The good times at my local GW finally came to an end within the last year. The location was selected for a reno and, when the dust had settled, it was a soulless husk. New discount store junk and the scraps left over after they shipped the good stuff off for auction. While it’s disappointment to lose a sourcing site, what really hurts is knowing that the place I’d go to clear my head or burn a few hours listening to Christmas music on a snowy day are gone. It was always a relatively sleepy store. The same handful of regulars who were never too bothered about anything. Now it’s literal busloads of people fighting crashing carts in the new needlessly narrow aisles over cheap notebooks and plastic decor that wouldn’t sell anyplace else. They even brought in the corporate suits to observe on opening day. It’s all a bit of a silly thing to be sad over, but I guess that’s what happens when you lose one of those places that feels real.

I miss my Goodwill being great. It was literally 2 miles from my house and a half mile from the post office. Buy stuff take stuff to the house list stuff and repeat. Now there’s nothing. The few that’s left people should appreciate them. Thanks for watching and messaging

I stopped donating to Goodwill. Their prices are not for people who need assistance. Goodwill is trying to make as much money as they can. I started donating to a local thrift store in my area that sells the merchandise for a very low price.

I gave up on Goodwill years ago. I’ve only been reselling for about a year but there prices outpaced other thrifts in my area for some time. I will pop in to the GW bin store every now and then but I find that place depressing. Seeing good items pulled apart by resellers competing over garbage. When they bring out a fresh buggy the shoppers remind me of dogs, lined up behind a line waiting on their master to say Sic’em. I just hang back. There is not one thing in that buggy worth going elbow to elbow for. After a couple of trips there I decided I would never again donate anything to a GW. There is so much waste. I now donate to a lady that runs a small consignment type thrift shop. Her prices are high as a cats back too but she is like me. A squirrel trying to find a nut.
@HelosWorldRailroadReseller10 күн бұрын
I only go to the bins a couple times when it’s cold and no yard sale. You are correct it’s a madhouse. The stuff there isn’t what it used to be either. Thanks for being so loyal

The one I go to... seems to be ok. Sometimes you get the idiot that takes and tears a brand new item open... when the item could have sold for a good profit to next to nothing. However like today spent 90. And ill easily make that back up.
@bennystratton77349 күн бұрын
100% yep i agree but we must do what we must do as resellers to survive how i do it now is i just go to where the crowd is not AND I STILL FIND Items to resell that is how brainless they are at the bins one thing i noticed (i have been going to the bins since 2013ish) within the last few years i noticed less and less "GOOD STUFF" coming out and i saw Cameras and i started to tell others they are NOT watching us because they think we are going to steal things they are are watching us to LEARN what we pick and then they can pick it in the back before it even comes out!! they were using us as learning tools and again little by little over the last few years less and less good stuff has been coming out like i said even with the influx of resellers at the bins i can sell find GOOD STUFF at the bins even after the vultures had there pickings but there is NOT nearly as much good Stuff coming out in the bins and its because they WATCHED and studied us and what we picked so they can pick it in the back when it comes in before it even is sent out in the bins and that GOOD STUFF goes right onto shopgoodwill its fact

I haven't realized goodwill sold so much new cheap stuff, it has to be at least 7 years since i been in one trying to source or maybe close to 10 years maybe, anyways it has been a few years. I agree no matter where you go think if you can turn it into a sourcing opportunity. Nothing like enjoying yourself and see something you can flip for more without really out looking for it on purpose. I live in the country and quite often when we go someplace i will take a different way home to see if i find anything new. I am a scrapper too so sometimes when i get called to pick up a scrap pile someplace a few items might end up on ebay instead.
@steveherr45010 күн бұрын
i drove past as someone was putting an old double snorkel car air cleaner out for the garbage man and asked if i could take it? sure he was cleaning out the garage and sold that car like 30 years ago, making room for a new riding lawn mower that was getting delivered the next day. wife asked for the scrap pile? Nope ebay, sold it for just shy of $300, not bad for garbage picking.

