Signing a rookie and starting him year 1 is just stupid. I was on the draft an edge team too until i realized that not 1 was worthy of a top 10 pick. They all had question marks. So often we see qbs drafted high and go to teams expected to be their salvation. But, the more successful qbs actually sat a little while in the system and learned the difference in talent level before being thrown out there. Add to that that the addition of cousins virtually guarantees the falcons wont be picking near the top 10 in the next 2-3 years. What then is the cost of moving from the 17-25 range to the top 2-3. For the present and the future the falcons played this perfectly.

Everybody keeps comparing Green Bay. Jordan Love struggle when they first started him over Rodgers. Also, it ain’t like he has lit the league up either, Love is an average to good Qb since being the starter. I would have felt differently if Kirk didn’t get broke off a boatload of money and we had a vertical passing game with fast wideouts to stretch the field. That’s what Washington had, Rams to when they won the SB.

The biggest cheat code in the NFL is a good Qb in a rookie contract. If your name is not mahomes or Brady not many teams reach the superbowl with Qbs not in their rookies contract.

It’s likely the falcons wanted to trade down, but they didn’t like the offers. If they didn’t have top ten grades for a defensive player, they wouldn’t reach for one (no one else drafted any defensive guys anywhere near top ten, so the Falcons weren’t alone). They probably had a huge grade on Penix, and it came down to best player available. And if Cousins winds up getting hurt, Penix comes in and looks great, the Falcons are going to look like geniuses

Taking the second best QB in your eyes bc (he fell to you) at 8 (where you’ll have 5yrs of flexibility) while u have a 100m dollar Starter (currently rehabbing) on a 2 yr deal (essentially) or 2. Draft a DE that could turn out to be no better than Beasley or Takk and wait until next year to TRY and trade up which would require something like 3 firsts & 2 second rounders to come from the 20s where Kirk will have you positioned due to his success in the regular season. and then that guy may not even be as good as Penix in your eyes (but you p a QB bc you passed on one in 24’) 🤨 Don’t Worry, i’ll wait…….😒

It was one of the worst picks in history, the falcons arent playing for the year 2027, it was the #8 pick, you can get a guy that can help your team right now. and the goal is to win now.
