As someone who works in Greenland, rare earth mining is far from Greenland's only hope to obtain economic independence. Greenland has one of the largest supplies of high quality sand due to the glacier and as demand goes up for silicon chips and concrete, this sand is becoming an increasingly viable way for Greenland to profit without the need for explosive mining operations. Additionally, Greenland has a booming tourist industry. New flights have started from Iceland and Nuuk is expanding its airport. This could eventually lead to increased tourism from the US at the same scale seen in Iceland. Greenland needs to grow sustainably and in an environmentally friendly way and hopefully it will gain independence soon.
@sleidman3 жыл бұрын
@Julius Therkelsen You're totally right! Greenland has a booming fishing industry and is one of the few countries that has a sustainable fishery. It's a shame that much of the fish is exported to the EU without the Greenlandic people getting the full economic potential. I definitely think an investment in fish processing plans in Greenland would help keep some of that money in Greenland. I never said I was in favor of mining in kuannersuit. In fact, I am adamantly opposed to it. Uranium mining is dangerous and could leave Greenland with an environmental catastrophe and little economic gain. The only mining that I think Greenland should do in the near future is a socialized/government operated sand and gravel mining. That way all the money stays in Greenland and there is no need for explosives or dangerous chemicals. We need people like you in Greenland fighting for environmental protection. I think Greenland is on it's way towards independence and I'm excited to see them get more sovereignty!

I think its worth pointing out that specifically china's monopoly of rare earth metals is in regards to discovered materials, its suspected the earth is much more even in its distribution, but very few countries have chosen to fund research into surveying for them.
@protorhinocerator1423 жыл бұрын
Rare earth elements really aren't so rare. That's just a name. These elements are usually mined as a byproduct of mining more valuable elements like gold and silver. Oops we got some technetium in there, what should we do? Just stick it off to the side. Someone might use it eventually. And because nobody actually mines them, they become "rare". China went after them specifically, and for a hot minute they had a monopoly on them. Then they got greedy and tried to put hotels on Boardwalk and Park Place. This didn't go over so good. Now other countries have reopened some of their mines, just to keep the supply chain moving, even if they do so at a loss. We can't allow China to have a monopoly over anything ever again. I'm not worried about our supply of these elements. Supply and Demand. As the demand goes up, the supply will go up. It's that simple. If Lithium becomes super valuable with all these electric cars, people will mine it intentionally, and there will be more of it. Just like any other mined resource.

The one thing they didn't bring up is that the consumer cost would sky rocket if China had a major competitor because the rare earth elements that came out to Greenland would definitely bring the price of them up because the cost of mining in Greenland would be insanely high compared to China. As for Denmark owning Greenland I don't agree with that because native Greenlanders are actually Inuit as in indigenous peoples of Arctic Canada and Alaska and with the country being owned by Denmark is essentially cutting them of from the same rights that Canada gives them not to mention that those Intuit's migrated there from Canada 4500 years ago long before Denmark even existed and as such Denmark should not have any right to tax them on their own land.

Greenland is a very interesting place. I know people laughed at Trump for trying to "buy" Greenland, but it would have been a huge boon for the US (and of course why Denmark said no). I, as Narsaq is my hometown, will always opposed the mining of Kvanefjedet, because that's where my real home is, regardless where I am and as optimistic as the politicians of Greenland are for complete independence by 2050, seeing how much corruption and nepotism is spread in Home Rule government of Greenland, I doubt that, that goal is doable, unless a restructuring occurs and that's just the government. Thank you for covering this topic

If you are not part of either Denmark, the USA or Canada. Or, maybe a EU country. your countries goverment will always be way too corrupt and sadly just too small of a goverment to be able to go against huge companies. independence will just mean Greenland will become a mining place to pollute for companies.

Uranium is NOT a very radioactive element, quite at the contrary! If it was, it would be long gone from the Earth’s crust. It is routinely mined the same way than most other ores.
@jacobbergstrom91853 жыл бұрын
Exactly! The extremely long half-life means that the radiation given off is very low. To be harmed by the ore, a person would have to intentionally breathe in a large amount of dust, to overwhelm their respiratory system. With modern mining practices, the threat would be non-existent
@writerconsidered3 жыл бұрын
You kinda missed a big puzzle piece. The one major economic resource greenland does have is fishing. And what effect that mining would have on the fishing industry? My guess is not good. In which case developing one industry that will kill the other industry would completely negate the whole point to begin with. Also my guess is Greenland being part of the civilized world probably has universal healthcare, All that cancer would dramatically increase healthcare costs. This is a classic case of privatize the gains and socialize the losses.

