I think it would be really awesome to be able to structure your map in the easier forge and then take that map to the more complicated forge to refine and perfect the map that you structured

@@LEGOBoy922 no its really a waste of time. it would actually be more like starting your map on sketch paper with prime and on sand paper with classic forge. because if you could use the advanced forge already why would you activity limit your self? im looking forward to infinite and i know 343i will push forge much further again but knowing something needs to be added to accommodate new and less experienced forgers.

Forge world is awesome. I think I would be great though if there were forgeable firefight maps. Imagine massive firefight including scarabs waves on massive maps like forge world. Firefight had so much potential and I think it would make a great video topic.

Only issue I can think of it the nav-meshing needed for AI but it'd be awesome if they got around that hurdle

I hadnt thought of that. While that could be complicated, that might be able to be fixed with some light rubber banding attached to the player. This is what is done in the final waves of firefight when the ai hunt you down. But this could get laggy on such a large map and I'm sure there would be other issues with this.

I remember Spartan Ops in H4 and thought to myself since they reused every map (including multiplayer maps) that if we had enemy spawns and Reach's Forge editor, we could have made our own campaign. Sadly is Reach was a sandbox type which let the community create the experience, H4 was under a more studio directed philosophy. You didn't have the experience you wanted, you had the experience 343 wanted to give you.

I think your "Forge Classic" and "Forge Prime" idea is really good. But personally, I think it would be better, more accessible and easier to make if it was just two control setups instead of two different Forge Modes. So: -Have players choose a control scheme (Prime or Classic) when they load up their first game of Forge. -Then inform them that the control scheme can be changed at any time from the pause menu. -So now, every Forger still has the same amount of options, but Classic Forgers maybe have to go through more menus to access the more complicated stuff. It's less convenient than the Prime control scheme, but it's simpler to use and less overwhelming to utilise. I think something like this - but far more refined - would be better for everybody. And far simpler for 343 to dedicate time and money into producing since all they'd really need to do is recreate Halo Reach/4's Forge control scheme and design some more menus instead of producing teo different Forge modes with different restrictions. Just me spitballing though. What do you think of this idea, LateNightGaming?

i think theres a certain appeal behind the idea of "ok what could i create out of this mountain here? how can i connect it to this tunnel?etc." while halo 5 forge is absolutely brilliant(!!) the canvases are, in comparision, rather flat. or skybox. i think (like you mentioned)sometimes being limited pushes creativity more than ABSOLUTE freedom. not always! but i guess that could be a reason. still love 343 works tho in terms of forge

There's also the time aspect to consider. With forge world, so many varied map features are pre-completed that you can slap together an extremely well designed forge map in just a few sittings, if you build off of what's already there. With the more complex forges from halo 4 and halo 5, the timesink required to build something functional and impressive looking is just unfun. Why would i spend several weeks making a map in halo 5 when I can make the same quality of map in reach in just a few days, utilising the map features such as the island, the canyon, the hangar, or various other useful locations. These impressive forges with more open and barren map designs have really killed off the short-term projects that I enjoy so much.

Saying that person is stupid doesn't fix a system that while it works for most still turns away alot of others who just don't have the time to learn how to master a control scheme

Eldewritos forge felt like a nice progression of the classic forge, I'm hoping when mcc hits pc we'll be able to mod custom textures into h2a forge.

So many memories in Forge World. I can remember a special moment I had with every crack, nook, and cranny of that map. I loved learning how to climb it's mountains; Alaska and Montana in the canyon, and the steep one on the beach we called Ranger. I couldn't be more excited for the porting of Reach to PC, and I can't wait to make even more memories on that legendary map.

I feel like a good bit of it is also the memories. I recently went back into my file share and found an old map I made with a few friends many years ago. Seeing it again just filled me with so much nostalgia. Nothing can replace Reach and what Forge World was for me. Forge World will forever be the best forge map to me because of all the memories and the impact it made on me as a kid.

