He was technically the dark arts teacher and I'm pretty sure that he faced his greatest fear A LOT during that one year in that chest. A death eater being the dark arts teacher instead of him may be one of his biggest fears too. He catched them all

Might it be possible that, the reason why Dumbledore didn't allow Snape to teach the subject for all those years, despite his intelligence and considerable insight into Dark Arts, was because he was saving Snape's turn for a truly desperate time? Snape's biggest fear was failing Lily. We see that in his worst memory. That was the year Snape learned that Harry had to die. And there was nothing he could do about it. On top of that he has to deal with Harry nearly killing draco with a spell Snape invented. You could argue being exposed was another one of his fears. Or simply dealing with the consequences of his past actions. Snape delt with all of that in that year.

Snape HATED Harry from day 1. Which makes sense. He wondered what kind of boy Harry would be. Loving, kind and shy like his mother perhaps. But instead Harry struts around with his friends, showing off his scar and breaking every rule going, just like his father, James. Its only better in the film, when Snape says "Anyone would think the three of you are.... up to something." Harry is giving him a death stare and Snape's face changes to a "i hope the dark lord kills you" expression. I sometimes wonder if Snape was playing both sides at this point. He only joined The Order to save Lily, who died. So he wants revenge for her death. But against who? Volie for killing her? Or Albus for failing to protect her? He could be thinking "Whichever side wins im screwed. If Albus wins, Harry will die. If Voldermort wins, Harry will die." Remember, Albus even told him that Harry had to die "you're raising him like a pig for slaughter!!!"

Just to remind you that people do accept incredibly horrible/dangerous jobs (like cleaning sewers or fixing crime scenes or body-guarding a really threatened person), just because the pay is good enough. As we are never told how much did the teachers earn, I can imagine the DADA position had a rather large premium due to the knowledge of the curse. That being said, Quirrell was the only one to die during his tenure, but both Lockhart and Crouch faced a fate worse than death (one ended up locked in a psychiatric hospital and the other one lost his soul to the dementors), Lupin and Snape died shortly afterwards, and only, as far as we know, Umbridge and Carrow survived, but completely in disgrace (one in jail and the other regarded as a dangerous racist Voldemort helper). In fact, even Moody and Voldemort ended up dead. The only one who made it out "well" was Harry himself, but in the meantime he lost his three father figures (Dumbledore, Black and Lupin), one of his best friends (Fred), and got killed but managed to come back.

Barty's greatest fear was not being able to serve Voldemort--not a fear of failing him. When he got the Dementor's Kiss, it was bye-bye to his plans to be Volde's right hand man. Although this would seem to suggest that Voldemort did not recognize he had laid a curse on the position, otherwise he wouldn't have had Barty serve in the role and get cursed. But kids do magic by accident, and we know Voldemort made Harry a Horcrux by accident (even without saying whatever words are needed to actually bind a fragment of your soul into something else), so it's possible that just his rage created the curse--like Harry's anger manifesting as blowing up Aunt Marge (who had to be professionally deflated, even after Harry ran away).

Seriously, Barty played the part perfectly. He fooled some of the best wizards and witches in the world, including Dumbledore. This is why Dumbledore did not give Snape the position sooner. It was already dangerous for Snape. Let alone having the curse of DADA over his head. Also. People say Snape suffered. When Lily died. So did he. His Emotions became deadened. This I think is also why he was able to lie to Voldemort all the time. He was emotionally numb and dead inside. The only emotion left was loathing of himself for the mistake he made and hate of Voldemort and maybe hope for revenge.

