Reason why I gave up on mainstream PC gaming after the early 2010s - it's insulting to think I should pay full price for an empty box with a BS download code in it. Even worse with Hitman in 2016 when they released online episodically instead of the promised full disc version. Reason why I switched back to console recently (PS5 disc) and purchase only full games.

Without idea of "public domain" people will always be forced to pirate here and there while publisher will try to push us from those "dusty old games" to new, with agenda and micro transactions. And in the end they gonna win. So many games now are staying in "platfrom prison", i dont want to imagine what gonna happen when there be no game copy on client side to begin with.

This debate ties more with how other digital products are shifting from "goods" to "services". Before you could own microsoft office, now you have to pay a yearly fee. And it gets more and more exploitatice as games sometimes are made to consume your time to avoid refunds and stimulate microtransactions (looking at you GTA:Online)

I was at a Best Buy in Milpitas CA. And I could see this switch already in effect, there were 4 or 5 physical copies for Xbox there and COD Vanguard was one of them.

I don't understand this really I played on PC for a very long time and I've never needed to own a physical copy of a game and for older games I don't buy it I just pirate You games aren't gonna be lost for ever piracy exist and will forever exist

im pretty much all digital now physical is nice for the novely especially with collectors editions but besides that its just kind of anoying especially as a switch player as the cases just waste a ton of space compared to the size of the chip so you just have a bunch of oversized empty cases lying around
