It's unfortunate that many people still view this condition as shameful or embarrassing, leading to feelings of isolation and reluctance to seek treatment or support. By increasing awareness and understanding, we can create a more supportive and accepting environment for those who are affected by herpes. It's an important topic that deserves more attention and understanding. Thank you for sharing this.

I think more people need to realise that around 60% of Americans have HSV1 and when you add HSV2 it's more than 80% of people have 1 and/or 2. The ones who don't have symptoms act as though they're not infected when they probably are they're just lucky not to get symptoms. There wouldn't be so much of a stigma with having herpes symptoms if people knew this.

I met my current partner, learned more about HSV, and learned how to stand up for myself in doctor's offices and have open and honest conversations with my partners about it

Thanks! Best explanation of these awful sores I’ve ever heard. Big thanks. I’ve had mouth sores since I was a little kid. They flare up when I’m sick or stressed. Recently I’ve come to know they flare up when I have big dental work. 2 years ago I had 2 big fillings replaced. I was in chair for 2 hours. I had immediate pain in 2 adjacent teeth. Many X-rays and CT scans later nothing was seen to explain the pain. I eventually had a root canal on one tooth…no help, so the tooth was extracted and I have an implant now. Still have occasional pain. Going through the same now with the other tooth. Looking back and after hearing this explanation of how these buggers live in the ganglion of the nerve, I’m thinking I just had nerve pain. Not one dental expert I went to ( and I saw 3 different ones) suggested this might me an cause. I’m sitting here now healing from the recent implant and 7 sores near where he did the surgery. I feel that those two teeth were removed for for no reason. I still get the random pains. I paid over 11k for all this as well. What an eye opener. If you have these in your mouth and get flare ups after dental work. Do not resort to extractions if there is no a sign of tooth infection. The pain is from the virus. Now I know!

This is one one best breakdowns I’ve seen. I’ve had HSV 1 for 15 yrs, and let me tell you, it’s caused many uncomfortable weeks in my life. I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis 5 yrs after the initial outbreak, and my Rheumatologist stated that recent studies may show a link between the two (but not proven yet). I’m no doctor, but I’m certain they HAVE to be though. I also experience trigeminal nerve pain a few days before the outbreak on the right side of my face and up the side of my head. Trigeminal pain, honestly, is worst than the RA and the HSV blisters. As I get older, now 40, I don’t get breakouts as often praise the LORD! After 10 years of marriage, my husband has never contracted it. Maybe he’s one of the lucky A-Symptomatics out there. Thank you for such a wonderful breakdown, with imagery and everything! God Bless!

Amanda ... I'm curious to know whether you've ever had TITANIUM Tooth Implants. I did and was highly allergic to Titanium, which lead to no less than 3 MISDIAGNOSIS from 3 different Rheumatologists, who all diagnosed early onset Arthritis. Fortunately I didn't believe them and was completely cured after taking Titanium Drops specifically created for me by an Homeopath. All symptoms were completely GONE and have never returned in about 20 years now. All 6 implants fell out on their own over several years, because my allergy cause my jawbone to move away from the Titanium, thus causing the implants to be loose and fall out. X-rays have shown the my jawbone healed afterwards.🙏

Fun fact - you can get these sores not just on your lips - I get them up my nose too and from there, it somehow flared up in my inner ear, causing tremendous vertigo. I was driven to a doctor with this sudden onset of vertigo and this good, old, very experienced doctor asked me if I ever get cold sores. I thought it was an odd question. Then he asked me if I get them up my nose as well. Then he informed me that its very possible that I got it in my ear as well and it will resolve within a few days. It sure did! So now I know. If I get a tickle in my ear canal, and then can't walk normal, I sure know whats happening. Also, there is a small tube of medication called Lipactin and its AMAZING. OtC too. And not expensive. Once you feel the tingle, apply that and the blister can't come out at all. It chokes it out. Literally. What a horrendous thing to live with, honestly.

@mannotwiththeplan Try boost up your immune system, and have cream at hand always. I went through a period for a few years where the slightest tingle id feel, id apply cream, and the cold sore wouldn't even grow out. Also, when the cold sore would develop a white head, id pop it with a pin, and delicately get the fluid out without touching any other skin, then apply cream inside the wound. Maybe this contributed to it becoming completely dormant. I still haven't had a cold sore again!

