“Fight Club didn’t do great at the box office, but 25 years later, it’s safe to say it’s reached the target audience” literal definition of ‘aged like fine wine’. Well said.

I watched it in a cinema and left with my jaw dragging on the ground. Such a brilliant piece of art, masquerading as a film about dudes 'fighting the man', it can never be bettered.

This is not correct. For a rated R movie it did great at the box office. It was actually number 1 at the box office it's opening weekend. And in 1999 It was not all or nothing that opening weekend.

There are a couple moments that stand out to me. The first wen the penguin says "slide". The narrator later says, "to let everything that doesn't truly matter, slide." It's key because it gets to the point about minimalizing the junk in life to just deal with the things that are truly important to you. Later with the human sacrifice, the line, "would you rather be dead?" It really drives home the fact that we can make so many excuses for why we don't do what we really want to in life, how we're ready to just give up on our dreams. Finally in the car crash scene when Tyler asks the other guys in the car what they wish they had done in life. One responds, "Build a house" the other "Paint a self-portrait". The self-portrait and the human sacrifice about being a vet aren't "masculine" goals, which so many people miss thinking the movie is judging and pushing someone to be more masculine, it's really about being who you are and understanding your place in the world. The fighting is raw and strips down all of the noise in society to basic survival. The consumerism and being a "corporate drone" are all things that cloud us from being who we actually are and it leaves us pretending to be the person we think we're supposed to be, to me that is the struggle between the narrator and Tyler. Tyler's line, "you aren't your fucking khakis." is literally saying, you aren't what you own or how you dress, you are a person underneath all of the crap, and that is who you are supposed to be.
@unknown5150variable
@unknown5150variable 21 күн бұрын
IMHO i some cases there is nothing more masculine than ignoring societies expectations in favor of your values, goals, morals, dreams, doing you without regards to what society expects of you or tells you your supposed to do in order to be viewed as masculine

OMG, I noticed that through the movie, the only person, other than Edward Norton's character, Jack, that can hear, understand and acknowledge the narration is Brad Pitt's character, Tyler Durden. In the scene where he is working at a movie theatre and Edward Norton is explaining cigarette burns that tell you when it is time to change reels and sync them up, Brad Pitt's character points at the little symbol at the top of the screen. This is further proven right at the end of the movie, when Tyler Durden calls Jack out on his clever narration joke, where he picks up where he was when the movie starts. Knowing this, when I rewatched the movie, it added a new layer knowing that whenever Tyler Durden is around, he can also hear the narration. And when he is not around, he is still aware of everything that Jack was thinking. Amazing.

Man, your video is so good that it makes me want to rewatch the whole film under a new perspective, and I've seen it several times already, I feel like you need through an "anti-system" phase to get this film, just like The Matrix, which came out the same year, and also tells us the boredom that corporate life and office works offer, another movie from 1999 that taclkes onto those themes is Office Space.

I think the reason Fight Club is so rewatchable is the dense script, i remember the first 5 pr 6 times i watched it, i always noticed new things, whether it's hints in scenes (Like how Tyler appears before the airplane scene) , or new quotes, there is no way you would notice everything from the 1st time.

the movie has nothing to do with masculinity. Aggression =\= masculinity. In fact every person, man or woman, has a tendency for aggressiveness if they feel that they are missing something in life. Women manifest their aggressivness differently tho (namecalling, innuendo, slander, rumour spreading in school e.g. ; everybody knows stories like that), which is why everybody associates it that way

One very interesting theory about fight club is that the narrator have testicular cancer! He has two choices to handle it. To remove his testicles and get better, or ignore it and probably die! Everything in the movie only happened in his head! He created two personalities! Tyler who stands for the ignoring side, and Marla who accepts the removal of the testicles! I've seen that video too. I don't buy it. Tyler Durden isn't trans. Marla does exist. You are not a complete person if you don't reproduce.

The problem with fight club is that it becomes worse with every rewatch.

@@bat2906 the novelty wears of and you see through how it glorifies toxic masculinity. Even at the end Marla Singer is just an object for the success of the protagonist. Also there is nothing to replace the fascist cult he created. Though I have to say it has been quite a while since I last saw the movie, so my memory is a bit iffy. Still, 3 or 4 years ago when I watched it last I was really dissapointed in it, because it felt like I grew since Ive last seen it, but the movie still appealed to my 18 year old edgy me.

@carlosdumbratzen6332 The movie simply does not glorify toxic masculinity. The fascist cult, a negative thing, was the result of this toxic masculinity proving that it isn’t the answer. I don’t know if I didn’t articulate this well in the video but that was a point I was trying to make.

Think you're getting it wrong with always calling Edwards character the "Narrator". Because the narrator character is kind of a third personality for the character.
