Two years after an unsuccessful attempt to seize Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, Russia has launched a renewed and intensified military campaign aimed at capturing the strategically important urban center. This move has heightened regional tensions and raised concerns over potential escalation in the ongoing conflict. The Ukrainian military continues to hold approximately 60 percent of the city following intense urban warfare. In a recent address, President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the resilience of Ukrainian forces, stating, “In fact, the occupier fails to achieve its goal of stretching our forces thin and thus weakening Ukraine on a wide front from Kharkiv to the Donetsk regions. I thank each of our soldiers, each sergeant, each officer, who courageously and steadfastly fulfill combat orders and hold our positions."
Deputy Governor Roman Semenukha reported persistent Russian efforts, particularly around Vovchansk, to dislodge Ukrainian forces. Since May 15, the renewed offensive has caused significant damage to the town, further straining the region's defenses.
