Y'all old people let them give Gen Z some shine. Not once did he say they created humor. The title says "Why." Y'all are too old to be so petty.

Once again GENERATION X has been erased and by PBS no less. The channel that we spent most of our childhood watching! Incredible. I am literally stunned. ☹️😢 And Gen X are the parents of Gen Z … smh 🤦🏻♀️

Before the Greatest Generation was the Silent Generation. And between the Boomers and the Millennials... is the Invisible Generation, apparently.
@lisastevens2607 Жыл бұрын
@@brooksliz you would be correct. We are the first gamers, we helped to invent and beta tested the internet, we saw the end of the vinyl record, cassette tape, embraced the CD and MP3, on to the iStuff and embraced it all. Phones were plugged into the wall until they weren’t. Cars needed keys to unlock the doors now a fob in your pocket starts a car. The invisible generation rolled with every punch and handed them our money. Lots of money. Paying all the way for change. Kids these days have it easy.

Generations are frequently inspired by the ones that came before them, but they sometimes don’t realize it. Gen X is known for their biting satire and dark humor focused on many topics, like existential dread. But it’s possible that the Gen Z’ers who also use that form of humor haven’t seen or heard anything from the Gen X era of media, or they don’t recognize it as that. Millennials also use this form of humor, but they usually are more aware of it being inspired by their older sibling generation. As well as their own experiences starting with living as adults for the first time post economic recession, of course, but a lot is still taking a page out of Gen X’s book. So it’s also possible that the people who skip over Gen X attribute this form of humor to Millennials, and don’t think to go back further. These are all just guesses. It might simply be because we are frequently being forgotten as a generation when the topic of generations is brought up.

Using humor to deal with death is not only not new, it is as old as time. In the 80's multiple times accidents and mistakes almost brought about nuclear Armageddon. Much of the excesses of the decade was brought about as a result of this and other things. When the space shuttle Challenger disaster happened, we made jokes. Every time disaster struck we found a reason to laugh. It was how we dealt with the grief and the unspoken fear that we might have been the last generation before the apocalypse. Gallows humor, dark comedy, etcetera is a concept as old as time.

Wow. All this salt for Gen Z. I'm an elder Millennial, and I deeply love and appreciate what Gen Z has done with their perspective and creativity, given the tools they have to communicate and express their experience. I see strong intergenerational ties between Millennials and Gen Z. We will hold hands with Gen Alpha, as they come into their own, as well. Together, we're gonna go hella far. We have a bright future ahead of us cleaning up the mess previous generations left for us.

Holy shit, people. Just because EVERYONE has used humor to deal with death does not make this specific use of humor any less interesting. Never, in the history of humanity, have we had Gen Z before, nor the unique circumstances that unfold in contemporary America. SO! let us appreciate this new way of using humor and maybe learn from it. Also, there is NOTHING profound or observant about stating the obvious, that is, "Everyone (PeOple) hAVe usEd HUmor fOr deatH sINCe tHE BeGGIniNG)... we get it.

Exactly! Everyone might use gallows humor occasionally, but this isn't about *everyone*. This is a nice short overview about why this kind of joking is so common for a generation that is so young. And Gen Z has such a flourish and lack of self-consciousness to it!

in my counrty we are not sure if we are milenials, gen x or gen z - but 90s kids saw SOME shit during their 30 years and only way to cope (healthy way) was humor. While USA-ians have inherited money and houses, we inherited only humor the way it can be in totalitarian country. I'm happy more people talking about death and feel no shame to be vulnerable, bc death is part of life - even if it brings so much pain (in case your people being genocided rn on russian occupied territories it also can bring despair and hate)

Why is everyone from gen x taking this so personal? There weren't tragedies as instantaneously ground shattering like 9/11 or complete uprooting of how the world worked like the world wars or the great depression, or even bringing everything to a halt by being stuck in your house for a year to keep from getting yourself and others who could potentiallydie from getting sick. I get it sucks to be left out, but from a younger person's perspective we simply dont KNOW what to site for earth shattering events that turned everything upside-down for literally everyone where you cant turn your head to avoid seeing the disaster to only either see another one or the same one because theres no running from it. We dont remember it and if the history books dont either, then where are we supposed to get that information from?

Are you serious? Have you heard of the AIDS EPIDEMIC? The war on drugs and the crack epidemic during the Reagan administration. At the same time, the first environmental problems started to appear. The Cold War was still going on. What isn't serious to you? Or only what you live is relevant? Or, actually the truth, you don't know what you're talking about, because you don't know what happened more than 30 years ago.

Oh lordy. Calm down, boomer. "The Things They Carried, O'Brien plays with the genre of metafiction; he writes using verisimilitude. His use of real place names and inclusion of himself as the protagonist blurs fiction and non-fiction.[3] As part of this effect, O'Brien dedicates The Things They Carried to the fictional men of the "Alpha Company," giving it “the form of a war memoir,” states O’Brien.[4]"
