As a punk/metalhead who grew up in a hip hop family, it’s interesting to see this discussion. Maybe it’ll go the way Rock has it exists and is strong but underground. mainstream doesn’t = good and record sales don’t mean shit when it comes to art. But what Hip Hop use to stand for in it’s early years is very lost, and also sorta like Rock it’s inability to accept new ideas may be it’s downfall.

Rock is like that for a reason though... The reason is that rock divides attention between musical prowess and vocals. If we look at popular music over time. We see trends moving AWAY from musical technicality and prowess. Non-musicians can still feel consistent driving rhythms. And non-musicians use words, so they can relate to vocals and verbal messages. People don't need musical prowess at all in their songs. They simply want driving rhythms and vocals they can sing along with. . This is why orchestral music would also be considered "underground" (no words, entirely musical prowess) or even "dead" for most people that don't even know that new orchestral music is still being composed and performed. And why popular music has moved towards simple rhythms, simple melodic lines, and catchy vocal choruses. . All of this leads me to believe hip hop will never die. It's literally just words and rhythm. Unless the music industry just stops releasing hip hop... it's not going to die. It's one of the perfect dumbed down genres for non-musicians to latch onto. Vocal EDM is another big one.

Yup. Modern Pop Music is very fake and Hip Hop is following that lead. It feels very manufactured to make a quick buck. I love the meme, Beyonce's #1 singe: 6 Writers, A band, And all the accolades. Queens Hit single: 1 writer, Freddie Mercury. Now I won't trash Beyonce, but that formula is dangerous. If a musician is only as good as the team of writers, when their popularity drops off those great writers will start writing for a new hot act. This is also why artists that write their own music and go big can make comebacks. They control the effort and investment in their next album.

@@riffbwit’s not necessarily a death knell though. Like, I’m a country fan (I listen to other genres too though). For an example in that genre, George Strait never wrote his own music. He also put out a new album every year from 1981 all the way to the late 2000s. Every single one of those albums was successful. Reason being: he wasn’t the songwriter, but he had a good taste in which songs to choose, and he called the shots on what the music would sound like. The end result is a distinctive image that worked across decades. And that applies beyond just country. As long as the artist still has control and a vision for what they want to accomplish, it doesn’t matter who’s writing the songs. Of course, it might be different for folk/singer-songwriter artists, and most smaller artists that don’t get heavy label support won’t have other songwriters to call on, but for the bigger acts it’s definitely true

I also think he respected the craft and honored the writers knowing it wasn't his own stuff. It doesn't really change my mind. I think the saddest part in my opinion is that the whole 2010s wave of SoundCloud rappers could've destroyed the labels power, but instead they ended up perpetuating it because it's what they thought they had to do. these dudes were getting MASSIVE off mixtapes and songs that they released independently, if they had stayed independent the labels would've starved because it was the biggest thing of that time. if the biggest artists in the biggest wave of music don't sign then the labels are gonna suffer. but that's just not how shit panned out.

@@MrColdwilliamnah that the era when authenticity died is the 2016 (Lil yachty,Lil Pump,Xxx era) at that point it was all about aesthetics….the 2010-2014 era was the most genuine because these guys were dropping free mixtapes that sounded nothing like each other…Tyler , A$ap , Joey Bada$$ , Chance The rapper etc sounded nothing like each other & around 2013 there was the Chicago Drill movement….that was from the street not the labels…now the labels sign these new drill rappers straight off the block because they understand it’s an image/aesthetic that could be sold but at the time of the Chicago drill it wasn’t until chief Keef started blowing up that labels started to take notice….back then chief keef had labels running after him because they were playing catch up when it came to what was hot in the streets…now they take some random drill rapper off the block give him a bunch of chains , cars & expensive clothes then let him go back to the hood…& whatever happens if he gets shot , locked up…or just gets into drama the label will cash out….& they know some random hood rapper that’s taking drugs , hanging with gang members is bound to eventually get in trouble…so they’re creating industry plants because the labels are back in control but hip hop is declining because people are starting to see through these aesthetics the labels created just like in 2010 when hip hop moved from MTV & CD’s to blogs , KZbin etc mainstream hip hop was in decline at the time independent mixtapes were extremely popular…now it’s different because everyone listens to music on streaming platforms…& people discover new artists through tik tok or Instagram..so more artists should stay independent & not fold to the labels as soon as you get a nice offer…but that’s easier said then done most independent artists are broke…so the key is to not be in a vulnerable position where the label can sway your opinion with a check…knowing you could get a bigger piece of the pie if you’re just patient…but artists are scared to lose the buzz so they fold & sign as soon as the offer is interesting…artists should focus on how to create a buzz , maintain it & how to monetize your music , how to actually get paid etc create a team to help with the promo etc if more independent artists get a buzz & decide to stay independent…the labels will be in a vulnerable position just like during the 2010-14 blog era