I love how advanced forge has become but I definitely prefer halo Reach's Forge. The map is iconic and it was just fun to fly around in and be sandboxers. I love your idea for prime and classic but it could even be as simple as picking a control scheme for forge specifically.

A proper forge tutorial would be nice. Have it split into little lessons that each teach you how to use a specific tool. I recently started playing around with RPGMaker and that has a short tutorial that just walks you through the menus and the basics of how to get started building a game and I think forge would really benefit from including something similar.

Dead Cassette Well i’m sorry that you’re burdened with such superior intellect. For the rest of us plebs a tutorial that walks you through the basics of Forge would be a nice way to make it more accessible. Have you ever considered that there is a wider player base with different skill levels than just yours? If you don’t need the tutorial then don’t use it, but for people that find the thousands of options and quite frankly shitty menus and UI in Forge a bit overwhelming they can use the tutorial to break down that barrier and get into the mode. I’m really not sure how that is in any way a negative thing.

I was a Sandboxer lmao, never had the patience to make a great map. My friend and I would purposely make our own makeshift bases from scratch, and assault each other whenever we felt like it It was dumb, but fun.

I can’t wait for the MCC to be on PC so the community will have all the H2A-4 maps to play and Forge on. Plus the Halo Online weapons, vehicles, sandbox items and maps.

I liked that everyone could use forge world. When I was new to forging, I could sit on one corner of the world and make a little fun sandbox for myself while my friend did some complex game mode, and when I got more experienced, the roles were reversed with my friends who were less acquainted with map creation. The classic maps are the ones where everyone can have fun together without inhibiting one another, all at the same time

A massive thing that made Halo 5's forge less attractive was the inability to utilize large diverse sets of spaces within the same map. This was either because they were not present, or the sandbox was too limited to let it happen. For example: the Falcon which encouraged teamworking in btb settings and could be used as a transport vehicle for players in addition to being a fighting vehicle. H5 did have the Wasp, the Banshee. and the Phaeton, which were all single seater vehicles. This killed the opportunity for complex interactions and risky drop-ins which Halo Reach and Halo 3 did so well. I'm a low-end cartographer. As cool as Halo 5's forge is, I abso-fucking-lutely HATE its controls. I wanted to take advantage of all the new features, but I still struggle to move myself and my object as easily & simple as I used to. "A" is no longer select/deselect. It's now Rb & Lb. The bumbers are no longer bound to your altitude, it's now A & B. And I couldn't navigate through the menu as well as I did in Reach. I wish we could customize our forge coltrol setup so we can each forge as comfortably as possible. I made numerous awesome forge maps in Eldewrito, and quickly as well, simply because the controls were...... well simple. Edge is an awesome map because of how vast its empty area is, and because the controls are easy to use, it allows low-end cartographers like myself to experiment & practice to create maps a high-end cartographer would make. For example; I'm currently about half way through my remake of a Halo 2 map, but I wouldn't have been able to begin making it if the forge controls were as complex as Halo 5's.

Idea: Revert Forge to Reach-era Remove Halo 5 forge and replace it with an actual SDK (i.e. modding tools, including a map editor, like how valve provides the Hammer editor in their games).

It would probably work best if it was a menu option under controls to switch forge controls between “classic” and “advanced” with classic also having special changes like defaulting physics to normal instead of phased and removing the advanced spawnables like script brains, switches, buttons, etc.

I had a really strange dream the other night. I was watching the Halo Infinite showcase at E3 and someone came up to talk about Forge and gave a live demonstration of the Forge World 2.0 map. He spawned in the canyon and began to fly over the rocky walls, over familiar landmasses, like the island, collesium, etc and he just kept on flying forward; showing how boundless the map was. And the longer he kept going, the louder the audience cheered.

