Why F1 Manager 2022 FAILED!

In march 2022, a game was announced that had the community in great anticipation: F1 Manager 2022. However, just over a year later, the game is rather considered a failure in retrospect, which is due to the fact that there were many lost opportunities and unfilled potential. In this video, Marvin explains which aspects in particular caused the game to fail.

The game definitely has flaws, some of them quite serious, but the video gives off a big "they did not nail everything on the first try, therefore the game is a complete failure" vibe, which I disagree with.

You must of not played f1 manager 1999. Yeah 1999. Had way way more features, way more fun and addictive. It’s their first try but it’s not the first manager game. They have a bunch of games they could of researched and built from.

To be fair, football manager has been around for an extremely long time but is probably the most successful manager game out there and should be the blueprint to be followed

Motorsport Manager is by many considered to be a better game compared to F1 manager even though that game is from 2014 and was made by a small team. Since F1M was 60 euros from the start I think people are allowed to voice their dissatisfaction with the gameplay loops being boring, the game lacking features, and just the big amount of bugs and bad AI.

If you ask for a triple A price you need to nail it on the first try. MM is three times cheaper and does a better job than F1M22... and they had only one try because it wasn't an annual iteration! Not to mention that F1M22 has no workshop support which is telling a lot about how much they care about the people playing this game... heck, they don't even have a game editor! 👎

The biggest problem was probably that the game got repetetive, and it was not a big challenge to win either. I won the drivers and constructors championship with haas after 3 seasons and after that I just had to research the same things and upgrade the same things to stay on the top. No challenge at all, and you should be able to skip all of the free practice sessions and get a good tune. The Ai always made the cars 60% at best, when i could get 100% easily, it just took 30 minutes before every race and I even knew the outcome of everything

100%, this was by far the biggest problem with last game, it was just far far to easy to develop the car miles faster than competitors. I won the constructers championship with Alpine in my first season and by season 2 I was finishing races so far ahead of the competition the game became very boring.

I thought it was a fun game myself! Played 4 or 5 seasons and was addicted to it. Yeah they could make it better but it's the first of the series🤷‍♂️

I agree, I hope that the developers build upon and really add to the game, it still has that potential that other manager games have, I hope the developers have learnt from F1 manager 22 and go from there. It's all I really want.

I'm afraid the developer Frontier has a history of letting their games languish. This was a big opportunity for them and they missed the mark. I could see them loosing the license if they don't fix this game.

"Failure" is a bit of a stretch. The game definitely has issues, but it was a solid first attempt. This is the F1 management game in 20 years. And I can think of multiple games that were far bigger flops than F1 Manager. I haven't played much recently, but I definitely had plenty of fun with it and I'm confident this year's game will be a step forward.

A little harsh I think. It’s only the first version. And the race day immersion is truly groundbreaking for a management style game. You give Football Manager a lot of love, but it’s been around for decades and still doesn’t come close to this level of match day detail.

and im going to answer your 4 reasons.. 1. having humor does not make it for the casual gamer, if you watch F1 then you would know the drivers can be funny on the team radio from time to time, football manager has had longer to improve that game and vs a new game thats alittle unfiar and you know it. the depth of the game might have something to do with they rushed it to get it out. (like i thought he didnt think it threw as a F1 fan) 2. silders might seem bad but its a fast way to do a set up system as i said in point one they rushed it to get it out, you are comparing 2 totally different sports you dont have corner/kicking etc etc in football manager. that point is invalid from you try, its hard for you maybe. 3. you are comparing it to a TV show done from drama are you kidding me? Motorsports manager was not rushed so they had time to think items threw, but i will agree it does lack that drama. 4. all the titles you said have had countless years to improve the game, again its the 1st one and they did an OK job for a rushed game. no it is a solid building block for F1 23 and you know that they have had time to improve items make changes. no they cant as again they rushed 22 proving and you cant hit a home run when you rush a game. no i dont want to sub to you this is the kind of content i expect from you guys, not very well thought threw and lacking all the details as well you compare items that should not be.

it shows that a lot of the people developing the game didn't have a clue about the actual sport of F1, rules being incorrect, completely getting the f1 fan demographic wrong, making a game that is good for a 5 hour season and nothing more, then to give up so early in the game cycle doomed the game

