We bought a Nissan Murano from CarMax a few years ago. I was hesitant to do it, but the wife convinced me to get the best warranty. Over the time we had that car, the A/C system failed at least 4 times and they took care of it completely, per the warranty. Yes, that is because you let the dealership sell your information (I don't blame you - they can be very demanding even threatening to not sell you the car if you refuse to sign). It's one of the forms they have you sign. They call it a information security or privacy form but it basically means they will sell every bit of information you supply them. It's not required to be signed, but most dealerships will force you to sign or they won't sell you the car. They will claim it is mandatory from the government to make sure no terrorist buys a vehicle. If you are insistent on not filling it out and they are invested in getting you the car, they will forget about the form, but I would say 99% of people get conned into filling it out.

A customer who was much smarter than me told me "selling TV's on credit is evil and you shouldn't do that" and I would say "no problem, I'm not forcing your hand; if you think you can't pay off this TV in its 18 months no-interest period, then please don't finance it" (trying to play to his ego). That sentence sold him the financing and proves why I was the best at it… . Boy has my mindset changed since then (I was 19 and that was ten years ago), thanks partly to Dave Ramsey! The same tactics I used back then to sell financing were the same "lies" I told myself while racking up credit card debt over the next several years. Never again!

Robert James thing is with powertrain warranties they cover only the internals and such. If the fluids are kept changed and you don't beat on it, those will usually outlast the car itself. Dave is very right about these extended warranties. Over the course of my adult life, now exceeding 50 years, I am so far ahead by not buying warranties on anything, that I can afford to sustain a big total loss on some big ticket item, and still be way ahead. I tend to keep vehicles for a decade or more. Dave is also right that, if you can't afford to save $50-$100 a month for maintenance of a car, you can't afford to own a car. What you are doing by buying an extended warranty, is allowing a middleman to insert himself into your life and pump money out of your pocket.

One time we actually used a Sams Club 3-year extended warranty THREE times for the life of a desktop BUT It took around a MONTH for it to get fixed each time! One year after we got it, HP told us there was a problem with the motherboard and offered their own extended 1-year warranty. Within a year, our computer stopped working and HP took their sweet time replacing the board. A year later, same problem again! This time Sams Club fixed it, and they also took a month to fix it. Next year... AGAIN. Yes we got our money's worth out of the warranty, but taking 3 total months of computer usage was not worth it! Back then I could've spent just as much having a private computer shop fix it with a better model motherboard, not to mention I know how to replace it myself now. Warranties guaranty peace of mind but that was furthest emotion from my mind during all that!

I know my situation is not the norm but to rebuild my engine Chevrolet quoted me $9,000. So I just ended up doing it myself with a buddy over the course of 2 months which consumed all of my time for those two months and still cost me $3, 000. now I will admit there's a lot of things I could have done to completely avoid that situation but at the end of the day I was only 6000 miles past the point where they would have rebuilt it under warranty and if I had an extended warranty I would have never had to do it myself.

I agree with Dave on this. For new items that already have a limited warranty, I never buy an extended warranty and I feel I have come out way ahead over the years. Instead of getting an extended warranty, keep that money in the bank, and make a separate column in your checkbook or savings account to reserve that money for future repairs. It adds up after a while for each item you don't get an extended warranty on. You'll have quite a sum saved and that money doesn't expire like a warranty. If you need a repair, take if from that fund. If you don't need a repair your fund keeps growing and you get to keep that money.

Do you know what that “limited” coverage means ? It means it covers defects only. Defects typically happen within the first year of a vehicles life. Most new car warranties cover a car for about three years. After that time, there should be sufficient wrecked cars to pull parts off of. For this strategy, it is best to buy common cars where there would be a fair supply of wrecked cars, and knowledgeable mechanics to work on them. Also, less expensive common cars tend to have less expensive replacement parts if you purchase the parts new.

