Hey, thanks for the suggestion! :) i’ll def look into this topic since i’m also a huge fan of the data science/ML world. There are many cyber security startups i’ve seen but many of them have experience in the field and see the gaps and areas that companies need third parties for, i would start with consulting if you’re trying to start a cyber business bc it gives you insight into what companies want in terms of security and how you can make their environment more secure

Hi, I'm not Sandra but I saw this and thought I'd respond. You should know if you want to be on the blue team or the red team. But since you've never been in tech, you want to be sure that your knowledge of computers and networks is great. You can check out the comptia a+ and network+ certs to give you the solid foundation you need; you don't have to take the exams but the knowledge really helps. You want to read for these certs as if you're going to take the exams. Then take the security+, that's a good foundation for cyber professionals.

Also, check out your state department of labor site and career services. The White House initiative included announcements of grants for people who want to work in cybersecurity- you might not need to pay anything for a bootcamp

I'm finishing my diploma in computer systems technology, I just got accepted for a graduate certificate program at Seneca for cybersecurity & threat management, I'm so hyped, my question, do you think a diploma program and a cybersecurity postgrad would land me a good job, would it be equivalent to a CISSP? Is the grad certification program similar to a masters? I think certs like CISSP do well because many recruiters are told to look for that certification while they’re scanning through resumes which helps them get their foot in the door easier. Your degree and grad cert program can definitely make you qualified for a cyber role but just make sure you write your resume in a way that those resume scanning tools they use will pick up on the right keywords!

MIS is more focused towards business analyst roles/analytics roles so if you’re looking to get into cyber-focused jobs (security analyst, pentesting, Info sec consultant, etc) then definitely a BAS in cyber security! MIS is a lot more business focused but can also be good for roles that sit between the security/technical teams and the business side, so both are great majors but can lead to different career paths! I don't have help desk experience but many people Ik do, but i even know people in cyber security w a psychology background since a lot of it is dealing with people hacking, if you're starting from the very beginning, a help desk role might be an easy first job to get your feet wet while you study for a cert or two to get into other cyber security jobs, good luck Felix!

I don’t have a specific brand for laptops but definitely at least 8gb of ram if not 16gb since you may use VMs, i7, ssd. Many entry level cyber roles will hire you with a cyber degree but it’s definitely helpful to have some cyber internship experience and beginner certifications!

Hi Yashika, thanks for your question! I think these are both great options but I think you'll at most need a bachelor's degree for Cyber security entry level roles so i don't think an MBA would be necessary yet, unless you already have experience in cyber security and are looking towards a more senior/management position. I'd stick with the option that is the best financial choice but still has a competitive cyber security program that teaches real skills, good luck with your decision! :)

Hi, I'm currently in the process of college applications. I'm having a struggle deciding between majoring in bio vs cyber security. If I went down the cyber security path, would you reccomend I major in cyber security? Would that set me up for success within the field? Thanks.

I know the question is directed towards her but I just wanted to put in my input in case it helps. It depends what you want to do with that bio degree. I was majoring in astrophysics until recently when my priorities changed. If you're planning on doing research with bio you might not be getting paid as much as your degree is worth. That is why I didnt want to pursue astrophysics even though I've been going to school for it. Its competitive and a bachelor's does not pay as much as I would like, heck my current job pays more. Cybersecurity pays very well. It's a hard choice but if you want a well paying job I would definitely choose Cyber Security. Hope this helped a little

I have a degree in bio and am now looking into cyber security. Only go into bio if you absolutely love the field and are openly either working in the lab or doing grunt work for scientists. Of course, this is just my experience but thought I would add my pov :)

Actually!! If this is for school (which i didnt read at first lol) i’d go the refurbished route, and focus on 8 gb ram and at least i5, that’ll be much better for your budget, the storage is more flexible if you’re in school too since you’ll probably get a laptop from your employer when you graduate! I had a refurbished lenovo thinkpad in college and ik the dell xps is a good choice too, good luck w everything! :)
