In this video I go over why foundation vents don't work like they used to. Whether you have an old house or are building a new house, knowledge about foundation vents could be vital to your home. Sealed encapsulated crawl spaces are your best option. One with a dehumidifier and sump pump.

Yes and those commercial dehumidifiers are 1,700 bucks. Im going to go with fans in the vents. One blowing out and one blowing in.

Looking to for options to protect my 1950s Crawlspace.. I live in Deep South though. I just spent 30k remodeling a bathroom that just after putting up walls found had dry rot... 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️ Makes me super nervous either way due to our high humidity Most of the contractors told me to cover the soil with some particular material and open the vents up to let it breathe.. I know our air is almost always humid... Ranch style home with less than 18 inches of clearance in a lot of spots.. I'm not sure what to do.... enclose and put a dehumidifier??? They had to leave some of the minor dryrot boards unfortunately and pretreated with a borate solution. Wasn't happy it didn't all come out but it took 9 months on a project that if had noticed to start before walls went in would have been simple. STILL pissed at plumbers cause they didn't say anything. I found it myself when I felt a sag I crawled under. It is super dirty, I have had 2 back surgeries, and it is in the furthest spot from my access in a 3500 ft house.. or I would have been under first

Good video! I am almost done with my crawl space encapsulation but have one question I haven’t been able to find I a clear answer to. I am preparing to install my vent fan but can’t figure out if I should leave one vent to the outside on the other side of the crawl space open, or cut a new hole in the floor and install a blank register. I live in Washington State so humidity typically really low and I just left a vent from the hvac open to heat the crawl space instead of installing a dehumidifier. Cheers!

Thank you! In that case, I would close up all vents except the one you are putting the fan in. It will pull air from the house and wherever it can and cycle new air in the space. Not sure how prominent radon is in your area, but I would be sure to test for it in intervals once you are done just to be sure you’re not getting any soil gas build up once you seal up your crawl space.

@@thecrawlspaceace4696 Saweeet! Thanks for the reply, that’s what I’m gonna do then. Radon isn’t bad in our area but it’s recommended to monitor it. I’ve got about a 1 year average on its and it’s super low. I’ve seriously been sitting at like 95% completion trying to figure out what the right/reasonable decision to make here is for about a year. This is probably overkill but I was trying to find a product like plastidip or a liquid rubber I could paint over the tape on my seems to make it more air tight. Is that crazy? I spent 14 years in aerospace so I unintentionally tend to go overkill on my diy stuff. Like I’ll sweat balls over 1/16th of an inch 🤣

I just stumbled upon this and wanted to point out that, for starters, the age of the home has absolutely zero to do with airflow in the crawl space and how vents work. Second, the airflow is never, ever lateral in a crawl space. It's always in and up via the stack effect. More importantly you should probably spend a lot of time understanding the physics behind how air moves through a home because every single thing you're stating is plain wrong. And yes, I do this shit for a living, I have studied and understand the science and none of this is correct. I appreciate what you are trying to do here but maybe spend some time studying this and the relevant building codes.

I would be more than happy to have a civil conversation on this topic. Always looking to better my knowledge in everything we do and I’m not above admitting if I’m wrong. If this is something you would be willing to do then just send me an email and we can chat! Now if your only goal is to stroke your own ego and aren’t open to other people’s opinion, then I would just say move on. Up to you, but I’d be happy to have the conversation.

@@thecrawlspaceace4696 So, for whatever reason my reply never posted! Sorry if I came off a bit angry, it wasn't meant to be. I just see so many crawl space videos lacking the actual information the viewers need to make an informed decision. I'd be happy to have a discussion outside of this forum so let me know what email address is suitable and we can go from there.
