The days of Long term contracts is over, Machado and Harper want long term contracts for big money but they have not panned out. Albert Pujols, Miguel Cabrera, Chris Davis, Jacoby Ellsbury, David Price, Jason Hayward, Felix Hernandez, Yu Darvish, Yoenis Cespedes and Pablo Sandoval. Now Robinson Cano and Zack Greinke are still good players but there teams they signed with are in rebuild mode. Teams are getting smarter, like the braves signing Donaldson to a 1 year or Cody Allen and Matt Harvey to Angels for 1 year, teams dont want to be stuck with a player that doesnt pan out for all those years. So now take the contract options.

Just look at a guy like evan longoria, perennial stud at third base, last season he was 32 years old and washed up af. Hes done. Players need to be compensated in thier 20s (their prime years), not expecting a 10 year deal guaranteed in their late 20s where within a few seasons they will be half the player they used to be. Baseball is a young mans game (without steroids) The way players are compensated needs to be changed. You cant pay a 26 year old aaron judge 600k in 2018 as one of the best players (he led the league in WAR in 2017, the prior season) then when hes finally eligible to negotiate a contract at age 30 (rediculous) you tell him hes too old and going to break down. Theres 100% an mlb strike coming in 2021 when the new labor deal is negotiated unless the owners are willing to make big changes to the current system.

Rick Nash yep. Once arbiration eligible they get more than rookie salary, but still 1 year deals and almost always underpaid. Degrom was cy young, he got 1 year 17 mil for 2019 in arbitration. 1 year deal, player assumes all the risk and teams take very little risk... Zach grienke will make 34 mil as kay said... and teams are done commiting that kinda money to aging players on long guaranteed deals. Cant blame the teams, but if they wont pay the free agents, players like degrom need to be paid for what they are worth currently... Degrom will get way shorted in free agency due to his age.

I think it says more about what the league thinks of both Machado and Harper. Both come across arrogant. There is no doubt if Mike Trout the market, he would have signed a huge contract in December, and he would have had 12 teams looking at him. These two guys want big time money, and their attitudes are why they aren’t getting it. Harper was offered 300 million to stay with Washington (a good team mind you) and decided to test the market. And all you have to know about Machado, is that the Dodgers who have spent more money in the last 10 years than anyone, who have a small hole in their infield. I know they have Seager but they could always move him to second or the outfield. The Dodgers wouldn’t even look at Machado. Honestly that is where he fit best, and The Dodgers said good riddance. I don’t know them two not signing has so much to do with the market, rather than teams are weary giving these two particular players an insane contract.