The popularity of the genre isn’t declining at all, but hip hop in the 2020s has been disappointing so far IMO. The best way I can put it is that I think hip hop needs a lot of young artists to step up big time, and not with their sales, but with the actual quality of the music. I can name at least 6 individual years in hip hop where we got more albums I view as “classic”, or “great” than we’ve gotten in the entirety of the 2020s decade so far(and for those of you who don’t realize how big a deal that is, keep in mind we are 3 and a half years into the decade already). That is a serious problem, yet you’d be called an old-head for pointing it out. There are obviously still a bunch of artists making great music in current hip hop, but we are in a much worse position with the genre than we have been for a very long time.

Blacky you’re missing something.. since these labels are so focused on turning a profit, the art of music itself has suffered. People are sick of the same choppy flows, trap beats, etc. they need to be pushing real artists that make GOOD music. Not saying that the top artists out now aren’t capable of making great music.. a rapper that I really like, Watsky (started off doing spoken word poetry, then got into making music with his friends, who are musicians and producers), collaborated with T-Pain on his recent album and the song is so good. It's called "What's The Move?" I'm glad they collabed because Watsky's songs all sound very different, and T-Pain is known to experiment with music. Watsky definitely exists outside the industry (stays underground, only plays at venues he has a special connection to, etc) but he is someone those in the industry should strive to be on the musical creativity front. Watsky is no TikTok audio 😂

Excellent video. I've been listening to hip-hop since '94 ("old head"). I remember when hip-hop was on a roll during the 90s & early 2000s. I had a problem with hip-hop when it went from reality rap to bling-bling/MTV heavily commercialized in the early-mid 00's where the music was slowly becoming disposable & easily recycleable. By 2006 and beyond hip-hop was getting worse with each year and I think the labels were mostly responsible for pushing the trash we got back then. Now fast forward 2023, the lack of quality artists & albums in the mainstream are few & far in-between because a lot of the artists are pushing hoe rap, killing opps, or making it cool to be a drug addict. This is what's being pushed in the forefront of mainstream rap. Then half of the new generation can't rap ir or they sound like another artist. Everybody don't belong in the rap game.

As a guy that mostly listens to heavy metal, this is exactly what happened to metal in the early 90s. Eventually it will cycle back around as the suits find they make less cash off throwing new artists to the wolves each year.

Yeah very similar. Nirvana knocked heavy metal out overnight bringing punk mainstream and then evolved some more and got heavier for a while and that eventually faded out. Then the old rap style got knocked out by Lil Wayne style and devolved past that to what it is now and is fading away because everything has been done at this point. They're out of ideas and just mumble about drugs and shit. Just like every genre after their prime they will stay good in the underground from here on out but mainstream is going to evolve and probably older genres/styles will have to make some comebacks. That's all that's left now for the new generations.

I think hiphop hit such a high peak from 2016-2019 with the whole SoundCloud era its kinda hard now for artists to do something bigger than that. Its hard to outdo something that was so popular. Artists are in a creatuve rut right now and dont know what direction to take the music. So yes hiphop is dying but i think this is something thats actually needed and will have a very positive effect in the longrun. This hiphop death will cause 1 of two things. Either a new revolutionary artist will rise and change the sound of hiphop into something new or a new genre will rise. Either way its a win win cuz we will get something new and fresh out of this.

