I never had luck with miniature roses until this past summer. I accidentally ordered miniature roses and decided to grow them in patio planters. I think I figured out that my issue was over watering in the past. These miniature roses are very cute in planters and I love them.

Bought a miniature rose from the grocery store which my husband found out was named Gigi. It has a wonderful red and white swirl pattern on each bloom. My peach drift roses still have blooms this time of yr in NC. Although it's not steady blooms the drift roses have produced blooms sporadically all throughout its first yr.

Most mini roses we can buy here in Canada from grocery stores (FreshCo, No Frills..), Walmart and Homedopot are Kordana series bred by Kordes, licensed to Westbrooks to grow locally. They are sold as pot roses by Kordes in Germany but once you plant them in the ground, OMG, my 4 mini roses are just growing out of control, delivering me 70-80 flowers per plant per wave of bloom. If you have a Kordana Grande, the flowers can be 7-8 cm just as big as you can get from any shrub roses. Kordana Classic ones are a little smaller in terms of the flower size. The most impressive thing from the Kordana mini roses is the life of each bloom. The official claim from Kordes is 21-24 days of shelf life and it is certainly true. They last super long. One thing people probably are not aware is that the small pot you get from the grocery store actually contains 4-5 plants in it. You can definitely separate them and replant them into multiple pots or locations in the ground. I am a big fan of these mini roses and will keep collecting more colors.

Thanks for your input. I know Burnaby Lake greenhouses is big into mini rose production too. I don't know if those Kordana minis have much scent that I've noticed - what's your impression? Great growers though!

@@FraserValleyRoseFarm Kordana Grande and Kordana Classic have no scent but Kordes has released a new series called " RosAroma" which they call it "Pot roses with scent and good shelf life". I bought one from Fresh Co this summer and have placed it outdoor. The flowers are just as beautiful as other Kordanas but I have not smelt a strong fragrance yet. On their website it says this new variety is designed for indoor and "performances best in a room temperature around 20 °C and will emit their most intense scent". I will move it indoor when the temperature drops and see how it performances. You can find more information from this link: www.rosen.de/distributors/pot-roses/rosaroma.

I have this great rose called Margo Koster. It’s technically a polyantha, but I found it when searching for miniatures as it only gets around 2’. It has had lots of clusters of the tiniest, salmon pink colored flowers since it got planted in early spring. Each flower is about the size of my fingertip. It has also proven to be very disease resistant here in humid central TX, zone 8b.

Love Miniature roses, have just two unnamed (just numbered) because one of our local rose growers has developed some of his own and he asked some local gardeners from clubs 2 try them so he cld see how well in diff locations within a hundred kilometer zones and soli conditions they wld do. (They both r pinks, one darker, very prolific bloomers. Blooming still with rose hips forming well) i decided 2 only trim them back a little. One i planted in ground and doing much better than the potted up one. I managed to duplicate a miniature that was growing in a neighbor's front year (with permission) but didn't know the name. I later was able to purchase La Marne (introduced 1915) and it turns out to be a twin to what I had found, only with more petals per bloom. I have since been told there can be variation in petal count from plant to plant. Also like Verdun (1917). Years ago I purchased some roses from Jackson and Perkins to plant on a sunny slope. After the first year of conscious watering left them and paid very little attention to them. It's difficult to figure out unless the information is provided at the time you get the rose. So many similar roses have been released that it's like finding a needle in a haystack. I've advised people to check the garden center and see if you can narrow it down to something locally common - otherwise, take good notes and pictures and hope that someone on a facebook group may recognize it.

@FraserValleyRoseFarm 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Tiffanie. No, there's not much to say other than what you probably saw on the website: Kordes breeds different series of roses for different purposes, and the mini Kordana roses are bred for mass production of potted minis, where they're often sold without cultivar names (and frankly expected to be thrown away after the initial flush of blooms). They might grow on to make a reasonable garden shrub, but that's not what they're bred or tested for. They're offered to growers as something that will propagate easily, grow quickly, flower uniformly, and respond well to greenhouse forcing conditions.

I think so. You may have to give them a favored position with protection from sun during the hottest parts of the day, but they're pretty tough overall!

These mini roses from the supermarket always die after I plant them; what am I doing wrong? Are they planted to close together?
@FraserValleyRoseFarm
@FraserValleyRoseFarm 3 жыл бұрын
It's tough to make any conclusions from so little detail, but I would start with this: supermarket minis generally begin in a very warm greenhouse to grow and flower quickly. Then they are pushed out to the supermarkets in a stressful shipping step, and then they are displayed for sale, which can be stressful too depending on the location. So by the time you get them home (one more big transition) it wouldn't surprise me if they were ready to drop some leaves or worse. The best you can do it let them settle in for a bit with the least stressful conditions. In a week or two, it's good to get them into a larger pot. After that, it's just manage like a container rose: a good amount of sun, gentle air movement, excellent drainage, water and feed as needed.

@@FraserValleyRoseFarm thanks! I have a lot of success with Heriloom roses who sometimes ships their roses after removing the foliage, which helps them conserve resources. I’m thinking I should probably do the same with these minis and just let them rest a bit.

Where is the best place to buy minis in the US?
@FraserValleyRoseFarm
@FraserValleyRoseFarm 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Miles - I can't order from US nurseries (for the most part) so take my suggestion with a grain of salt, but I've seen minis listed on the Rogue Valley sites, and I heard something about High Country listing a good assortment as well.

I’d like to report that my green colored miniature rose is growing really well after repotting them in a larger container. The blooms are much larger than before although still scentless. The staying power of the bloom is much longer than any other types of garden rose that I have encountered. Edited: grammar 😅

@@FraserValleyRoseFarm another update: the bloom is much larger now and still quite fresh looking. It definitely has staying power. The rose now is starting to turn ivory from green and yesterday, I noticed native bees pollinating it. I was curious and discovered to my surprise that it’s now actually starting to produce fragrance. I find highly scented roses expire much quickly than a miniature rose. Overall, I’m very impressed!