Many editing programs have a basic and advanced mode you can switch between at any time. Locking these two modes behind separate menus would be just as bad. I can deal with the new controls for a minute at a time as I setup something that can only be done in advanced mode, but if I have to back out completely and load up my map in a totally different game mode, that would really try my patience. They should even be compatible with each other, so you could have one player in basic that places the blocks, and one in advanced that sets up the game mode requirements and all that complicated stuff

I remember my best friend and his brother and i would spend hours playing on forge world. He would use that giant grid piece and chase us around the map, scooping us onto it and flinging us thousands of feet up. Trapping us against a wall and crushing us. So much hours goofing off on that map. What a time.

I’ve been saying this exact think for so long! I even posted it on the Halo forums and some people thought I was crazy. But who would it hurt?? When I went to halo 5 forge, the learning curve for the controls were super steep and I just wanted to go in and goof around. I really hope 343 makes a classic mode for forge!

I disagree with the separation of a forge prime and forge classic. I understand the confusion with h5's forge pallet. I'm an engineer student and the way I think of it is you must simplify the user experience while increasing the options to the player in the process. I'd say simplify the menus down while expanding options. Simplify scripting while increasing options and abilities and so on. You don't need a separate mode you just need the experience to be easy to do in the first place and have a large depth to the features for experienced users.

@The Four Horsemen I agree a tutorial would be good. Like a beginner level showing how to do basic things like moving and spawning blocks. An advanced one for changing map and object settings and such. And a expert showing scripting and spawning and more complex things.

One, if I may, that perhaps would be worth considering is the fact too that Forge World's map design is to take you on a journey. You will always start from the highest point seeing out into the map and the vista. You travel along it, exploring every nook and cranny going one of many ways through the map, and the coming back around taking a whole new route of discovery to see the things you missed. It's a trail that, like an airsoft map, is a series of different segments of unique spaces that aren't in some open space, but rather seamlessly integrated into one another. That's a style not yet replicated, and I think doing something like that which flows better will go a long way to make players happy.

That Forge Classic/Forge Prime thing is actually the _exact_ solution to this issue used in Trackmania and Shootmania. It works pretty well!

I grew up on Halo and did an absurd amount of forging, starting with making 'military bases' on Halo 3's Sandtrap, to close-quarters PVP slayer maps in Foundry, to pretty much anything imaginable on Sandbox when it rolled around. I did even more of that in Reach on Forge world, it would take forever to load up the list in the menu since there was easily over a hundred maps I had saved at any given time. Halo 4 I wasn't a huge fan of the change in art style, but definitely had some unique and welcome features, and kept things relatively straightforward to use. Halo 5 I played the least in, for all the hundreds of hours i spent forging in the others, I put hardly any in there. Some of the yet more new features were nice and all, but the controls just felt so clunky, it wasn't a question of it being overwhelming, but that it took forever to get anything done because of how much you had to navigate through to select what you wanted. The textures of the objects also felt bland and simple compared to what was available in the earlier forges, You just couldn't make something that felt like it could normally be a part of the map. The further degradation of the Halo art style and the awful story didn't help either. Hopefully Infinite continues the inclusion of Forge, makes the controls more user friendly, and brings back the level of detail we saw from the Bungie era. Disclaimer: I don't know how much better or more intuitive Halo 5's forge got in the months following release, but it's kinda a moot point since the massive majority of the community were long gone after any such features were added. A big reason of what makes the earlier forge's like Reach 'special' is that they were great and easy to work with right off the bat, allowing the forge community, and by extension the custom games community and the player numbers overall remain as strong as they did for so much longer then H5.

now i feel like crying because my brother me and my friend had this fun “city” map (more of a fustercluck) and we would sometimes we would add a new section, like a restricted section often bloodgultch, and there would be covenant vehicles being researched. there would be security who kill any and all intruders.civilians no rebels no explores would break in to the restricted zone and find vehicles from the great unknown and try to bring them to who knows who or where. we never had a set plan we just made it up as we went and i miss that

As a forger myself, I personally think the halo 5 forge is the best especially with the script and “prefab” object groups allowing you to place buildings, vehicles and props in your maps not to mention the ability to play online with random people for forge wars but that’s just my opinion

