5:13 AF film cameras of the late 90s and early 2000s are severely underrated and can be picked up for peanuts if you know which ones to look for. They have everything you need to get started and will keep you entertained for a cool minute. About the only two things "wrong" with them is their slow frame rate, but we ain't photographing sports, AND! The often expensive batteries they take. I recommend picking up the optional booster drives which most use AA batteries. Since they're all plastic fantastic, it doesn't add that much weight. My favorite AF camera of the era is the Nikon N75. It was my first 'real' camera in 2003 and have since picked up three over the years. They're not build to last unfortunately if you drop them. The Rebel G was introduced in 1996 btw.

I too have had so many cameras but I am essentially down to just 3 film cameras. They are all BATTERYLESS!!! That is I sold every camera that had a circuit board in it and now I only carry a Leica M3 / 50mm 1.5 (yes that's correct), a Hasselblad 500CM with a 60mm and 150mm, and my baby Chamonix 45F2 with a set of Fujinons a 90mm, 150mm, 250mm and experimenting with a 100 year old Brass Aplanaat 210mm. I used to have an Mamiya 7, Leica M6, and Nikon F3 - but all required batteries so if the board died so did the functions - especially for the Mamiya 7.

Hi Cielo! Fun to watch and delightful presentation. I have been shooting since 1971 and never ever spent more than $350 on a camera. Had a Nikkormat, Nikon FM, Leica M3, Olympus XA, Minolta SRT 201 and believe it or not a Pentax 6x7 BEAST! Had a fully functional B/W darkroom in my 1 bedroom apt up until about 13 years ago. Super Chromega D 4x5 enlarger cranking out 16x20 and 20 x24 RC prints in my bathroom!! Unfortunately, shooting film just doesn't make any sense anymore unless one either hates money or is making money from the process. I love the craft of conventional photography and was never happier than the days of endless hours in the darkroom, music blasting and working on my latest masterpiece. Lightroom just isn't the same. However I am a photographer at heart and am perfectly content roaming the streets of NYC with my trusty little unimpressive but totally adequate Canon G1X. All the best to you. P.S. LOL on the Pentax 17....REALLY Cielo.....REALLY???
@WithCielo23 күн бұрын
I have never had the pleasure of developing my photos in a darkroom. That's very next level! I am feeling the financial pain of film but man, the photos and the tones. Not replicable with digital. And hey, don't knock the Pentax 17 til you try it! It's so sharp! But yeah, it's not for everyone.

@@WithCielo I would encourage any photographer to not get caught up on technical image quality but rather on "seeing better". Look at the works of some of the masters and ask yourself (as I did) "If I were standing there would I have seen that or just walked by?" Look at the work of Fan Ho, for instance. It forces you to be more aware of all the opportunities that you encounter every day for a great shot. A great photo taken with an inferior camera is still a great photo. A lousy photo taken with a state of the art, top of the line camera with all the bells and whistles is still a lousy photo. Your passion and enthusiasm is exciting. Go hunting!

I have quite a few cameras (20+ - (mostly film, some digital - ranging from 110 all the way up to 4x5) and I genuinely feel bad if I don't use them regularly so I cycle them out every couple weeks to ensure they all get used (worst thing ever for a mechanical device is sitting...) My last purchase was a surprise "great" - as I had bought all the new TTArtisan M42 lenses (100f2.8, 75mmf1.5, 250 mirror) I wanted a native M42 film camera. Since I like less common stuff - I ended up buying a great condition Voightlander VSL1-TM (mid sixties - thread mount.) It was cheap and different - so why not. What a great camera it is - especially paired with the modern lenses and to my surprise the meter still works and is accurate! I also have a Pentax 17 - and it is an great little camera. The hardest thing with the 17 is readjusting to use it like a point and shoot digital or cell phone. You have to abandon the "save the frames" mentality with full frame or larger formats and shoot with reckless abandon! Also, the 17's price is more than far - people are just unrealistic. The reason you are having issues with the shutter button on your 17 is because there is a slight delay between the press of the button and the shutter firing. This is because the camera moves the lens from it's parked position inbetween the shutter press and shutter fire. It is a quirk - but you will get used to it.
@WithCielo13 күн бұрын
It's great when you can pair modern lenses with vintage cameras. I recently just found out I could pair my Canon lenses to my old EOS form the 90s. Very cool. Thanks for the info on the Pentax 17 shutter lag. Knowing now what's happening I guess it's not so bad.