Very excellent video! I am curious though. Why is Greenland so negative to their relation with Denmark? Do you think you could make a video about Greenland-Danish Relations? I mean, from my perspective, it seems Greenland is benefiting a lot from being under the domain of Denmark. Denmark is a wealthy country with a solid Social welfare system that Greenland is also benefitting from. And what does Greenland need to return to Denmark? Very little other than Diplomatic freedom. For being a "colony" of Denmark, it is has avoided a lot of colonial exploitation. I don't think Greenland would be so lucky if it had other countries ruling over it... And it is the very relation with Denmark that they have now, that they avoided getting exploited by a Mining corporate venture and diplomatic pressure from other countries. As well as having a good financial "safety" net from Denmark in order to Decline such deals without too many repercussions towards their current economy.

"It will be a private company who benifits, not the government" Yes thats how basic economics work, that company will hire people, who will go to restaurants,shops,... Thus increasing economic output even further. State owned companies are always less profitable than private companies. I really like your channel, but you should get more info about economics. Basic economics by Thomas Sowell is a good start. And about the owners of the company, no1 should give a shit about the owners of a company, having international investments is a key points in increasing economic output. If an american company wants to build a factory in China, is that bad as well?

There are some significant overstatements of fact in this piece. Most significant is that rare earths are rare and reside in only a very few places. This is not true. According to the USGS, global distribution is as follows; Rare earth reserves by country data is taken from the US Geological Survey's 2021 report on rare earths. China. Reserves: 44 million MT. ... Vietnam. Reserves: 22 million MT. ... Brazil. Reserves: 21 million MT. ... Russia. Reserves: 12 million MT. ... India. ... Australia. ... United States and Greenland. ... Global rare earths reserves. Jun 16, 2021 The true bottleneck is investment in complex, expensive and toxic processing facilities. Misstatements such as this reflect very badly on the research capabilities of the author and call the whole piece into question.

USA has very large military installations in Greenland. It is much like the situation in the northern African nations such as Algeria or Libya. A small number of people live in cities along the coast and USA/Britain/France have gigantic military bases in the empty deserts that make up most of the land.
@killer38833 жыл бұрын
Right now it is a suck on Denmark that costs billions a year, a 9% stake is far from controlling, Denmark can stop the control from going to China, the US does this all the time. Also why do you think it would be unhelpful to have the company be private? Would it not create well paying jobs? Would it not generate tax revenue? It sounds to me that this that it is a catch if Denmark force the mining then Greenland may demand independence and all the money they have put in is a loss, if they don't, then they will continue to loose money.

It is not really that rare earth's are rare, Good quantities of them are found in many locations, it is that the purification and processing of them is difficult and expensive. And the reason why China supplies so much of them is that they subsidize this process (and often downplay the health ramifications) in order to incentivize industry to locate to their country. So I'm not quite sure what makes Greenland's rare-earths so much more valuable than the rare-earths found anywhere else.
@lacdirk3 жыл бұрын
Interesting video, but "until Greenland is able to survive on its own, it is valuable to Denmark" makes no sense. As you explain very well, Greenland can become a prosperous nation if it takes decisions it is unlikely to make unless pressured into them, or when climate change or technological progress dramatically change the accessibility of its resources. Whenever Greenland becomes prosperous, it will become independent, meaning that Denmark will be subsidising Greenland until it becomes independent. At no point will Greenland be providing revenue to Denmark. For Denmark, Greenland will always be an expensive protectorate. You might then argue that subsidising the Greenland economy gives Denmark a say in the private business of exploring and - eventually - exploiting these resources. Perhaps the core of the economy of an independent Greenland will consist of Danish-owned companies. But you also explain - by example - that this is already not the case, with internationally-owned companies already holding substantial mineral rights. So a correct tagline/headline would be that Greenland will almost certainly never be valuable to Denmark, and it almost certainly will never be both prosperous and healthy nor prosperous and democratic (like most resource-rich countries).