This is a trend I’ve been noticing too over the last 8 months or so. Hip-Hop doesn’t have that hold on people anymore and have moved on. Not 100%, but are supporting less and less. I’ve been a Billboard chart follower since the late 80’s, and we’re almost back to 1987 standards in terms of chart positions. And for the detractors, the charts DO matter. It tells us what the people are actually listening to combining radio play, physical sales, digital sales, streaming and KZbin. Hip-Hop and English speaking Pop are losing BIG TIME this year. Country, Regional Mexican music and K-Pop are on the rise in the U.S…. What does that mean? If I see it, the record companies see it and will re-prioritize which artists to sign and/or invest in. This CAN be a good thing though. By dropping a lot of the mediocre to awful signees out there, we should get better new artists and music in the next few years. Is Hip-Hop really dying? Yes… but it’s not too late for it to be brought back to life 😁✌️

I'm sure I can speak for everyone when I say that even before I watch this video that we all know why its dying. Social media + greedy corporations + payola etc killed creativity. Being a kid in the 90s and maybe a few of the younger ones born in the early 2000s might remember the last era of the creative music being publicly put out on radio , tv etc. There's so many artists constantly flooding the social networks and everyones only doing it to be famous now or go viral. Also to what you said at the end about albums. 100% correct, this new era don't care anymore to sit down and listen to an album maybe skim through and find a few (beat wise) that stand out and ignore the rest. As a person that makes music and has seen the ups and downs of music and being someone that used to want to be in the mainstream it was a mood killer but now like you said, you have to stay true to who you are.

It's definitely a music industry issue now rather than just hip hop. It's ironic because executives have been complaining about not being able to find breakout artists that last and yet have no interest in developing the artists they currently have signed. Most kids get signed off of virality and get thrown off a cliff and even artists with a lot of critical acclaim don't get a push because it's not "marketable." Even people like Kendrick and Cole had to make a lot of pop concessions to actually be able to make and release projects they thoroughly took their time with.

I’m not a musician but I live and breathe music. It’s kind of saddening to lose faith is an art form that used to be my escape. Mainstream artists / artists pushed by labels aren’t making the most memorable tracks anymore. I love coming across new artists via streaming but the problem is that music is social. People who listen to music casually just wanna hear what everyone else is hearing (or they stick to the old reliable), so even when you’ve found great artists, many of those around you still won’t be receptive and it kills the vibe.

The problem is that rap was never supposed to be a standalone genre, it's a parasite genre. The golden age rappers didn't grow up listening to rap, they grew up listening to jazz, funk, rock, r&b and disco. They took samples and loops from music made by top musicians and they rapped on top of them. Today, these new rappers actually have the hubris to try and make their own beats while knowing absolutely nothing about music, and then rapping on top of those dead beats while having no lyrical gift as a rapper. It's pure concentrated trash.

I don’t think a message is more important than melody, I’m a Kanye fan, my comment was more to express how virtually NO ONE talked about the albums message like they did back during TPAB. I really don’t think it’s because the songs weren’t as catchy because you can still listen to a flat song and understand it, I truly do believe there’s been a massive culture change in rap with the prevalence of “vibe” rappers today owning over a lot of the scene. I just think it’s crazy how the mainstream really hasn’t even seen any better melodies than we’ve had in the recent past, but the lyricism has taken a back seat to the point that when something with a message comes out the only people hit by it are the people looking for it, I find that counterproductive if I look from the artist’s perspective.

In these times, Juice wrld would be viewed as a golden goose in the eyes of labels lol. He could create hits in 15 mins every single time he went to a studio and more importnatly - make you relate to it. Every freestyle could turn into a song. Shit, hes got 2k unreleased songs which I still listen to and find them so fuucking good. Damn, juice was so good so good no one comes close. Miss him.
