I want to be able to play effortlessly the music I write (or the "music in my head", if you will), without limiting myself when writing simply because my abilities are too limited. That's pretty much my goal, and also play songs from bands and musicians I like in the process. I wouldn't say i'm particularly stuck, but the progress is not as fast as I want it to be mainly because when i was younger I got so frustrated and slacked a lot so I never got any better until a couple of years ago when I decided to pick up the guitar again and actually get better. Sometimes our limitations are blessings in disguise because they become our unique sound. Finding a way around a technical limitation can make you think in a completely different way. There's a Pat Methany quote where he said something like 'The music I wrote generated all the technique I needed.'

I was one that wanted to play fast, when I improved I soon realized that a song of just shredding is boring. Very few people hum fast playing, songs that live the test of time are melody driven. Recording your playing is essential to measure your progress & identify your strengths & weakness. Song creation is like cooking, playing fast is a spice too use to enhance a meal, if all your eat is garlic, the flavor becomes boring.

Hi Ben ,Is there any problem if I find the optimum tempo for practicing by starting from the target tempo and bringing down until I reach my optimum speed ...Or should I start slow and gradually build up speed until I reach my maximum speed...Which is the right way and.. what to do if I am playing right in my maximum tempo with some tension and extra awareness and inability to do more than one rep,should I slow down or work more time on that tempo or Is it natural?

Ben, what lessons would help me get out of the pentatonic rut? I really feel stuck and tired of playing the same old licks. I want to expand my blues based licks into more shred type territory but I don't know where to begin.

Hi Robert, you need to get to grips with 3nps shapes to help you navigate through modal shapes instead of just penta box positions. You'll need to develop picking and legato simultaneously. Do you need to be able to bend strings with your ring and pinky fingers alone? I always use two fingers to bend if I have to use those two.
