I too am fighting phone addiction. But also realised, two phones actually helps me. Putting my main iPhone away after a work day (with timed DnD), and using my Android like an iPad, with no social media is honestly great. Phones are useful as tools too such as timers, podcasts, clocks, calendars, etc.

This is exactly what I do I have a sonium xp3 flip phone that I use for texting and calls. I also have a iPhone 12 that I only use for data. If I want to be less distracted for the day I just leave my iPhone at home. I do make/receive all my calls and texts on my flip phone and just carry both phones most of the time

Smart watch can accomplish this too. You can set your phone in another room and to do not disturb, so only specific people can contact you. Also you can limit the notification types allowed on the watch.

iPhone has focus modes. 10pm on weeknights, my phone goes into sleep focus and I have most apps hidden, so if I pickup my phone, I have to search to find apps, so I don’t. The only notifications I allow are from my daughter, but she’s in the other room, so it’s just for emergencies. Setting up different focus modes is kind of a pain, but it’s so helpful. I use my iPhone for work as well, so once I’m done and logged out for the day, I have a personal mode and get no notifications from Teams or Outlook for work. I setup a family mode for when I don’t want to be distracted and I’m hanging out with my daughter. Apple has come a long way with more than just having DND. You just have to take the time to do it. 😊

This is a great idea. I'm eating a similar variation but using a Nokia Kaios 4G phone, it's basically like a dumb phone It has some limited Google functionality but most importantly it can hotspot 4G. I mostly home-based but my main number is in my Nokia phone and all my WhatsApp Facebook etc is in my smartphone which I run off Wi-Fi, when I go out I take my smartphone and can regularly hotspot Wi-Fi off the Nokia to check emails and Facebook etc. I can't leave hotspot on all the time but it does drain the battery open Nokia if it's on a long time, no problem if you have a power bank though. I do have a second sim but it's very unimportant, I put it in my smartphone It just isn't emergency thing really so if anything happens to my other I can always call. It doubly helps if you have each similar different network so you have complete coverage when you in a blank spot of one sim. For me sometimes I can use my smartphone in a healthy way but if things are going wrong I can switch it off but no I'm still contactable in case the emergency. This was the thing that really made it so I couldn't put my smartphone down. I mean I'm still having my struggles I'm freely using my smartphone but there was a pathway to turn it off and went necessary. Wishing everyone the best

When my old smartphone died, I dug through my scrap electronics, and revived an old Blackberry. Because of the lack of Service Books, all I can do is call and text with it. I was forced to do all my online activity, including social media on a desktop computer. If I needed to do any extensive travel outside of the house, I have a dedicated Garmin GPS to handle navigation duties. I have since acquired another smartphone, but it doesn't have any phone service. I tend to use it more like an iPod, for listening to music and podcasts that I've saved onto it.

@@KOKOTHELOCO I ended up finding the Garmin in a thrift store for $6. It turns out the GPS I bought also has a live traffic receiver, and lifetime map updates! i know that this is a good video before even watching it. let me tell you all that I cannot fully downgrade myself to a dumbphone only because I work in tech and I work with tech. so smartphones are something I cannot fully get rid of in my life. But I have found the best way for an introvert like me to take control of things is to have all my work stuff be rid of social media, bloatware and only have works apps in those. then I have a high quality smart phone fully dedicated for leisure and games and fun and taking pics -- all the distracting fun stuff. That I keep in my closet locked away until it's the weekend or when I'm out with friends. then I have a dumbphone that's really very simple BUT smart enough to have all my necessary stuff like e-wallets and messaging apps in. that I take with me everywhere LOL

Respect for going through all these steps to defend yourself from the algorithms, however its better to develop mental fortitude to just not click or engage in these activies, without having tools to block them out for you. Because as technology progresses you may find you self in situations, where you cant just block social media or have a second device to fall back on, it may be something companies will prey on eventually. So if you got the agency to see the addicting thing and not interact with it, then you can strengthen your mental state in the process.
@KOKOTHELOCO Жыл бұрын
The whole idea is based on this quote from the atomic habits book - “When scientists analyze people who appear to have tremendous self-control, it turns out those individuals aren't all that different from those who are struggling. Instead, 'disciplined' people are better at structuring their lives in a way that does not require heroic willpower and self-control. In other words, they spend less time in tempting situations.”
@Maebbie Жыл бұрын
@@KOKOTHELOCO that book isnt some sort of holy script, its just flawed to shut off everything distracting, as there will be days you wont be able to, so i guess i mean like learn to shut off the distractions internally.

Except there are an increasing number of jobs which you can't maintain if you're not contactable during all times of the day. I work in health care, if I don't spontaneously cover someone else's shift now and then I am considered less valuable and may be replaced.