0:00 I'm probably one of the ONLY 35mm film (wedding) photographers with a small collection. While I love the hunt and thrill of buying "new to me" gear, I pretty much have everything need. Though, sometimes I do like picking up spares just in case. That said, I don't buy anything unless I sell something I'm not using, to fund the next piece of gear, while giving someone else the opportunity to pick up minty analog gear for a good price. And the reason why, is because it doesn't matter how well you take care of your collection, when you kick the bucket it's either one, going in the trash or two, sold off for peanuts in estate sale at best, a yard sale at worst. I worked at various camera stores in Los Angeles in a span of ten years and you wouldn't believe the boxes and boxes of sometimes rare and expensive cameras we'd get as donations because the children (most in their 30-50s) of whomever passed, didn't want to go through the hassle of selling them off one by one. It's how I got an F3 with a 50 1.4 for five bucks in 2009. In 2017 while in college, we had an older gentleman as a student who the majority of the photo department didn't get along with. Kicked the bucket, and EVERYONE was lined up around the block to grab what they could in the estate sale. Many came out with a Leica or two. Disgusting behavior. It was then I realized I didn't want my cameras and lenses to go through the same when I'm gone. So, I use everything I own and don't accumulate more than five working cameras, three spares and about a dozen lenses at any given time. And yes, they are all used in rotation for weddings. Specifically my G type Nikkor lenses, no thanks to the built-in AF motor.

I currently have about 30 film cameras, ranging from a wooden large-format camera with no brand markings on it that I can find, to a Canon AE-1. The AE-1 (non-program) was my go-to camera for several years, until I got a Canon T70, which does auto exposure, plus motorized loading, rewinding and film advancing. My latest acquisition is a Soviet Zorki-4, My wife gives me a hard time every time I get another camera, but I've slowed down quite a bit. I only go for really unique ones now, which are harder to find. The only one I really want is a professional medium-format. Obviously a Hasselblad, but I think more realistically a Mamiya. I try to use all my cameras at least once. That is, running a roll of film through each one that works.

Inevitably With Cielo's camera collection will grow. A cheap but good addition might be a Ricoh KR-10, or similar. I don't have one, but have used it. Belgian photographer Els Vanopstal is a fan of the Praktica MTL3; it is worth seeing her video about it. A really funky 80's P&S worth investigating is the Pentax PC35 AF-M with its excellent 35 mm f/2.8 lens, clamshell design, autofocus, motor wind, and pop-up flash (by demand). Mine was free, found dumped in a builder's skip by the roadside. If you want a cheap, but good Canon FD zoom lens for the F and the AE-1, then I recommend trying the 35-70 mm f/3.5-4.5, which can focus down to about 30 cm. They usually come free with a camera, such as the excellent, but underrated T-70. I could continue...... 🙂

My favorite, a Nikon F, holds special significance. It was once my father's, a silent witness to his experiences during the Vietnam War.

Mechanical cameras will last you ages... People, a hundred years from now, will be hunting these down. They are like swiss mechanized watches, highly sought after...

Totally agree - it's hard to find anything purely mechanical nowadays. Even cars.

Nice photos and cameras. I have many as well. They were given to me or they were under $20 bucks. leica is overrated and way too expensive. Plus I do not like rangefinders.

Thank you. You’re one of the lucky ones who’s given cameras. It’s very satisfying to take great photos and know you only spent $20 on the camera.

Nice to get it verified. Women can be camera nerds too! ❤️But I can’t really understand people continuing shooting analog. Most of those I know that does it. Goes digital almost at once after the film is developed. So why? I’m not a good hobby photographer. But analog? Poisonous chemicals, film manufacturing isn’t without environmental costs, transport of films and so on. Not a big environmental foot print. But ….Nostalgia and a certain look that probably one can create in whatever software one use for editing? But sometimes I miss the old darkroom. Dipping the photo paper and the picture appearing. The choice of when to stop the process…Black and white analog shooting I guess I might see the point with. B&W digital isn’t the same as analog. (At least not when I try. )Or is that because B&W isn’t as common now days? It was the norm for most hobbyists back in the days. Or maybe I’m just one more grumpy old man.

I have not had the pleasure of developing in a dark room. And yes, women can definitely be camera nerds too!
@cdl022 күн бұрын
@@WithCielo Ilford Photo's channel is worth watching for darkroom action. Many women photographers are featured. Its the photographer's kitchen, so if you can bake a cake, or cook a dinner, then the darkroom will not be a problem. Also, let's not forget the great Lee Miller! She was a model, as well.
