Pilates and gyrokinesis are my two saving graces since my herniated disc diagnosis 4 years ago - stretching and decompressing my back and learning how to properly use my glutes, hamstrings, and ALL of my abdominal muscles really well. I’m shocked how long I was doing weight lifting and other exercises (with personal trainers even!) without ever really being told how to use those muscles and when/how they should be working.

I had a herniated disc in my 40s. During PT I was told to do that exact exercise he was doing at the beginning of the video.. BIG MISTAKE! After a few repetitions, I suddenly had excruciating pain and sciatica for the first time in my life. I believe that particular exercise pinched my bulging disc or even made it worse. It's 10 years later and I ve been in constant pain since and injections and meds don't work at all. I have been advised by several surgeons not to get surgery unless I can't walk or get major nerve symptoms because they say back surgery isn't that successful and only makes the arthritis spread up your back faster. So I sit here literally bone on bone in pain for over a decade

One of the most effective things I did for my sciatica was hanging/deadhangs, partially inspired by your videos for both shoulder health and spinal decompression. I wish I had an inversion table, but it definitely helps to just hang by your arms, drop everything and let your lower body weights pull your spine apart and suck those discs back into place before carefully "reassembling" yourself as you put weight back on your feet. Every sort of discomfort and pain in your back just suddenly evaporates and you feel so light and wonderful. There's definitely help in decompression.

I have a herniated disc for 17 years now. Changed my whole life. I used to jog and walk 5 miles everyday. Now I cant unless I had a cane or something to hang onto. I'm so glad you made the comment about hanging. I've wondered if that would help. I'm gonna try it. I'm sorry you have to live with back pain. It's so miserable. Again thanks so much for the advice. I love you guys and follow your videos daily. I'm getting back into shape after a trip and fall accident in December 2021, where I fractured my right hand (boxer break) a torn medial meniscus (never repaired) and a herniated disk between C5 and C6. I did have the herniated disk fixed by an ACDF surgery by BioSpine Institute in Tampa on 11/30/22 and it was the best move I could do. I no longer have any pain and am doing P/T to get my range of motion to my neck and shoulders. Thanks to the surgery and your non-stop, helpful videos, I'm in the best shape that I've been in years. Thank you!

And since soo many messed up by abusing pain killers, the people who really need help with pain are looked at like a drug seeker/addict. There is a difference between being a drug addict and being physically dependent on pain meds in order to barely exist and do the bare minimum every day. Its a dismal way to exist.

Thanks for your great videos!!!! I can be dense sometimes, so maybe I missed it, but I don't think that it can be stressed enough that anyone who has sciatica or back pain should look for a PT therapist who specializes in spines. The basic McKenzie method shown in the first part of your video absolutely worked to get relief and help to cure my severe right leg pain. In my first PT session (and all follow-ups for that matter) the therapist had me do a variety of movements and then had me try different stretches and exercises. Some that were tried reduced my pain and some increased it. The ones that reduced pain were added to my routines. Thanks to the targeted PT spine approach I am now off all pain and NSAID meds, back to normal activities, and completely pain free. The other day I walked my dog for about 2.5 miles. I'm almost back to normal length dog walks. Trying some KZbin back pain and sciatica relief techniques may help, but my advice would be to get to at least a few PT sessions using a spine specialist. Thoughts and prayers for Bob. I really miss his contributions and humor in the videos.

OMG this is what i needed the arm raise. I've been in 2 weeks of hell since trying some other dumb youtube bench press video to arch your back. (don't do this after 40) I learned the hard way. I went back to doing all my back therapy stuff from a car wreck, but I think its herniated disc. I'm basically been stuck for 7 days on ibuprofen and everything makes it worse except walking, but even then I walked too much. I raised my right arm just curious, felt nothing, raised my left arm, felt a pull across my entire back. Did the left a few more times and instant relief. I'm never putting my left arm down again. lol

My lower back spine had a huge, let's say "cavity". I could feel my spine wasn't aligned right. Something probably happened years ago when I helped with moving heavy things up and down the stairs and my disc slipped. Over the years I had this radiating pain, especially when I woke up in the morning. Stubborn me didn't seek help. It is only a few years ago that I did some rotation exercises of the spine. Gently. It was a KZbin video showing how one might "pop" the lower back. My spine didn't pop, but I noticed my spine began to align more and more and the cavity slowly disappearing. Mind you, it did come with some temporary side effects, as I had these sudden pinching nerve pains that caused me to totally fall to the ground. This would always happen suddenly. I would suddenly fall to my knees again and again. But this was temporary, luckily. Pinched nerves, I guess. I also do this thing where I lay on my back on the mattress and my buttocks over the edge of the mattress with my legs as support. With this I could feel the pop of the lower spine, moving into place. It took a few years, but now it seems everything is in place once again, although not perfect, but no more radiating pains.

When I got an MRI none were severe but recently I was laying down in bed and when I went to turn over in bed it did something to my neck and it popped and hurt really bad. I also think I somehow managed to tear both of my Achilles tendons , I don’t know how. I can still walk on them sorta but I can’t flex my foot down very well and I hear pop noises once in a while. The doctors in this rural area haven’t wanted to take care of me much , I’m afraid.

Aren't these stretches on the side of the pain exactly the opposite of McKenzie stretches? That is, MCkenzie says to bend toward the painful side in order to push the disc back in its center location. With these conflicting therapy approaches, I wonder if we will have some animated MRI's where one can practice several moves, see what the damn disc does, and choose correctly the right move. That would be pretty expensive procedure but if it avoids surgery and years of pain...
@magncity1817
@magncity1817 10 ай бұрын
I think the point he was making in this video is after 50+ years old there is nothing to push back in related to a herniated disk as the herniating occurred at a younger age and isn’t really the sudden problem at an older age. Therefore your sudden problem isn’t that you found out about a herniated disk at he older age by virtue of an MRI showing a herniated disk. Thus, this video does not apply to everyone as he pointed out.

I had my evaluation today with a PT. They had me stand on a machine that took a scan on my feet as to how I was standing. The computer made a picture of my skeleton based on my stance. It wasn't good. My feet probate bcz I have high arches, which, the Dr said caused my knees to bend inwards, and my hips to be offset, and everyone else off balance as well. So, I'm still not sure yet where my pains stem from. But this video gives me a great idea. I've tried other stretches, so I'll try this one! Perhaps it may give me relief for my hip/back pain. Thank you! 😊❤️ Loved this ending, it made me laugh! 🤣

Hi Bob, I read about your ataxia. Keep the medication Methylphenidate (Ritalin) in mind. I suffered from blepharospasms and tardive dyskinesia for which there is no treatment. However I am symptom free for 6 years. Methylphenidate first but now I take Dexamfetamine. It performed a miracle 👍🏻 Maybe it could help you with speech and movement

I've laid flat on a yoga mat with a dog rope toy with the knot's on the upper traps. Deep breaths, through the nose. Takes about 20 min to an hour. Keep your shoulders up and back as much as possible. Neck tractions helps to. Ice also. I have a fusion c6-c7 with a bone plug and hardware.

mine , L4/L5 had it painful for about 8 months- was scheduled for surgery, kept working out, kept cycling the entire 8 months so I just worked around it, Started doing dead-hangs, at month 7, and about a month later I felt way better and canceled the surgery date. Now-- I did something and it's back, my glute is on fire when I sit..ugh, I am so frustrated!
