just have too much stuff but have experienced loss so and some of my things are reminders of people no longer here. What about books. Again many sentimental... Or is this another deeper emotional issue?

Wow, 3 bags! I travel with one bag that fits under my airline seat. Have you traveled for several weeks with 3 bags? No problem should it works for you. I'm happier with one.

Lots of my things are a lot better than traveling. Traveling is overrated. Things last a long tim and can impact your life on a daily basis for decades potentially. Additionally, most of the things I like provide experiences: tennis racquets, skiing gear, etc.

I feel like you didn't read study #3. It says experiences are more satisfying for RICH PEOPLE. And material items are more satisfying for POOR PEOPLE. They were just studying WHY experiences were fulfilling [for rich people].
@JoshuaBecker5 жыл бұрын
They were studying how experiences contribute to greater life satisfaction than material possessions once basic needs have been met. What is your definition of rich?

You do not address the attitude of the creative person. Creating IS an experience. Van Gogh did not worry about clutter when he painted another masterpiece. I agree with a lot of what you say, but you have a narrow point of view.