I've seen his pinned topic on the Steam forum asking for feedback but if I'm honest I highly doubt it will happen. SEGA wasn't prepared to back Playsport for a sequel so that means they need to find another publisher prepared to gamble their money in going head to head with a very similar game which has the F1 license. Either that or they'd have to dip into their own pockets, possibly holding a Kickstarter to cover any shortfall. Whilst Playsport certainly have a solid framework in their original PC game along with newer features in their mobile games, there's only so much you can accomplish in porting that functionality with the small team they'll be able to afford. Frontier on the other hand can easily cover the salaries of 100+ devs year-round plus any additional outsourcing as required. So even if Playsport manage to get all their ducks in a row, a game potentially launching 2+ years down the line (alongside the fourth annual iteration of F1 Manager) would probably find it very tough to compete. Christian West is probably looking to see where the chips lie in the reception of F1 Manager 2023 before making any decisions. If it gets good reviews and they manage to tackle a lot of the criticisms of the first game I'd imagine the chances of a Motorsport Manager 2 on PC would be pretty much dead.

this game was released on consoles. management games meant to work with a playstation controler are very limited. no scroller, 3 info on screen. lack of database and features are resulting of this hardware limitation.

It wasnt an F1 management game, thats the core issue. Its a race engineer sim that insists you still hire two race engineers. Grand Prix World is old now, but THAT is a team management game. Theres no meat here dor actual team management fans. But a hell of a lot of time spent waiting to change a setting or two. Sessions are long and repetetive, which you cant do much about - which is why true management games give you enough meaningful to do outside race/quaki/practice sessions that its a viable playstyle (and safe) to allow sessions to be skipped/simmed because the staff you hire do the job qnd you arent penalised for not wanting to be bored for an hour so you can min/max the setups you already PAY TWO ENGINEERS to do for you because youre far more concerned that youre sponsors are reluctant to recommit, you can only find customer engines and your lead driver is being poached.

“On football manager they are rated on 39 numerical categories” stop you there mate, that’s just the visible categories. Go on the editor and you will find at least 100 categories, most of which aren’t visible but are needed for player abilities. For example, ‘consistency’ and ‘important matches’.

Frontier did well for their first attempt. Yes it had its flaws, but this was more of a good game than a bad one. Quite a solid base to build on for the next instalment. I'd give this 7.5 out of 10.

I feel the game is to long. I look at motorsport manager on pc that you could choose how long the race could be. You should also be able to let drivers control there own ers management to some extent

This is the first game of the series. If you can’t succeed in it then thats a skill issue. The game is great with some flaws but nothing that wont prevent you from playing it.

I really enjoyed the game. It had its flaws, but I think most people are accepting of those since it's the first iteration of the series. They made what could have been the dullest game ever pretty fun. Not classic, but fun.

It only took me two seasons to win both championships with Aston Martin, and the third season was literally 2014 Mercedes. After you win that first championship it’s impossible to fall off unless you do it on purpose. I will say that alpine had a shot for a few race wins in season 3 and 4, but they were never developing fast enough so it was just me at Aston, redbull, and Merc. Ferrari actually fell off into the midfield which was cool. It’s a 7/10 game, hoping it gets better this year.

I enjoyed playing through a season of F1 manager 22, but for the most part, it had some really disappointing features. I enjoyed the car development aspect of the game. Managing parts and hiring engineers and designers was a lot of fun. But I race to race gameplay became repetitive and stale very quickly. Particularly with car setup. I didn’t think a Team Boss would be required to be tweaking car setups to this level and that perhaps it should have been simplified or left to the drivers and engineers to find optimum settings. Another feature that was pretty poor was the fact that agreeing a new contract with a driver replaced your existing driver with immediate effect. This should have included options on when to commence the contract. A young driver academy could have been implemented too to manage up and coming stars. There are young drivers that you cannot sign. And then you have to replace your experienced 3rd driver with a kid if you want to develop them, rather than sign them up for future seasons and watch them progress in F3/F2. These are basic features that you have to wonder why they were not included. I hope F1 23 introduces these features, changes the way you sign drivers. Simplifies car setup to stop race weekends feeling so monotonous, and tweaks tyre strategy, safety cars, red flags etc to give us more to manage on the pit wall. Also budget caps and more facility management would be welcome!