I remember back in reach and even h4 before i even had live i would spend entire days just forging but when h5 came out i was just overwhelmd and stopped forging completly so i agree 100 procent with this video

I do miss forge world myself and did feel overwhelmed by the controls of H5 Forge. I think a Basic and Advanced mode of forge for Halo Infinite would definitely be sick! -GS

I think an elegant solution, is to maybe make layers of the forge, you start the forge, being your creation, save the basic structure, move to another phase (adding spawn points, weapons, etc), then you can build go to deeper customization like changing the entire map shape like in 5, then you save, do a run through, then get the options "complete or refine" and you start the process over from the saved stages of the map, that way if you decide you don't want to continue to refine in each stage you can just save through the stages of refinement you're not comfortable with. That way everyone is satisfied, people who like intense map editing and people who just wanna build small maps, and then you can have a freestyle mode for the "sandboxers"

Forge world in reach was so good because it had what nothing else had. Variety. You could build in a massive hanger, you could build on a fantastic island. You had beaches to build on, and you even had classic blood gulch to build in. You could build in any of those, or all of those if you wanted. My favorite custom map I did with my cousins was a space ship battle over blood gulch. Here were the rules: Each team gets one ship. Each ship must have one rocket hog, and one tank. the vehicles must be placed in a way that they cannot be moved, and only used as stationary turrets. The Tank is the ship's main cannon. The rocket hog is the anti-air, but can also be used to attack the other ships. Each ship had to be far enough away, that you could not see the location of the turrets due to render distance, but could see the ships themselves. Therefore the fights were a bit of a guessing game of trying to hit the turrets, which were both blocked partially by armor plating to make them hard to hit, without making it impossible for them to shoot/get hit. In order to win, you had to destroy the ships core, or kill the entire team, no respawns. The core was a small stack of fusion coils, you could hit them with the main cannon, but it was very hard to hit as there would be a small hole to shoot though, which was difficult from a distance, especially when having to worry about their main cannon, and their aircraft. Another way to hit the core was to board the ship directly. Each ship had two banshees as the main fighters, and one falcon as the dropship. No vehicle respawns for the aircraft or the ship's guns. It was good times getting others to play with us and having an all out spaceship war.

My thing with Halo 5 forge was the controls. If I had the option for classic controls it'll help me get into forge. Familiarize myself with the mode and options. Then have the option to switch to optimal controls when I want to take forging to the next level. Just like I did with multiplayer. I used to play default but once I switched to bumper jumper I can never go back

Halo 5 has the best Forge maps I have played on, its especially obvious in matchmaking were it seems 90% of games take place on Forge maps and not pre-made maps. But I have never been able to dive into it like I did in Reach or Halo 4. The UI change did make it a bit harder to just Sandbox and low level map make in. I have been tempted to get Windows 10 Forge since I feel the new UI would just flow better on PC, but I just never have done it since I really don't want to invest the time into it. But as far as sandboxing goes... lots of teenage memories of being at my friend's house on split screen in Reach running around the island in Forge World with Gravity set as low as possible and jump height as high as possible with a myriad of random guns lying around for us to shoot at. It is honestly some of the best Halo memories I have.

I dunno what you mean, LGM, I do still *just go back to Halo Reach* because sometimes i need that seamless forge/player transition; specifically being able to manually fling myself from maximum speed monitor mode to player mode for a high-impact comedy ragdoll suicide. Also the Firefight is the best. I have spent so much time killing aliens in fun and creative ways in that mode.

I've made soooo many maps in Halo: Reach and Halo 3 but in Halo 5 I've always just been irritated by how complicated every action is, like even moving as a monitor and moving objects, I wish there was something like you're proposing.

I think what made Forge world so good, particular to those lower skill forgers, was how it was 'blank' but also had things you could build one, you would build your content around the terrain, and with the different landscapes on a single map, you had a lot of options, maybe you make an invasion map where the Elites fly in on banshees to attack the island, or its an infection map where the humans have to cross the blood gulch canyon, the newer forge is clearly superior for making maps from the ground up, but forge world gave anyone a good foundation to build things. Also something I kind of miss from Halo 3 forge, is the 'junk' items, barrels, movable crates, I feel like they add more character to maps, and make the spaces look more lived.

