I'm a french from the Caribbean islands. This ability to vote in french elections created a scandal in 2007. We have 6 hours of time difference. So the new french president (Sarkozy) had been announced in the media but people were still voting in the overseas departments. It's like our vote never mattered. Since this incident, the overseas departments are allowed to vote 1 day before France and people can see the scores of the overseas even before the election begins in France.

Something worth mentioning : Guadeloupe, Martinique, La Réunion, French Guiana and Mayotte are French overseas regions/departments (ruled by the president), while the other are French overseas collectivities (basically they are somewhat independant, can be governed by local monarchs), plus New Caledonia having it's own status. No matter which territory you're born in, you're automatically a French citizen. All these territories decided through voting to stay French. Je suis Français, et fier de l'être.

As a French from one of those islands, I love this video because they understand the concept of a stellar nation and that Metropolitan France isn't France anymore. As someone who grew up being told "but it's not really France" I lost patience. This were the video isn't really right tho... Each of the part of France mentioned in the video had a referendum were the population had to vote for either independence or being fully integrated in France. It started with the war of Algeria, France decided to put a stop to the colonies on its own after the bad Algerian experience, and simply asked for the inhabitants of those places what they wanted. Saying it's not part of France is insulting the words and decisions of the people of France... Technically Islands like Réunion or Guadeloupe are more French than Hawaii is American. It's a total legislative and administrative fusion. There's no discerning it from metropolitan France as a rule but as an exception. Laws making an exception must be formulated, in the absence of said laws, the normal code applies...and none of the territories have their own set of laws. All those territories are 100% part of Europe too, and a European citizen doesn't even need a passport to travel there - just an ID card or a driving licence will suffice.

I think it didn't start with Algeria but with the First Indochina War from 1945 to 1954 (Now Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam), and French India (Pondichéry, Karikal, Yanam and Mahé). The inability for France to keep control of Indochina fuelled Algeria's will for independence right after.

@@retropaganda8442 Algeria is literally what triggered the referendum which led to the end of the French colonial empire. What you mention is just one of the low point of the French empire. It's not even the first, before Indochine war (Vietnam), Haïti was the first to revolt successfully against France. And before Haiti, colonies passed from a country to another. There's dozens of low points for the colonial empire, but the one that broke the camel back was Algeria.

Thank you so much. Despite your obvious insulting tone toward me and my country, i think this is an actual feel good video for any frenchman. The general consensus here is that France is decaying and slowly disappearing . You greatly corrected that idea with very specific facts and great maps. YES the sun never sets on French lands, YES we have control and presence on every oceans of the globe, YES we are conducting projects as great as Space exploration or nuclear power. YES we are a major political and military actor of the curent century ! Oh man i wish we could show this video to all the depressive "France is Decaying" ideologists around. Love from France.

They have their own international french legion army, which officially french is not legally responsebile for their actions (if i remember correctly. So that gives a lot of room for humanrightsabuses). Everyone knows who actually controls them. It is like CIA. all know they are usa agency. But officially the usa government are not legally responsebile for their actions. And france have long history of inserting and controlling puppet regimeleaders. Or how about the illegal wars in the middle east. Where france took part in terrorizing locals. So YES you should be concerned if you live close to them. Are they the worse? Very unlikely. A few years ago, a question about the list of the countries that share a common border with France was on the citizenship test (a test for someone on a working visa for a long time wanting to acquire the citizenship). You had to say if such or such country had a common border with France. Well, Netherlands was on the list of countries. And the expected answer, was, of course, "not bordering France".
@zaeroses1096
@zaeroses1096 8 ай бұрын
I would be pissed about that if I were French... if not for the fact that every citizenship test I have seen has had far, far worse questions. I have New Zealand citizenship, gained when I was born in New Zealand and so no questions were answered, and British citizenship, gained after living in Wales for 5 years at age 12, at which age you don't take any citizenship test. But I saw examples from the citizenship test from friends at university, and, well, we disagreed with almost every question we saw - though the intended answers were obvious. Basically, you say something roughly along the lines of "the UK is the bestest ever country ever with no flaws and is run so well and is a perfect utopia completely free from discrimination where everyone is treated equally by the government", and probably, though I don't remember if this was included, something about pledging allegiance to the British royal family and saying how good they are. I still can't believe that thinking it's disgusting to pledge allegiance to what I would describe as a bunch of rich entitled wankers is an unpopular opinion... though drilling American kids to pledge allegiance to the flag every day at school certainly seems worse to me than the much, much, much less common pledging allegiance to anything in the UK.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but the Schengen agreement only applies to countries, not overseas territories or some European islands, like the ones in the Baltic sea, if i'm not mistaken. The agreement is full of exceptions like this one, for a few other European countries. You can travel to those locations for holidays, with only an ID, if you are a European citizen, but you'll need a work permit if you plan on staying.