Crouch Jr. Took the duty to infiltrate hogwarts to be in Voldemort's good graces, but was stripped of everything and left as a pawn discarded. Umbridge wanted to have complete control and authority but was nearly killed by "lesser" creatures and lost all authority around her. Snape wanted to protect Harry, stayed loyal to Dumbledore and make a living in Hogwarts, but couldn't protect Harry, had to kill Dumbledore and lost his friends and living in Hogwarts. He has no regrets, at least none powerful enough to bring him back from death. Querrel however, may very well suffer the same fate as Myrtle, where his death being swept under the rug could result in him lingering around the school desperate for Someone to learn of what happened to him. Subsequently, I also believe that Sirius himself could potentially become a ghost, since he died protecting Harry, I believe perhaps his spirit may linger in hopes of protecting Harry's friends and their descendents. But those are the only characters I believe have the potential to become ghosts without being immediately expelled from the castle. @riluna3695 Жыл бұрын
I think the answer to this is a bit boring when played out, but...in a cool way? I dunno, it's confusing. Basically, Barty Crouch Jr was a _really_ good actor. Devoted to the bit, and had Moody himself under the Imperius Curse to quiz him on how he'd behave so Barty could do a better job impersonating him. Which means that Moody would have been _very_ similar as a teacher if he'd gotten to do it properly. Probably without the Malfoy Ferret incident, though, so...net loss, there :P You can kinda see this for yourself in book 5 when we meet the real Moody as part of the Order and he's just....exactly the same as the fake one. Overall I think it would be the same experience but with a calmer, less childish (and more paranoid) Moody. But really, BCJ is kind of insane when you learn what all he did in his life. Dude was a badass, it's a shame he went dark.
@jokerfan52fun Жыл бұрын
@@riluna3695 I wonder if the real moody would have done the unforgivable curses on them. Especially in the book when he was doing the imperius curse on them.
@riluna3695 Жыл бұрын
@@jokerfan52fun I actually suspect he would. Fake-Moody claims that Dumbledore himself wanted the unforgivables taught two years early, and while he could be lying, it's very unlikely. For starters, every student was talking about how amazing that class was. There's no way it didn't reach the ears of Dumbledore or McGonagall, so if they hadn't actually authorized that, they'd come down on him pretty quick. Dumbledore also has reason to be teaching these spells early, since he thinks Voldy could come back any moment now that Pettigrew's loose. And exposing people to the imperius curse in a safe environment is a pretty good idea, especially for the purposes of teaching them to break out, if they're capable of it. So really I think Barty was doing everything by the book, with the possible exception of giggling like a madman as he did so. Ironically, he was genuinely one of Harry's best teachers, despite being a villain. Too good at playing your part, Mr. Crouch :P

Actually, I think it's not - somewhat ironically because of the first known circumstantial evidence: Quirrell. When he "signed on the dotted line" to become DODA teacher, he was already overpowered and possessed by Voldemort. Voldemort already had already exploited his worst fears BEFORE signing the contract. If anything, the curse/ jinx by the time of becoming DODA teacher would have needed to backfire against Voldemort's greatest fear. Now, even if assume that Voldemort recognized a mistake about his own curse there and then: Why would he later want Snape to assume that position?

You know a really crazy thing I just thought of..... if Tom Riddle wasn't so full of himself during those school days, he might've taken a few minutes to ask one of the ghosts about death, like Harry did. I don't think the bloody Barron would've answered his questions, but I can see the Frier answering his question. If he had talked to one of the ghosts, it might have relieved some of the fear he had about death. If he had just took a slight interest in what happened to history of magic teacher, he might have put together that if he died, somehow, he could've come back as a ghost...attach hiself to Hogwarts, and influenced all the students attending... he might have even got to teach his favorite subject..DADA. And having gotten over his fear of death, there would be no reason for horcruxes, or a least, no more than one.... and without the horcruxes, his soul wouldn't have been ripped apart so many times. He would've had most if not all of his soul.... And I don't think the Wizarding World would have survived the first war. I think a Voldermort with his full soul is pretty much unbeatable. Think he would've been too powerful.

The magic seems to work along the ways of science. They're constantly learning on top of creating. Possibly not even creating just discovering the means to create. Like Severus Snape and is Half-Blood Prince spells. He didn't necessarily create them, but he did discover them. Which leaves nearly infinite possibilities regarding magic. It's like a blueprint and that's kind of how I've established how Magic works. First you have to be a proper conduit, Muggles are not proper conduits so that's why they can't perform magic, then you have to have the proper knowledge of the basic principles to perform it efficiently. From there your imagination and willingness to attempt things be they good or bad leads the way to the aptitude and perceived greatness of who is performing the magic. A job can be jinxed because it's altering the Fate around the subject. It might even be a jinx on the classroom and not necessarily the subject.

I always assumed that Voldemort didn’t actively jinx the position but the jinx manifested. Like when Harry blew up his aunt, I think even adult wizards can’t completely stop emotional magic. Going even deeper, here's a possibility: Voldemort had been musing on his dark plan to rule the magic world before his final application to the defense against the dark arts position. Rejection is what locked in his commitment to that plan. Setting this jinx on the position would disrupt all of Hogwart's students' learning in the class. In other words, Voldemort strategically sabatoged the ability of any new students at Hogwarts to effectively learn to defend against the dark magic that he now knew he'd one day bring to the whole magic world. So it might not have just been his wounded ego, but also a calculated long-term strategic move to weaken the new generation of magicians, that motivated his decision.