0:44 because the failure rate is 12% you're saying that 12% of the money is paid back out on repairs? That completely depends on the cost of the repairs and the pricing of the warranty. If a company sells items they buy from a manufacturer and they also have a company that does repairs they could sell a warranty and repair it themselves. So when you come back to the store after it broke it would be better for the store to repair that item for you and get all of that money, rather than selling you a new one and the manufacturer getting a cut of that money. With that in mind they could set a price for the warranty that benefits both them and the customer because they would not necessarily have the manufacturers costs or profits to consider. Why would you not buy that kind of warranty?

Extended warranties usually cover things that don't break. Lol or will cover something for 2 years when the average time of it breaking is 2.5 years. Usually you find that things end up breaking right after the warranty is up. Or for cars in the fine print they say that they don't cover things that are average maintenance and only cover things that you hardly ever replace. Such as break pads not being covered etc. I saved $2000 because my dad is a mechanic and explained this to me before I bought.

A lot of factors come into play with car warranties. I would only purchase from the manufacturer backed warranty not 3rd party. It also depends on the dealership and service advisor you take your car to. The warranty I have covers a lot but getting the approval for the work to done could be a problem. The techs don’t like to do warranty work because it does not pay well so they will hit you with the excuse your car is fine can’t find the issue. I have been told this from the service advisor I used at Honda. He fought for me a few times when work needed to be done because the techs kept saying everything is fine. My service advisor would get in the car himself and tell them that’s BS how don’t you feel that weird shifting and he would go to the service manager. So a lot of issues come in to play with extended warranties. I got about $1200 worth of works done the car so far. Just has my starter replaced yesterday no charge.

I almost always get the extended warranty on electronic items at Best Buy and appliances at Sears. It seems like most electronics have about a two year lifespan. I have used it on Kindle (twice), wireless headset, other items. At Best Buy, at the end of two years, I usually end up with an upgrade to the original because rarely is the same item available two years later. Verizon insurance on my phone pays off too because phones are made so cheaply. My car extended warranty has already paid for itself.

I bought squaretrade warranty for my $1000 laptop purchase. It's was about 18% of the purchase price. 2 year accident plan with a $70 deductible. I did it, because a cup of coffee on a motherboard usually means bye be computer and it usually never works the same again. In hinds sight though, I probably wouldn't do it again. I sell my phones and laptops about 2 years after they're new since after that, the depreciation drops like a rock.

I was hassled over and over to get glass coverage for my auto policy. I worked out it is about $200 a year extra. I straight up said to the guy "look, replacing a windshield is about $200. Do you really think I will need to replace the windshield more often then once a year" he still tries to convince me to get it. Then it's auto club membership, about $300 a year. "Look man, that's the price of THREE tows a year. In the last 15 years of owning cars I have had to get a tow maybe 5 times. That's NINE times more cost effective to just PAY for the tows." Even IF free replacement tires came with the membership, which they don't, it still wouldn't be worth it.

My personal philosophy is to only buy insurance on the things you cannot afford to lose. Having fire insurance on a house would definitely be one given that buying a home is typically a one-time purchase until retirement. Meanwhile, buying extended warranty on a humidifier (which I almost did) would be pointless. Plus you have to deal with the warranty people when something breaks and many times they say "sorry, that's not covered."