I have been a long term halo player and i love building my own maps, taking a note from this video i would consider myself a low end cartographer and i can see that halo 5's forge is amazing but i propose a different solution. Instead of making two separate modes have some category changes, for example when you go into the structures in halo reach's forge mode you have lots of pre made buildings and structures and when you go into building options in halo 5 there is just blocks and such but why not mix the two together with a structures tab that has, a pre-made tab that is lots of the classic buildings that we placed all over the place with bridges and decorations and a building blocks tab that has all of the basics that can give way to many great creations. I am just spitballing here but i love your channel and I am very optimistic for halo infinte;s release and hopefully some people can bounce some ideas off of this comment

While I agree that Halo 5s' forge is the best, I love how Halo 4 had auto-turrets, effectively giving you enemies to fight while you forge! True, you could script enemies into your mapin Halo 5 but, it was too complicated and confusing for me to actually enjoy. I want to be able to spawn it some hunters, grunts and, elites to invade my forging project, forcing me to spawn in let's say flood, to defend me while I work. And while this is happening, UNSC forces are taking Pelicans to invade a Forerunner base currently being built by the AI forge moniter using pre-existing code to build bases programmed into it's memory by 343 to make maps less lonely and more enjoyable for those playing alone. Now, I doubt all of this would or could, happen but, I would very much love some of this in Infinite. Maybe not base-building AI but still npcs' you could craft armies out of by assigning their team color. You would still need to build their base but still, imagine the control of Halo 5s' forge combined with the large open space of a map in a VERY similar vein to Forge World *with* forgeable enemies. Even by yourself, the opportunity for endless fun is well, endless!

I personally never played forge but when I loaded into the world with my sister, she and I were in awe of how massive the map was. But she preferred the other maps with actual buildings to be honest haha.

I too fucking love forge world. In the old days, I would get 7 others and we would forge and fight afterwards, “forge wars”. I even had a set of rules. I still love making cool maps to do battle on, though. I guess I am a multiclass. Also, you don’t need to limit the items too much for “Forge Classic”. Anyway, good video.

that you can change the texture of the objects, that everything seems more realistic and less metallic. for example being able to choose halo 3 and halo 2 anniversary textures in the objects. And that you add wildlife to the maps and effects of falling leaves.

Cartographers or sandboxrs... well I don't fit in quite well in either. What I loved about forge world was that I could build Large warzones and integrate prebuilt structures into it. I like to make things that looked cool, but also was very fun for friends to play on. " *Noted I stayed far away from Halo 5 due to bad feelings coming out of Halo 4* " It was just either looked to empty or it's build limits seemed to restricting. If I ran into a build limit problems on reach there was a work around to break them or go past barriers that the game sets. Even if you couldn't go to the places I built just seeing more in the background made the map seemed more grandiose.

As a sandboxer, i absolutely loved the older forges. while i love halo 5's forge as well, as the maps are great and ive logged more time on customs browser than any other game mode (got that timmy helmet), i havent touched forge personally since the first week of having the game because i can spawn shit but dont even know how to turn them. i do hope they add the option to play the original forge again in Infinite so more people than ever can participate in the forging community.

I love your idea because I do feel really overwhelmed with the better Halo 5 Forge, which I will eventually take time to learn one day, but in the meantime i'll just stick to the classic forges. 343 use this idea of Forge (Prime) and Forge (Classic)! Love the video keep up the great content! :)

As a person who's a low end cartographer and a big sandboxer, I can safely say the flaws with Halo 4's Forge Island was exacerbated in 5, where I felt I couldn't really build things because I was unfamiliar with the expertise required to truly harness the excellence of 5's forge mode. Hence, Reach's forge mode, which was more accessable for me still holds the title of best forge mode. Plus I think having the variety of weather conditions, topography and space put into one map in 5 would have benefited the mode greatly instead of chopping it up into several maps.

