When the F-4 was initially released, it was criticized for being overweight, too big etc. When the F-14 was introduced, it was too heavy and too underpowered. The F15? Engines didn't meet initial performance targets and there was a huge scandal when those engine performance targets were relaxed in a slightly dodgy way. Big initial issues with radar and overall reliability. And every single one of these went obscenely over budget during development. All of the above planes went on to become worldbeaters. It's just the nature of the industry: to win a contract you have to overpromise on capability and be too optimistic on timelines and costs. Then you have to manage the fallout when everything falls apart. But in the end, you end up with amazing planes. It just takes longer and costs more.

They also bitched about the F-16, even the A-10 was bitched about. Some people will NEVER be happy, and cannot look at things critically. Now the F-16 is wonderful, and the A-10 has near godlike status. Every plane goes through this cycle it seems.

The F-35 is an absolutely magnificent fighter. Not to mention- why would a pilot not speak poorly about something they fly? As a pilot myself, we complain a lot about airplanes. Pilots in the service complain about their aircraft all the time. Take the B-52, the B-52 is called the BUFF: Big Ugly Fat F@cker.

Recent US attitudes have convinced me that we cannot trust this country anymore and I am also certain that the US can press a simple button that will keep the entire F35 fleet down, the day they decide it. And do not tell me this is conspiracy theory, I will answer you that you are juste too naïve. Regards from Switzerland too. JM

I read about the F-35 and talked to guys who worked at Lockheed/Martin, on the F-35 line, they all said that the F-35 is a piece of junk. The Navy and the Marines should have kept the F-14 as the main fighter interceptor in the carrier fleets and main use the F/A- 18 as the main attack aircraft. You can thank the Air Force for forcing the Navy and the Marines to buy the F-35.

@@thatoneguy226 RCS means "radar cross section". It has to do with how well a radar can detect the airplane. If you change the attitude of an aircraft, the RCS will usually change, and it may make a previously undetected airplane show up on the radar screen really well. I used to operate a radar used to train pilots on evading and countering "ground threats" which are anti aircraft guns and missiles. It was a fun job.

I loved the F16 the minute I saw it for the very first time, and now I feel the same way about the F35. The aircraft is beautiful beyond belief and the best part of it is that it's shared among the Air Force, Navy and Marine Corp. In the early 1970's we had at least 10 different aircraft on board the Independence. It was insane. We had to carry spare parts for all these different aircraft. So much better now with the F35s. @Tommy Aung - TA Its crashed not in the UK waters but international waters..If you find a ship wreck in the middle of an ocean what you find in it its yours.. The Race is on solely to do with The Critical Technology equipment in the aircraft. Dont know if you are aware but Nato has its own Military Standards and Codes. They communicate within the Nato codes and very secret private communication tunnels. Those codes are unknown to Russians and the same thing also applies to Russian military equipment. S-400 Defence systems for instance can not be used by a Nato country because all Nato approved aircrafts will be detected as the Enemy which can trigger the Defence system automatically.

I was an F-4C crewchief at Luke in the early 80's. In 82/83 we transferred them to the Guard and got F-16's. We were still doing TCTO's on the F-4 even as we were getting rid of them and they were built in 63/64 contract years. I spent the next 17 years on F-16's and we were constantly doing TCTO's on them and from what I read, we are still doing them. In fact, we recently lost a pilot at Shaw because his last line of defense (ejection seat) failed him because it was awaiting a part. Luke used to have F-15's and the Arizona Republic wrote some scathing editorials regarding the amount of maintenance they required to fly a single sortie. We used to laugh at that shit because civilians simply did not understand the concept of man-hours. Anyway, life in the fighter world is one of constant improvement. If you look at it as an Indy Car and not as a sedan, it might help many to understand it a little better. i have a good friend who , after retirement, went to work for Lockheed and was in on the ground floor of the F-35 and i have never heard him say a bad thing about the jet.

