As a software engineer for me the feeling of low impact comes from not being all that close to the customer. I worked in retail a lot so you always interact with the customer and it makes you want to give a better exp. I dont really see that as a low level software engineer. I just chew on code most days. But the job is super secure and all the coworkers are great if thats what your into.

I am currently working as a Cyber Seciurity and frankly I am thinking of changing my job to Software Engineering. In my company, when you're a Cyber Sec., you have a lot of different tasks, and the company when it wants to make 100% use of your time so that you don't get 'bored' it assigns tasks to do, even if its really little related to what you are gklowly familiar with. But from my previous experience at Software Eng. I had several projects to take care of and in my "free" time I could learn other things. For me that was much better.

Which one, cybersecurity or software engineering has more jobs available? also which one pays more in average ?
@WithSandra3 жыл бұрын
Definitely depends on the company but in general, software engineering pays more than cyber security! But if you get a clearance (secret/top secret government clearance) you'll def have a lot of job security. Companies usually wont cut their cyber security team since they need them to protect data/applications but software engineering definitely has a lot of jobs available as well. So SWE on average can pay more but cyber may have more job security from our experience!

@@WithSandra Incorrect cybersecurity pays more than software engineering due to the shortage and skills needed in cybersecurity... an average salary for a software engineer goes for 77k/year and cybersecurity would be 85-90k/year

@@ahmadbaker549 you’re talking entry level. Higher level software engineers, especially at management, make more than cyber security specialists
@GTRNights2 жыл бұрын
@@csantiago22 But you will rarely see a SWE in a C-level position. Cybersecurity goes all the way to the C-level with the CISO position, where you can make up to 450k a year, and starting your own cybersecurity consulting business can make you millions, where as the market is so saturated with SWE freelancers people are like "I'll code your entire shoppify store for 5 dollars!!!". You could blindfold me, spin me around 10 times, throw a rock and hit a SWE freelancer. But finding qualified, certified CS SMEs is very difficult. I know of one CS consulting company that charges 125k just for a risk assessment, and another 50k for 40 hours of vCISO. Security is where the money is, especially for the long term and growth/development of your career. There's really no room to go up in SWE.

@WithSandra3 жыл бұрын
For sure, will definitely get something up with data science vs cyber! It’s pretty comparable for salaries in the beginning but the ceiling for SWE is much higher imo because at big tech companies, stock options can be just as much or more than your annual salary and not many cyber security roles have stock options that can match up with those faang companies. So base salary could be equal but stocks can def tip that scale! But ofc every company and sector may be a bit different so i’m sure there are cases where cyber salaries are higher

Those kinds of hours are unheard of in the UK 😂 37.5 is the typical working week here in both public and private sector for BOTH roles. On the flip side though salaries are higher in the US so I guess there’s some justification.

I'm not sure because (I could be wrong) the cost of living in certain areas of the U.S. are a bit higher or the same as in the U.K., such as on the coastline or in big cities in the U.S., where software engineer jobs are most popular and available. I also believe that people in the U.K. or in Europe generally get more days off. Here in the U.S., most people would get 1-2 weeks off at most for the year whereas in Europe I think people could get up to one month off.