Halo Infinite forge needs more vehicle's like scarabs and mammoths. The forge also needs a way were people can spawn in all the enemies and allies they want. It would be really fun seeing a war you created.

6:48 - I was a lower end -> higher end cartographer in halo 3 -> halo 4. Halo 5 KILLED forge for me, because I HATED the control scheme and missed the intuitive controls that enabled EASY iteration between playing and editing. I honestly loved halo reach, because it was the best of both worlds. I could easily experiment, then use FINER controls when i wanted to refine my map after laying down the basic zoning, placements, and flow/sight lines. Halo 3,4,reach forge was SEAMLESS for their control scheme (4 nearly killed my forge wants because of the 9 second lighting loader every time you wanted to jump into the map).

He has a very valid point though. Having intuitive controls is important for the younger audience that will undoubtedly play this game. I know it took me a while to get used to Reach Forge after Halo 3, and so on.. there’s nothing wrong with having best of both worlds, and there’s no reason for you to be an asshole about it. So shut up please. :D

@@theortheo2401 Yes, because we should strive for confusing controls for something that CAN be easy. If that's all you're going to add to the conversation, then please just keep scrolling. Accessibility via intuitive controls should be strived for in software. Otherwise, we would still be using UI on smartphones like windowsPhone variants.

@@vikaviking1823 Yeah, intuitive controls are HUGE for adoption rates. They are some of this BIGGEST factors if people use software, be it games, sites, enterprise management, etc. I really want as many people having a SLOW learning rate for stuff, so it's easy to explore and grow over time, rather than needing to front-load all of that. This is why I use this old program called "milkshape3d" when I want simple operations on 3d, vs using blender3d for complex things. Blender3d is definitely not very easy to grasp.

@@1337GameDev first of all, I can say whatever I want as long as I don't insult anybody (and seriously if you feel attacked because some random like me told someone to git gud, you need to ask yourself questions), and secondo, if you want to be able to do advanced things, you gotta learn. Intuitive controls are good, but limiting. Here, you got a huge potential thanks to those controls. And yeah, sure as it's told in the video, you could have two modes to adapt to differents levels. It's any thing really, for exemple, MS Paint sure is easy to use, but don't expect to pull off some Photoshop level shit out of it. That's only what I meant by fucking around saying "git gud". Relax you're on the internet mate. Don't take yourself or others too seriously.

I think what killed Halo 5's forge for me was that you needed live gold to play it in the first place. As a person who hates online subscriptions, I never tried. That bridge was blown apart by corporate greed, and it led me to Reach MCC forge. And I loved it.

I think my biggest problem with Halo 5's maps was just how low their max height was. You could barely use banshees and the other flying vehicles without being uncomfortably low to the ground. In Forge World the max height was high enough that you genuinely felt free to fly when you left the hanger.

H2A has a pretty good balance between the simplicity of Reach's Forge and the complexity of 5's Forge, with simple objects and buildings combined with the option for advanced scripting that can make some really cool stuff. I preordered MCC when we got an Xbox One, and while the multiplayer was disappointing, the forge in H2A was perfect for my 12 year-old brother to figure out how to make advanced maps with moving parts such as elevators due to the scripting potential. Hopefully MCC PC will bring about some great content for MCC's forge community, and hopefully Infinite will have your idea of having the option between more simplistic versus more advanced forge options. And hopefully they bring back Forge World, especially for the former. Forge World in H5 wouldn't work due to how flexible the terrain is, it would be far too much for a console to handle. But the next Xbox, with it's supposed Ryzen processor and raytracing-capable GPU, might be able to handle something like that.

I like halo reaches forge. I feel like they need to make the forge menus simple like they were and bring back the old theater control scheme and then add the new stuff on top of it. I like halo 5s forgot and know how to use it after practice and mermorization but it is way too confusing for new players. They just need to make the controls and layout simple like the way they were but still have the precision editing from halo 5