Since I have taken 4000 IE Vitamin D every day (+Mg), I don't have any outbreaks anymore (but were still present with 2000 IE /d). Better take oil droplets (Vitamine D solves in fat), and it's easier for dosing. If you don't eat enough vegetables, also supplement Vitamin K. It's psychologically impacting because it became a stigma in the 80s thanks to a Time Magazine cover. Around the time acyclovir was developed. Now isn't that a coincidence? Nothing like changing a benign infection's status to a dangerous std to get everyone running to buy the medication. Prior to that, it was just that, a cold sore down there. It wasn't classified as a venereal disease. To this day, people openly talk about their cold sores, but the genital version is taboo and stigmatized, when it's the SAME virus. Actually, the oral version is more dangerous because it can get into your eyes or brain. The genital version is only dangerous to a newborn if the mom has an active flare-up during delivery. I've even read stories of people with cold sores rejecting person with genital herpes. Like, wtf.
@janicevictor6764
@janicevictor6764 Жыл бұрын
@@dammar117 In This Podcast Will Kill You, they also link the stigma to the advent of antibiotic treatment being able to cure other STIs that then led to the religious a-holes demonizing herpes to continue their celibacy dogma. The psychological impact of HSV2 is horrible, even though the pain of HSV1 is much worse, but maybe it's different for men.
@dammar117
@dammar117 Жыл бұрын
@@MrTreework But do you expect people with cold sores to disclose? I bet not. And yet, the physical implications are the same. They can even give it to you down there due to crossover, and you would end up devastated and stigmatized, while they would still get to publicly make light of their pimple. When you think about it, oral hsv is worse because A) it's visible (nasty looking); and B) it can get to your eyes or brain.

I’m going on 7 years with HSV2. The first 3 year are the worst. But after that it’s just you and your lifestyle. Stress has been a huge factor with me when it comes to breakouts. Today, it’s barely 3-6 breakouts a year. Yes many look at this like omg I have for life. Yes true, but it’s no where near like HIV/AIDS. Fear with the net/social media will do that to you. Dont be ashamed, we ALL make mistakes sexually at young ages and many of times we have to suck it up as adults and pay the consequences. I’m going on 36 now and my main health isn’t this but high blood pressure and diabetes in which is 100x severe. Food for thought!

I remember having one cold sore outbreak when I was in my teens. After I had my daughter at age 29, the outbreaks were constant. As soon as one set would heal another outbreak would start. Not just one sore but three or four. Lots of swelling and pain and even swollen glands on my neck. My dentist was the first one to offer medication, which was a godsend. Each outbreak became less severe and there was a longer time between outbreaks. I now only get them when I’m stressed and I am 66 years old. This video had perfect timing as I am now in the midst of three sores which are small but still painful. I love watching your videos and learning something with each viewing.

You always make things so much easier to understand, I can't thank all of you enough! My husband has HSV-1, and told me when we were dating. He wouldn't kiss me until his outbreak was over and more time had passed. Oddly enough, his outbreaks seem to have almost stopped now, and we've been married for 30 years. I myself have never contracted it; I could be asymptomatic, but in 2007 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I had surgery, chemo and radiation, and I would've expected it to show up then, as shingles did. I had chickenpox as a child, so that's where that came from. I just would think, with my immune system so compromised, that it would've shown up then. Anyway, this was really interesting and informative; I'm going to make sure I show this to my husband. Thanks again!

Now, when I get the first inkling of an outbreak (you all know, your lip or nose starts to tingle) I take two pills and 12 hours later, take 2 more....the outbreak is GONE! I mean, there might be a very, very small puffiness but I never get any large blistering or swelling like I did before. Ill even add a topical antiviral on affected area as well, but prob dont need it. Hope this helps someone.