I’ve counted them all up before and was surprised because I never heard about them, even as an astute student and front row seat-holder at the AFFTC in the 1970s and 1980s. While AV-8 and F/A-18 weren’t USAF programs, I was always reading everything available on sister service jets as well. Viper ended up having a very low total loss rate, especial for a single engine fighter with relaxed stability. Go look at F-100, F-102, F-105, and F-14 total losses/mishaps as well. The Navy really doubled-down on getting a jet that would handle well and run the glideslope nicely after decades of mishaps with fast jets and carriers when working on the Hornet navalization, and it still has a high loss rate/fatality rate. I was also surprised at the FMC and MC rates for the Baby and Super Hornets. As people gained more access to information, USN stopped publishing SH loss rates and FMC/MC rates. F-22 and JSF series are phenomenal when it comes to mishap rates. Same with the Rafale. Now look at the Gripen or any of the Sukhois. Gripen has had 8 total losses out of 271 birds produced, many from stalls because it’s so underpowered. Going over the top in low altitude has resulted in several DFLCS overrides that prevented the pilots from saving them. Another Gripen had the pilot’s G-suit incrementally tug on the ejection seat handle until it activated the sequence, which is an embarrassing oversight in systems trouble-shooting.

What performance characteristics does it have between fully fueled and 50% full? What specific F35s did you test and what problems did you have? @@saquist Yes. The 5th gen fighters are also the most sophisticated, most capable machines we ever had. Complex beyond believe. On top of that are tons and tons of safety regulations. Back in the 50's losing a pilot due to unsafe technology or procedures was just common. We here in Germany lost our first two Eurofighter Typhoons in a crash last year... after 13 years (IIRC) of operation! Losing that many jets in a month was good in the 50's... the Starfighter was one of the worst fighter jets ever made, nicknamed flying coffin or widowmaker. The term "Super Starfighter" was used by Lockheed to describe the F-104G in marketing campaigns, but fell into disuse. A less charitable name appeared, "The Flying Coffin" from the translation of the common German public name of Fliegender Sarg. The F-104 was also called Witwenmacher ("Widowmaker"), or Erdnagel ("ground nail") - the official military term for a tent peg.[3] The Pakistani AF name was Badmash ("Hooligan"), while among Italian pilots its spiky design earned it the nickname Spillone ("Hatpin"), along with Bara volante ("Flying coffin"). In the Canadian Forces, the aircraft were sometimes referred to as the "Widowmaker",[4] or the "Lawn Dart".[5]

I was always on board the F35,....even though at times it looked like it would be one of the most controversial aircraft ever. Mind you,........people who criticise the development pain of the F35, in Australia, should read up on the F111 and its development pain as well as delayed service entry with the RAAF. What staggers me the most about the F35 criticism,...and there still is plenty of it. Is the authors of said criticism are seemingly incapable of acknowledging that Israel, UK, South Korea, Japan, Belgium, Norway, Singapore, Poland, Australia and a host of other nations have purchased the aircraft and are placing the aircraft as the center piece of their defence needs for the next 30 years, particularly as Air Combat BOS. I asked a few F-22 pilots at the airshow what they thought they said the F-35 was more or less a bomber not a pure air to air fighter like the F-22.
@mungo7136
@mungo7136 3 жыл бұрын
But fighters do not win the wars. Actually the pure fighters are the most useless military aircraft at all on their own - they have only purpose when there are enemy planes. Besides - F-22 is already aging and who knows whether there is any chance for any serious upgrade. While F-35 is growing and will be kept growing for a long time. So in 10 years F-22's only advantage could be the speed.
@LRRPFco52
@LRRPFco52 3 жыл бұрын
Neither the F-22 nor the F-35 are a pure anything, nor were they meant to be. The F-22A Block 30 and higher combat-coded Raptors are one of the best VLO precision strike/penetrator aircraft in the US inventory. They also have better resolution and PID capability than any AWACS, with tighter LPI/LD Data Link with each other. They can also do EW that makes the retired Sparkvark or Prowler envious. What I’ve noticed from some F-22 pilots is that they went from being the prima donnas of all air shows, to second fiddle with all the emphasis and attention the F-35 is getting lately. There are several F-22A pilots who have converted to the F-35A, and they couldn’t be happier. Mainly because they get to fly a lot with a jet that has 72-95% availability versus one that has somewhere in the 50-60% MC rates. Big thing with the F-22 is that Bush/Rumsfeld/Gates, and Obama/Gates pulled out the stops to kill the program while production was still in its toddler years, not even meeting 1/3rd of the jets the USAF needed to replace the aging fleet of F-15Cs. Bush family has been on the Chinese payroll since the 1970s when Bush Sr was ambassador, so no surprises there, and they paid for Clinton’s and Obama’s campaigns with millions of illegal campaign finances, so the F-22 really scared them and Russia after they acquired internal capes briefs and TDP from traitors within the US at the highest levels. Imagine PACAF with 200 F-22s, PACEUR with 200 F-22s, and 240 US-based F-22s. That’s a game-changer for Russia and China, that requires them to totally revolutionize their aerospace industries. China is doing everything to meet that demand possible, while Russia is struggling to crank out a 4.7 Gen fighter that doesn’t even have the right engines. Now that there are 611 F-35 variants delivered, Russian and China are getting nervous. If only they could buy another US President...oh wait, “Now we have Biden-su."