Bought the car in 12/18 and what do you know the front struts and motor on the driver side running board have all gone bad . Dealer told me without the warranty my price to fix all this was $2500 dollars but since I had the warranty I had to pay $100 dollars . I'm glad I got the warranty I'm already $2500 in in repairs on a $4000 warranty and I still got 30,000 miles of driving left to do on the warranty .
@collinparsons33636 жыл бұрын
Dave hasn't seen any videos of Doug DeMuro's CarMax Range Rover. He bought a 2006 Range Rover at CarMax in 2012. It cost 26k and the warranty was 4k. It was a 6 year 60000 mile bumper to bumper warranty, and by the time the warranty was up, it paid out around 16k which means CarMax lost 12k on the warranty and paid out well over what the vehicle was worth at the end which topped out around 9k. This happened because he bought a notoriously unreliable vehicle that was expensive to repair and for some reason the warranty was being sold at an absolute steal. He was getting a 6 year old Range Rover with a 6 year warranty, meaning that it would still be covered at 12 years old and around 120000 miles, and that the vehicle never had a warranty for that long before. Not when it was brand new, and not when it was certified pre-owned. Not hard to connect the dots and have a pretty good idea that the warranty is going to pay out more than what it cost to buy. This doesn't mean that you should always get a CarMax warranty though. If you're getting a reliable used car like a Honda or Toyota, it is probably unnecessary. But if you're buying an unreliable luxury car like a Range Rover, then it's probably worth considering.
@Aceofspacedsace7 жыл бұрын
Dave really like your show, however I have to disagree on a vsa for a car. It is not a bad idea to put a $1500 warranty for a 8year 120k on a 40k car. Shop rate is 120 an hour, if you have to replace a starter in 8 years your 70% there plus any electrical issue that goes with it
@rushiasingsfasola6 жыл бұрын
Have you ever actually tried to use that warranty for something as hard to diagnose as electrical? Assuming it's a dealership (hence the outrageous 120/hr), they aren't actually paying their staff a lot for warranty work (ask the insiders). Sooooo, what makes you think a young-ish guy who is paid a flat rate (meaning he gets paid for half an hour to do a diagnostic regardless of whether it takes 5 minutes or an hour) is going to take take the time to figure out what wire/connector/part is actually loose/clogged/weak/dead/etc? And assuming that you get that angelic technician who is willing to take an hour to figure out a problem that he only gets paid 30 minutes to figure out.....and do that job at "warranty work" prices *cough* Oh come on, you know that he's going to try to upsell you something you don't need right away, so that he can at least get a real job from the fake one you just gave him! It's better to pay the technicians rather than the uncaring corporate company selling a warranty. You WILL get better work.

About Best Buy, That is not true... 1. At Best Buy, extended warranties are not so that a comission could be made to the Sales Consultant. No one in Best Buy is on comission. 2. Extended warranties on major appliances make sense though. It may be about 10% of the cost of the appliance itself, however, if something goes wrong, it pays for itself. You're also paying for peace-of-mind. Think of extended warranty on appliances as insurance. Of course you expect the insurance company to make money because not everyone who buys insurance will use it. But it's shared risk. For example, a $3000 fridge warrantied for 5 years is $299. Now, imagine worse case scenerio, your fridge has to be replaced within the 5 years... Do you have another $3000 handy? That would be catastrophic to your finances. However, $299 for peace-of-mind, may be a worthwhile investment.
@e2sguy7 жыл бұрын
That sounds great on paper but he’s using averages . When it happens to you it’s not the same in the real world . Wait till your transmission goes after the manufacturers warranty . See if it costs 187 . You will be on the hook for three times the cost of the warranty

Extended warranty depends on the product. Would I get one for a 200.00 Smart TV of course not, would I get one for $2000.00 yes. It depends on the item and situation for a washer, dryer, refrigerator, 65 inch tv I am getting a warranty where they come to my home. I am not trying to haul it back to the store. Life happens tv could tip over, liquid could be spilled on it, child could hit it damage the screen, power surge or it could just not turn on. It can be Western House, Sony, Magnavox, JVC, Samsung, RCA, etc. So extended warranty is situational.

I agree; however, I believe his point is that if you purchase the extended warranty on every car you ever own, the statistical probability that multiple engines would blow up in your lifetime is low to NIL. Statistically, over the course of 70 years you'll own a vehicle, the dealership still comes out ahead. Or to put it another way, if you buy 20 televisions in your lifetime and you buy the extended warranty every time, even if a TV is replaced by those warranties 1, 2, even 3 or more times, Best Buy still charged you far more during your life than they paid out in replacement.

I can afford a washer, but it p*sses me off that they have this planned obsolescence. If that tub was made of stainless-or even galvanized-steel, this would NOT have happened. On most large kitchen appliances, it's only $100 to $125 total to have that appliance covered for 4 years beyond the manufacturer's first year. So you'll get 5 full years parts and service coverage for any reason for $100-$125. As much as we use our appliances and as shoddy as they are made now, that warranty service paid for itself many times over. But you have to buy the warranty at the point of sale.