100% we just have to make it work if are a business person and the backs to the wall you will find a way to make it work and sourcing should not be JUST locally need to source MANY different ways this i feel (i have been reseling full time since 98') is HUGE mistake many new resellers are making thinking they can ONLY source Locally In person and that is FURTHEST from the truth but then comes in the work ethic and if your lazy or not many do not want to put the time or effort to source the Internet and many platforms and websites for Inventory they really want it all to be EASY and hardly any work and MAKE THE MOST MONEY for the least amount of work possible sorry those with that mindset will always fail

My local Goodwill isn’t completely over run with the dollar store rejects… 🤔 might be because there is FOUR dollar generals, 1 Dollar Tree and A Family Dollar all in a freaking 5 mile radius! 🤣🤣🤣 on the other hand I can tell they are shipping off “all the good stuff” to whatever central hub. I find lots of goodies because I’ve been taught to thrift since I could pick things up and 40 years later I have a pretty good eye, but it is work!

I read where Goodwill is using AI to check every resell item before it hits the floor for sale - meaning, they'll know if it's something with market value they can sell themselves on the Internet (like ebay!) or for full value on their floor. My neighborhood Goodwill is already doing this. However, a half-mile down the road is a private thrift store - seek them out. Good finds! Goodwill is just becoming another Big Lots.

Love the video. Can’t blame the Goodwill for trying to add things like snacks and also purchase items similar to the bins stores or a Marshall’s. My store already gets donations or purchases from box stores like the dollar tree or dollar store, but few people buy that stuff. I pass the stuff up at bins all the time. They’ll probably make a lot of money on the snacks from all the FT Resellers who hang out there all day!

Probably so. At the bins there’s people that do stay there all day. Used to be that way at the regular store, they even had benches for them but those days are long gone. Thanks for watching and I hope you and your wife are doing well

100% all of that is tax write offs for those other stores and GUESS what all the donations are tax write offs for the rich and wealthy that is why they get so many donations TRUST ME if you could not get tax donation receipts from the GW for your donations THE GW would not exist as we know it to day they would be just like every other mom and pop thrift store. at my GW bins i always pick up "Flea Market" worth items i have done very well off the GW bins over the last 12 years i have been going to them (the thing with the bins is to get as much LIGHT WEIGHT items as you can because it goes by the pound) so if i can fill a huge Reusable bag of items that are "FLEA MARKET" worth and say its $25 but i have 100 items in that bag put them in Dollar bins and even if i have to sell them for .50 im still making a profit a lot of the stuff i get for the flea market is NEW items sun glasses , Card Decks, Hardware (light switch plates) cheap things people will use or need this is just few of many different items i pull from the bins that 99.9% of the clueless walk pass

Lots of truth here. That shot at Goodwill almost looks like the defunct 99 Cent Only stores donated all their leftover stock to Goodwill. There may be some straggler Goodwill locations in podunk towns that haven't been raided by corporate yet but they'll get there. I wander into one about once a year and am always reminded why I stopped going there. Unfortunately, the thrift stores that claim to be for charity very often aren't or it's a very small percentage that benefits a community. We have 2 here that actually donate the majority of the proceeds (sans overhead) and are run by volunteers and they both benefit animals in some fashion (rescue, TNR, etc.) and we have one that helps fund free hospice care. All of those locations have raised prices drastically over the past 2 years so they aren't the bargain they once were but at least they are providing much needed, legit services.

The ones that are more in the metropolitan areas tend to be like yours. They don't even have discounts anymore at some of them. If you go out to the more rural ones, they are like they used to be but there prices are going up all the time. They all I think are a part of networks of stores and some do things differently than others. Our stores locally still use the small stickers instead of the big gaudy ones. FYI, just be careful about putting goodwill in your titles, they do look at what is being said about them and I'm sure they read the comments. We obviously know that most of the reasons why the way they are, is because of youtube. I think goodwill will eventually change their models, it depends on supply and demand. They mostly use their stores now for donation drop offs and they sell anything of value online. I think eventually they will get caught up in a scandal or something and things may change who knows. The market for used items can change a lot and they better be ready to keep up.