That is why I play motorsport manager. Maybe there are no real tracks, etc but with mods you can play f1 2012, 1993,2007 and many more + you get WEC, f2, f3 and many more. With that you can create quite realistic experience by choosing the right mods. I'm currently having a blast with 2012 Lotus.

I think the biggest problem with the game was every career feels the same. You go in and lose for the first season and a half. Drivers always finish in their in-game ranking, so if you have the 8th quickest car it doesnt matter you do in the race, youre finishing 16th. And then you quit the game after 3 races because thats all you see. It turns out that developing the correct car parts in the correct way over and over is the way to win. So yeh if you stick around for 3 seasons you can win, but then to stay on top you just do the same things. The actual race strategy, ACTUAL race day does not matter. Its WAY too car and numbers focused. Obviously in f1 if you want to win you need the quickest car, but in real life things go wrong for top teams way more often than in this game. Pierre Gasly won monza 2020 in not the fastest car. He’d have NO chance of winning a race in this game with not the fastest car, regardless of what you do in the race.

You can't create a thoughtful simulation with active code and good graphics at the same time, modern PCs will have low fps. So they made an arcade-strategies game, but not sim-strategies game - and this disappoints me very much

As a first entry i think they set good basis to start working with, i think the biggest problem with sales also comes from the moment of launch, basically when the real f1 competition died on the spot. One of the biggest issues with FM is presentation, and here we got it. Now it is time to improve the depth of the mechanics and considering they just announced F1 Manager 23 they cannot mistake one more time.

Management games don't need fancy graphics. Focus on the substance. Top down 2D races would be fine. Licensed F1 games will always be muck as they're all about selling to a broad audience.

In my opinion, f1 manager failed because it was not realistic. Fans want to play an f1 game but it wasnt even close to it. For example one of the commentators was missing and was replaced by someone else. The radio antenna was missing. The steering wheels were the same for every team and they didnt even bother to make models for other drivers other than those that are already in f1. Some of the drivers were also missing like ma boy Daniil Kvyat.

Yes there was a couple of things on F1 Manager 22 that could’ve been a lot better, but we need to remember this is their first actual go of an F1 manager game and I must say they really hit it out of the park. For me the races were too boring and long and when you manage your drivers it’s not that much of an impact I think because you can just setup 3 things with tyres fuel and ERS Edit: Overall I think that the problem is F1 itself cause in Football you have so many matches so many leagues players and just a way bigger sport you can setup different strategies and Player combinations for every game and in F1 you have just the same lineal thing every weekend you can’t outplay or surprise everyone with a strategy or young players

Me and my dad started playing again and in our first season we finished p3 with alpha tauri in the constructors. At the start of the new season we have the second best car already. It’s way to easy, there should be different modes so it’s easier

That is precisely the problem. We do we have to rely on mods from such an old and outdated game to have a decent motorsport manager experience? How can an almost 30 year old game still be the best manager released? That is ridiculous. Good points but not great ones, like your main problem is just with scouting? No mate. The game is too easy, way too easy and thus each weekend blends together when you just see your Williams team lock out the front row and blitz the competition after just one season. Moreover, the lack of detail is disappointing. It tries to cover everything but does it so poorly and again the game is repetitive and simplistic.

Also it's really annoying that when you put in so much time into these races and seasons just for the board of directors to keep upping the bar after each season until it becomes impossible to maintain. This video is full of bs. Yes the game has flaws no one denies that but fail?? Thats too much hate. This is the first game of a maybe-future-franchise. This game has the best graphics compared to the other manager games, decent amount of content, decent managering substantiality, acceptable overall ai for a first game made. Did you follow the forums or qnas or developer reports? I did, did you? Did you give them any feedback, any at all? Many people shared their opinions, ideas, complains and wishes with the developers and they seem to acknowledge them. They're about to release their next game, if they keep the game almost the same, then i'll accept the failure statement. until then, i think you're just overreacting just for the sake of flaming.
