This is so odd to see as I was the guy who sounded the alarm on this and triggered the husband and wife team of researchers to realize this was serious!!! They saw my field notes on Timbers with lesions and me saying it appeared fungal. The fungus was unknown and when I sent in samples they were unable to correctly identify a new fungus. It’s killing the snakes fast right under our noses!!! I even have a power point presentation on this as I was struggling to convince the “experts” there was a problem. It’s on my timber rattlesnakes Facebook page under snake fungal disease. Very odd to see this.

Steve, if you want to know more about this I’m the guy. I pushed this for 10 years before I got traction with people. Sending samples to USGS labs, the dna they use to identify SFD is from one of my samples sent in. I first noticed this in timber rattlesnakes in 2003 ish but watched a population die off over several years. It’s so bad!!

That is a double ______ ( I can't remember what the word is that goes there. It means you are 100% right. It helps and hurts an animal at the Sametime. ) It is sad they cutting down our air supply. Back when I was in school, almost 40yrs ago. Teachers told us that the Amazon Rainforest was responsible for 95% of our oxygen. Then as more and more of the Rainforest was being cut down, where our oxygen came from changed. Now it comes from ocean and the planet life there. Whether or not where our oxygen come from the ocean or not, cutting down the Rainforest is wrong on so many levels. The sad thing is, we can't do anything about it. The Amazon is not in The US and nobody is willing to fight for it and have a country back.................

So there's another type of fungal infection that is killing lizards and frogs. I wonder how/if they are related. I studied biology but didn't finish, but my focus was on microbiology (but bacteria and viruses) as well as molecular genetics. This is interesting and massively concerning - likely overlap with climate change, like I wonder if the same area has seen an increase in humidity that is needed for fungi to thrive

It strikes me as odd that since this fungus has been around for a long time, it hasn't been used for human benefit. I keep thinking about Snake Island or "Ilha da Queimada Grande" off the Brazilian coast which is so thickly infested with the highly venomous Snake called the "Golden Lance head Pit Viper" that the island is posted with warnings to stay away out of fear of imminent death. There isn't a rodent nor a bird that can nest on this Island because the snakes wiped them all out. These snakes apparently eat each other too. Perhaps a half dozen extremely infected snakes with this fungus is just what the doctor (biologist) ordered to eradicate all species of snakes or reptiles from this Island completely? Within a year or two, the island should be free from the snakes and after a time birds or other species of animals might return?

It didn't decide shit. So the first question is: has the infectious fungus a different dna compared to the regular saprophytic one? Is there a noticeable shared gene that could explain it? Do we know that this is a CAUSAL agent or do we have it to do with something like pneumonia in hiv patients, meaning an infection that would normally not harm or endanger healthy snakes but the general populations immune system is weaker bc of stress, climate change, pesticides (as obligatory predators they have the issue that toxins their food took in will be concentrated. 5 mice eating pesticide laden grain, don't excrete that, so the snake might accumulate toxins indirectly and directly. So does the fungus affect healthy ones? We would ideally benefit from a documentation of the cases of in captivity infection and do gene sequencing of the pathogen and comparing it with the regular fungus and with other fungal pathogens that kill snakes, frogs, lizards. Also screen the dead ones on other infections I actually trust NERD to know how to take samples with the lowest amount of contamination and this being a fungus might be very helpful bc its easier to isolate and grow on agar. All in all very concerning. I do see that the cases concentrate in specific climate conditions and well if it does stay in the usa it would help us determine some things