The conflicted requirements for each service however, (leave alone politics) have conspired to make the F35 astronomically expensive, and only an average fighter aircraft to show for it.

On it's introduction, the Eagle was obviously a winner almost from moment one. Given the fact that it met it 's performance criteria, it would have taken some serious issue, that of course never emerged to have stopped it from being the great fighter that it has proven to be. (unlike the troubled development of the F35) As to your comment that I am hating on the F35 because of "bandwagon" as you put it , is incorrect. My concerns over the F35 stem from it's performance shortcomings with regard to potential adversaries,and it's staggering cost. @@dheemanrajkhowa2866 Spey did not design the F16 or the A10. During the 1960s, Pierre Sprey belonged to a group of defense analysts who called themselves the 'Fighter Mafia'. At the time he joined them, he had been a weapons system analyst working for the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Systems Analysis. The 'Fighter Mafia' group of defense analysts worked behind the scenes in the late 1960s to advocate a lightweight fighter. I'd say one of the more impressive feats is that the F-35, like the F-22, retains its ability to do BFM. Because if two stealth aircraft groups meet, I think there's a fair chance they end up within visual range and spiraling to the deck. Well, I suspect the 35 would spiral down. The 22 seems like it would be a better vertical fighter. But I'm no expert.

I grew up during the Vietnam era. My father was a pilot for the airforce and flew the C130 Reconnosience plane out of Yakota AFB, Japan. I remember the 105's F4-C's and other fighters in those days, and I attended numerous airshows. Because Yakota was a base that was actively supplying forces to the Vietnam War, many of those jets would return with heavy damage. As a kid in the '60s and '70s, that was a hard thing to witness. I always loved the fighter jets and how they would perform. In today's world, I think it is important for the US to use the highest performance, intelligence, and agility for our safety. Thank you for your service to this country, and thank you for your explanation of the issues surrounding the F35. I can't wait to see what is on the horizon in the future for our Airforce. Stealth, Firepower, and the ability to communicate with so many other platforms are awesome. What do you feel is important for the future aircraft, and do the Armed Services ever consider what you guys have to say. Thanks again, Felix.

I worked concurrent engineering at LMC numerous times and it's always more expensive because you design ahead of getting all the relevant requirements and changes that come with mating parts of a mechanism. So you shorten the time span to design completion of a mechanism considerably but it will cost you a lot more money to continually redesign the same part or parts over and over again.

There are many years of pilot reports on all 3 JSF variants, from all 3 US services and multiple foreign partner nations who operate them. All former F-15C, F-15E, F-16AM, F-16C, F/A-18, Super Hornet, and F-22A pilots. The thing they all say is how much more of the battlespace they can see than even AWACS, how much better the performance is than legacy fighters with external stores, how much more range they have, how easy it is to fly, and how well they connect with each other over vast distances. It’s a totally different conversation than we were used to having from older generations where they talk about speed, sustained vs instantaneous turn rates, climb rate, man-machine interface, cockpit layout, how many Gs they could pull, etc. F-35s do really well in all those metrics, but the pilot perspective is no longer focused on them. Every other fighter is trying to be like JSF, with manufacturers trying to incorporate some of the JSF technology into later variants of the legacy birds, but it doesn’t really work.
The F-35 has ONLY ONE RIVAL that WON'T GIVE UP...
