Minerva is actually the Roman variant of Athena the GREEK goddess of battle strategy and wisdom but it is a common mistake as the Romans copied the Greeks
@LegioXXI4 жыл бұрын
No, the most common mistake is the belief that the romans "copied" the greek. Its true that Greece had an influence on latin culture (they had influence on almost everything by having colonies all over the Mediterranean and spreading their culture via syncretism), but the roman mythology is completely separate from the greek one, with own legends, origin stories, heroes (godly) locations and the relationship from the gods towards each other. Especially seen after Rome conquered Greece. The Romans actually still built additional, separate greek temples afterwards. Greek mythology still co-existed within the Roman Empire as separate religion. This would have never happen if the only difference were the names of the gods. Saying Rome copied Greece its like saying the Japanese copied the Chinese, or that Christians copied the Jews. "Being influenced by" and "taking inspiration of" or even "based on" is not the same as plain copying. Even modern copyright differentiates this. For good reason.

In my conworld of Illte, Lord Voldemort, translated Welauneqi, is one of the gods in the Illomi pantheistic religion. He is the god of the dead and the collector of souls, the end of all life. Good video on the analysis of Lord Voldemort's name and the possible meanings of it. The majority of the names in the Harry Potter series seem to have some sort of meaning behind them that would apply to that character. Even the name of the orphanage that Tom Riddle grew up in could also have some sort of meaning. The last name of the main character in the 1941 book The Passionate Witch by Thorne Smith and Norman Matson as well as the 1942 movie I Married a Witch is Wooly which is about a mortal who marries a witch. Tom Riddle was the product of a witch marrying a muggle (mortal). Veronica Lake who played the witch in the movie I Married a Witch is blonde where that could come into play in the Fantastic Beasts films since Queenie is blonde as well. The meaning behind name of one of Harry's classmates could become clear in a future Fantastic Beasts film and even foreshadow a new character that will be introduced in FB 3. The name of the main character in the British version of Bell, Book and Candle is Anthony and he is put under a love spell by a witch who falls in love with him and in the 1920s generally an illegitimate child would take their mother's last name so Anthony Goldstein could foreshadow a child that is born to Queenie out of wedlock whose father would be a muggle. Sir Henry Tonks is the name of the facial injury artist who drew before and after pictures of soliders who underwent plastic surgery during WWI. and Tonks in Harry Potter is a metamorphagus who can change human shape at will, which is something a plastic surgeon can do permanently.

The etymology of Harry Potter names is so interesting. My personal favourite is Regulus Black. Regulus is a star in the constellation Leo, aka the Lion. I've always taken this as a hint that Regulus could have been sorted into Gryffindor, but perhaps, similar to Harry choosing to be placed in Gryffindor despite the hat wanting to place him in Slytherin, Regulus chose to be placed in Slytherin, after seeing the way his parents treated Sirius for being placed in Gryffindor. That's my theory, anyway. After all, his actions regarding the locket show us that he was quite brave.
@MountainFisher2 жыл бұрын
Regulus' middle name? Arcturus, alpha star of the Bootes constellation. Bellatrix of Orion, Andromeda a constellation and a galaxy. Sirius, easy brightest star in the night and his uncle Alphard in the Hydra constellation along with Rastaban (Lestrange) of the Draco Constellation and his son Scorpius. Pollux Black was grandfather to Sirius. Then there is Neville's great uncle Algie short for Algieba also in Leo. Neville's grandmother I bet Rowling didn't know, Augusta is a main belt asteroid. Here is an odd one, Tom Riddle's mother Merope one of the Pleiades stars. Cassiopeia Black was a member of the House of Black and Sirius’ great-aunt. Delphini is the daughter of Voldemort and Bellatrix Lestrange (according to The Cursed Child, does it count?). In astronomy, Delphinus (Latin for “the dolphin”) is a northern constellation.

For a channel about Harry and you don’t know this… the name voldemort. The name is a curse that let him know where you are exactly and can teleport to your location. That’s why it’s not spoken….
@ΧΙΗΙΧ4 жыл бұрын
In Dutch 'vol' is full, 'de' is the and 'moord' (which is spoken the same as mort) is murder, so it sounds like weird way to say full of murder. But in Dutch 'vul' means to fill and it sounds a bit the same. And voel (oe makes an English u/oo/ou sound) means feel. So if a Dutch speaker would here Voldemort, they would first here a grammatically incorrect 'full the murder' then think he/they meant 'fill the murder' and possibly think of 'feel the murder'. So that's mennacing, and not at al what Rowling thought of, and you do really have to think it through and I don't know what I am getting at with this...