@@Ysundeneth You obviously don't know what is Schengen... Schengen membership and European Union membership are 2 different things. Schengen is about control, which means there are no border control between member states... you can freely go from Spain to France to Germany to Poland without being checked at the border and if you are checked you don't need a visa or passport (as long as you are from a country member of Schengen). That's what Schengen is. And if you are for exemple an American tourist visiting Germany for exemple with a 3 months VISA, you can freely move to France or Italy or any other Schengen member state and stay there as long as your 3 months VISA allows it, you're not forced to stay in Germany. However you can't take a flight from Germany to French Guiana with a VISA for Germany, but you can freely take a train from Munich to Paris to visit France. Nothing to do with European citizenship which means you can freely live and stay and work in any other EU member state with just your ID. Ireland is part of the EU but not part of Schengen which means there are border controls even from other EU member states YET any European citizen can freely move to Ireland and live there. Switzerland is part of Schengen which means you can freely cross Switzerland if you want to go from France to Italy for exemple without VISA or Passport (as long as you are from a country member of Schengen), but it's not part of the EU which means a French or an Italian can freely cross Swtizerland but can't live and stay there with their European citizenship. French Guiana is fully part of France which means any European citizen (so any Dutch) can move and live there as if he was French, however it's not part of Schengen which means there are border controls.

Fun fact : In France, elections take part on sunday. But the overseas territories (except Reunion and Mayotte) always vote one day before mainland France. French Polynesia and New caledonia because they are already on sunday when it's saturday in mainland France. Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, the West Indies islands and French Guyana who vote on saturday because, if they voted on sunday, they would be still voting during the traditional announcement of the results of the elections at 20h mainland time.

I think every members of french overseas territory aren't part of the European Union. It really is case by case, and at least half of French oversea territories have a unique statute and legislation
@frjedi9081
@frjedi9081 Жыл бұрын
No, it’s really the case. France is a democratic republic of citizens based on the French Constitution. All citizens are equal in right. As there is no more « oversea’s territories or colonies » but only french « départements », all the areas of France in the world are fully France with French citizens. France and all its citizens are members of the EU… and so on! That’s a fact and a very important part of the french way of thinking « law and citizenship » « Déclaration des Droits de l’Homme et du Citoyen » (Human and citizen rights) that made some differences with the British Empire and much more with US. Every citizen can vote, including for the national poles (President, National chambers) wherever he lives in the World including what you call overseas territories. In the same way, black or Asian french (for example) were fully part of the army while the two world wars. Many US peoples came to join the french army because they were not welcome in the US one and USAF. Pilots could be trained and could fight in the french Air Force (in mixed « colors » units), and so on… Foreign citizens can vote for local elections! France is not perfect, of course not, but the legal basis and the Constitution are probably of the best in the world. Yes, some overseas regions have special statutes (not legislation) but it cannot be less than the general national statute and have to match with EU laws. No there is no other kind of « territories » in the French Republic.
@Harold046
@Harold046 Жыл бұрын
@@frjedi9081 He was actually right. Things are a bit more complicated than what you claim : not all the french oversea territories are « départements », and not all of those territories are actually considered part of the European Union. One example of that is Saint Pierre et Miquelon, which is excluded from both the EU and the Schengen treaty... although as the people living there are french citizen, they are considered citizen of the European Union and participate in european elections. Some territories do have special statutes *and* legislation, and the requirements to match EU laws can be more or less strict. This is inevitable, especially for the french oversea territories, which simply cannot realistically follow the same rulings as the rest of the country, while living in a completely different environment, and trading with completely different partners. Having a united legislation is not something you should thrive for no matter what: on the opposite, being flexible is the best decision a government can take to properly manage such a disparate set of lands.

Yep, the maneuver thing is the main reason you want to launch near equator. Plus the fact that you can choose prety much any orbital plane for your satellite. The added spinning speed, adds up one or two hundred m/s, out of roughly 7000m/s you need. It doesn't make that big of a difference.

It's a pity that all the videos about the French overseas territories never mention the people (natives, French, immigrants from other continents etc.) who live there. For example, the case of Reunion Island is quite exceptional. An island where 3 religions cohabit a place with a wide range of ethnic groups (French, "Creole", Chinese, Indian...) or even Guiana. Indeed, there is an important economic aspect (not so much important since France doesn't really exploit its EEZ except for fishing), if France keeps these territories it is not really for an imperialist reason, it is just that they became a part of France as much from an economic point of view as a cultural one. There are many French people from overseas who come to metropolitan France or French people from the Hexagone who have family or friends in these territories

@@alost4076 from UNCLOS (United Nations convention on the laws of the seas) France have to extract the oil or let the neighbouring nations do so. However it is within France’s EEZ so France could make an environmental claim, especially since Reunion and Mayotte are dependant on fishing for the local economy. Reunion and Mayotte might be useless not, but in 2046 when the Antarctic treaty is up for review it can be a very useful EU port for stopovers when going to Antartica. French sovereignty over the islands are actually in the best interest of France.