I have suffered with cold sores on my nose for 20 years, never on my lips always on the side or on the bridge of my nose, always starts off with my glands under my jaw and in front of my ears becoming enlarged, then an area of my nose goes dry then peels and out come the sores, Don't know what triggers them off have gone 1 year without then get 1 a month for 6 months. Never really tried any medicines as a doctor once told me, you have herpesvirus for the rest of your life, if they blister then the virus has passed,. It's just embarrassing when they are on the nose as people only associate cold sores with the mouth area, it's nice to know other people suffer with them on thier nose too.

Great topic and great show, as usual! I was diagnosed with HSII in the 70s while in college, which is classic and customary. I’m 70 now, and still have periodic “reactivation infections”. In my youth, upon initially obtaining the virus, I can remember getting reactivations that seemed once a month, and yes, both physical and mental stressors can set it off. The number of episodes I had in the early days was exhausting, but a miracle happened with age, the number of incidents and intensity decreased with time. As I said, it seemed like it was a monthly thing in my 20’s, 30’s, and 40’s, but my stressors were much higher in those days. I noticed a slowdown once I entered my 50s, where it seemed that it would pop up only 2-3 times per year, then once per year, then once every few years. Currently? Maybe once a year or once in two years. Knowing my body as well as I do, I always know when an event is coming, so zero sex the moment I start feeling that sensation, and most times, I feel only the “sensation” with no eruption. I’m one of the lucky ones I’m sure, for which I am most grateful. Triggers are how often I have sex and stress. In the beginning, each episode would be full-blown and painful, from onset to cessation about 3 weeks; then I would only get one full-blown episode, with a couple of very minor episodes to no breakout at all, just a few days of soreness, and then it would pass. For me, the biggest trigger is how often I have sex, and how aggressive the sex act is, and this includes masturbation; mild ok, aggressive I risk disturbing the virus. That tells me that it is resident in the penis, so it does not like being manhandled, so to speak. Anyway, just openly sharing my personal experience with HSII, and I’ve never had HS I… thankfully, one is plenty believe me! 😊

I notice that I am more susceptible to cold sores when my body's energy levels are low. Like when I've been tired or overloaded with work for days or weeks. When the tingling inside my lips comes on I notice now days and respond with topicals. It greatly helps even to the point were outbreaks are much less frequent. I didn't know what these symptoms meant though until you explained it just now. So this is helpful to me. I'm also very fond of the concept of 'life long learning'. A great idea moving forward. I was considered a poor student at school, but I never knew it. What I DID know however, was that I was actually quite bright. I was rebellious and disruptive and I guess my teachers mistook this for stupid. Thanks again for the explanation of herpes. 😮

I used to work for a group of OB/GYNE'S. It never failed that we would get a call that a patient had sex on Saturday (usually someone new to them) and by Tuesday it was too painful for them to sit down! It was almost always genital herpes! We had one OB patient who was on her 5th child. Close to the due date they would check if the virus was active or not. If it is - they can't have a vaginal delivery as it's too dangerous for the baby. Her first 4 were delivered vaginally but she tested reactive right before delivering #5! She had never had an outbreak in all the years since her original exposure! Then she had to go home and tell her husband why she was having a c-section!

Brain herpes. Earlier this year my dad fell and hit his head, hard. It ended up killing him. But before it did the hospital people just couldn't figure out what was going on with him. One thing they thought, and his symptoms did seem to match it, was a herpe brain infection. So they ended up scrapping that, I'm not sure why because they never did give a final diagnosis. Dad said he was ready to die (he was 89) and he was in terrible pain. They treated the pain. Dad didn't lose memory.

I stayed with him for a long time, partially because deep down I thought that no one else would ever want me. Long story short, I am now married to someone else who is also a carrier and we are both in "remission." :) The diagnosis does suck, but it's not a death sentence. An estimated 67% of the world population is carrying one form of herpes virus.

Had a boyfriend years ago that had HSV-1 so I made a Chickweed salve (I read that this is helpful in healing it quickly). Then waited until he had a breakout on his lip. Healed FAST! I had never had one before but started to feel (at a later date) a tingle on my lip as he had explained he felt when one would start. Used the salve & it never broke out. Have never had that feeling again or broken out. As far as I know now, he rarely broke out again. Try it! Infuse fresh chickweed in olive oil using a glass jar sitting in a water bath in a pan in the oven. Very low heat, can vent with the oven door open. Strain after the oil has a lovely green color from when the cells break open. In a double boiler (glass or ceramic bowl over water in a saucepan on the stove top) melt some beeswax & stir it in. Place the coated spoon in the freezer to cool. When the consistency is how you like it, pot in glass jar & keep in a cool place out of the sun. Use a spoon, popsickle stick, etc., to remove a small bit for use. Do not contaminate with placing your fingers in the jar. Cheers!

