Thank you my friend! I try to honor my own thoughts before I let in the thoughts of others which occasionally leads me to very dumb opinions but more often keeps me clear from bland-ing my thoughts into the river of everyone else's thoughts. What I'm saying is that my thoughts are fresh and never frozen, and picked right from the tree. Whether that tree is smart or is more of a tree "that is trying its best," I don't know but it comes straight from the tree

Also thank you for exposing the true enlightenment meta. I spent 2022 at in a Chan Buddhist community which featured very prominently the stony likeness of Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara’s feminine aspect, Chenrezig. I kept telling the devotees “she’s just trying to get us out of the building so she can snatch a few kalpas of alone time!” but none of them believed me (most of them spoke barely any English).

Holy hell that Diminishing Pools mechanic is GENIUS. That is exactly the kind of thing I want in my game. Its relatively agnostic, not instantaneous most of the time, and it is GM discretion for how many die are rolled. Wonderful design.

I'm a member of an online community that plays a lot of indie games and it embraces the "writers room" style of play for all the games played. While this style of play doesn't meld with players wanting more immersion into the fantasy play space or character fantasy, it's great for players that are seeking narrative satisfaction.

@@rogerc4196 see I just looked this up, you’re absolutely right and it’s from 2004… My question is maybe you can help me answer this Roger if you have a little bit more of a historical perspective… my question is do you feel like trends in gaming are cyclical? I mean, I know there’s some very reliable/standby tropes or themes that stand the test of time, but as far as novel approaches/mechanics to gameplay, do you feel like things come and go and then when they come again, people who weren’t around the last time they were here find them to be like “revolutionary,” and then those are in the hobby for a long time are left thinking like “yeah this is cool, we did it back in 1997“ not sure if you have insight into that but I just thought I should ask because your comments always seem to be “on the level“

@@amanisalone You're making it increasingly-difficult for me to avoid joining at a paid level! But while I'm still balancing precariously on the fence: like anything else, there are some cyclical trends. I feel like it's an important part of the process for every generation to go through that re-discovery and re-invention process, to some degree. I dimly remember some interview with Mike Mearls, I think it was, where he talked about when they started off designing D&D 5e, he had the whole design team play some of every prior edition -- which a good number of them had never done before. So there's something to be said for 'retrogaming', I think, if one can avoid opening that big can of worms labelled 'OSR', about which I have opinions too large to fit within this margin.

Love Kaufman & Synecdoche, New York, very interesting analogy. Although something I thought of is part of the value of his work, the meta acknowledgment, beyond kinda meeting us where we’re at as artistic consumers, its a cathartic exchange with the author, as well as it's allows us to explore the subjective experience of storytelling (both the telling & listening part, which everyone has done to some degree) and how it's constructed and makes meaning phenomenologically. So I’m curious how much crossover there is in TTRPG. But at the very least as you mention, the friction that paradoxically emerges from attempting to hide the man behind the machine apt and should be addressed. Very inspired by Grimwild so far. Making me think of lots of ways of implementing these ideas.

@ I have been trying off and on for years to learn Spanish, and thought recently about trying to solo roleplay in Spanish, using Google Translate to help recordkeep. I don't know if you are a native speaker of Spanish, but if you are not, I am told that non-native speakers often make better Spanish teachers because they know the struggles and process of picking up a language, whereas native speakers just absorb it through life since birth. And hell, if you throw in a "Learn Spanish with El Hombre Solo" segment in your content, you wouldn't get any complaints from me. Though I don't know what the majority of your viewership would think of that. Anyway, cheers, sir!

For folks wanting to get to the discussion on Grimwild - jump to 15 minutes in. Initially it’s a discussion on sound and good shoes and Kleenex vs tissues… which I take as a thesis that Grimwild is a great pair of shoes to invest in that LAST and you’ll keep getting compliments on when you wear them. And the main criticism of others of “D&D vs Grimwild” undermines the RPG discussion because a behemoth of popular culture undermines actual discussions on great fantasy mechanics and narrative at the table.

I would also check out Chasing Adventure. It streamlines some things from Dungeon World and has fewer fiddly bits and currencies than Grimwild seems to. The best part of all three of these games though is that they have free versions so you can read them all and come to your own conclusion! Dungeon World doesn't come with solo rules built in but the paid version of Chasing Adventure does include a page or two specifically about playing it solo.