I’ve found changing my diet by minimizing foods containing arginine keeps flare-ups at bay. If a flare-up does occur, taking l-lysine supplements AND eliminating arginine rich foods reduces and brings things back to a normal fairly quickly. I quit being surprised that medical first goes for pharmaceuticals over diet changes. With the high cost of medical in the US, finding lower cost alternatives is my first go to. Pharmaceuticals are my last resort. The knowledge that this channel brings is awesome and much valued! Thank you! One's immune system is a DEFINITE factor in how bad things get. During the peak of the AIDS crisis, one of the more painful symptoms was patients having sores from Herpes not only on and around the lips, but all around the inner surface of the mouth and down the throat. Anyone else with a severely compromised immune system could also end up with far worse outbreaks than are typical. The stigma around Herpes is deeply frustrating. It wasn't actually looked down upon until recently, the 1960's if I remember right - it was just "one of those things" that happened to just about everyone, and while it could be uncomfortable few cared about it on a social level. Then along came a pharmaceutical company that discovered a drug that would reduce the chance of a Herpes outbreak causing a sufficient viral load to infect another person. They put this new drug on the market, but it wasn't selling well. This company then ran an ad campaign discussing the "secret shame" of Herpes, generating a social stigma to help provide a ready stream of customers.

I’m so glad to see that I’m not the only one that sees the mind manipulation pharmaceutical companies hold. Yes, many pharmaceutical drugs are helpful, but there’s ALWAYS a secondary repercussion, and it’s not always unintentional in my opinion. Money is the ultimate goal for the greedy pharmaceutical companies. They are responsible for many of the suffering. 😢

I have had hsv-1 since I was a teenager. In my younger days I had a lot of outbreaks. I am 62 years now and I haven't had any outbreaks for the last 7-8 years. Doctors says that beeing exposed for strong sun is a trigger. I am from Scandinavia ( northern part of Europe)and had the most outbreaks when I was living there. Now I live in the tropics (south east Asia) and I love to sunbath and are therefore exposed to very strong sun an UV radiation. So it's a little weird that I don't have any outbreaks anymore. I am much more happy with my tropical lifestyle, so I wonder if a less stressful lifestyle with few worries contribute to lesser outbreaks.

I had chicken pox as a child and my mother who had not had it before caught it from me. She suffered much more as an adult with chicken pox. About ten years later my mother started to get incidents of being clumsy, tripping and dropping things. This was diagnosed as multiple sclerosis. It was a very slowly progressing form of MS and she was able to cope for a long time using a wheeled walking frame. I strongly suspect that her MS was caused by the chicken pox infection. When she was age 90 she had significant mobility problems, so I changed jobs to be closer and my wife and I moved in with her to look after her. She had a fairly rapid decline over three years and died from a stroke in 2015 aged 93.

A woman in my community married a guy with herpes 2. He didn't tell her about it before marriage. It wasn't long until she had outbreaks so severe, it damn near incapacitated her, plus it obviously affected her future sex life. She _sued_ him for not disclosing it, and won a substantial settlement. Not enough money in the world for someone to go through what she did.

I've had HSV 2 for 42 years. I reached a stage of infrequent breakouts after 4 or 5 years until I'd go a couple years without a breakout. When I got Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma 5 years ago I was sure that the chemo treatments that obliterated my white blood cells would activate HSV 2 but I didn't have a single outbreak. Oddly, this past year I have had multiple outbreaks. I have no idea why the change in frequency - no illnesses or stress factors. I've taken acyclovir each time to shorten the duration, now I'm wondering if I need to let the outbreak run it's course and let my body strengthen my immune response to the virus? ugh... why the hell haven't they found a cure - or at least a vaccine to protect people from getting this annoying disease - the practical me assumes it is because it is a crafty difficult virus, the cynical me thinks it is because pharmaceutical companies make more money of treatments than they do cures.

My mom gave me the Herp back on the late 70's, I'll never forget not wanting to give her a kiss goodnight in the living room before she went bowling, then BOOM. I used to get many outbreaks for the next 10 years, probably enhanced by my older sister telling me to treat the open sores with rubbing alcohol and actively rubbing salt into them. I learned relatively quickly that was not a good idea, and by 15 if I didn't get chapped lips the outbreak was very very rare. I think it's been over 30 years since I've experienced one, and in 40 years only 2-4 occurrences. Yes, I have a ton of lip balm, because I'll go buy one on the road no matter how many I have at home already if I feel my lips are going to dry enough to crack.

HSV 2 carrier here. The primary infection was a bitch. It only got better after I got valacyclovir. Over the years since that time I've had may be 2 or 3 flare ups, which have been milder and more tolerable than the primary infection. A trigger for my flare ups seems to be stress. I've made my peace with having this virus inside my body that will be with me for the rest of my life.

I can feel a tingling at the position in my lips where the outbreak will be 1-3 days before an outbreak. I noticed I could slow it down with desinfection somewhat and sometimes prevent it. Honey helped somewhat to alleviate the pain, but rarely prevented an outbreak, also a hazzle to use. Only thing that seems to help is Niveau care sensitive. My outbreaks are not as common currently, but when I put it on the tingling face skin part, the moisturization seems to prevent lesion and outbreaks.

Thank you for this informative video. I've had cold sores ever since I can remember, even as a very young child. They were bad back then, starting on my lower lip and developing into hundreds of pus sores all down my chin. They hurt like hell. Over time, those went away, but became extremely painful, and frequent cold sores or fever blisters on my top or lower lip, lasting for weeks. I'm old now, and still get them. They've made a lot of my life miserable, but now at least I have the rx pill that you mentioned, that I take as soon as I feel that familiar tingling, and it helps prevent them from developing fully into those ugly, painful sores. Thank goodness I've never had the genital ones.

Firstly, I’d like to commend you for tackling a topic on sexually transmitted infections. It’s still so taboo in our culture that it prevents people from getting tested. Secondly…I have a couple of questions: 1. Are there other types infections that stay dormant in the ganglion? Or is this one unique, 2. How does HPV genital sores differ from HSV 3. How would you go about testing is someone doesn’t have open sores.
@theanatomylab
@theanatomylab Жыл бұрын
Chicken pox is very similar, and the virus will remain dormant for years, and then someone can have a reactivation, which is called shingles or herpes zoster. HPV causes a different type of lesion, warts. You can do antibody testing through a blood draw if there are now active sores/lesions. Hope that helps!

@spazmat123 if there are no open sores or obvious symptoms of HSV, you can insist that your doctor test for it. They normally discourage testing unless you have outbreaks or lesions because the test can produce false positives. The University of Washington (Seattle) has a research lab specifically for HSV, and will send the test kit free of charge, you just have to find a lab that will do the blood draw, spin it, and send it back to the university for testing.

Blood test is possible 3 month after believed exposure. This is on account of three body needing to build antibodies up before a blood test will show it. Either test the blisters at the beginning or wait 3 months (herpes purgatory).

My first and only real outbreak started out with what I imagine testicular torsion feels like, noticed some purple lines spider-webbing on part of my shaft, then the sores. As the proud owner of the two primary forms of this virus I am happy to hear your informed talk on this matter. A question lingers in my mind however. Are others susceptible to catch either form from me even while I am not experiencing an active out break? Had “fever blisters” as a youngster and young adult,,, as I’ve aged those have virtually become non existent. Caught the genital form later in life. Initially the blisters were rather widespread on lower abdomen and upper thighs and of course genitalia. Further outbreaks seem confined to simply genitalia and are sparked by all the reasons mentioned in the video. Nothing to be alarmed or ashamed of. I’ve seen estimates in the range of 65% of all humans have one or the other virus and never experience an outbreak. Knew a gal once who would get an outbreak cluster of blisters appearing on the small of her back. She suffered so much shame, for naught imho.
