"History is H.O.T. right now," Dr. Karen Cox explains. When looking at recent events, like the Unite the Right rally that took place in August 2017 in Charlottesville, VA, history helps shape our understanding. History can explain the importance that impacts current events and provide meaning beyond facts and dates that influence events today. Karen was born in West Virginia and grew up in Greensboro, NC and is a professor of history at UNC Charlotte. Karen is also an award-winning historian and author, having written three books, in addition to numerous essays and articles on southern history and culture. Karen is a national expert on Confederate monuments and uses her her historical expertise to write on contemporary issues and share her knowledge with the broader public. Karen is a first generation college graduate. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

where she gets to the point 5:28 6:38 7:30 - basically states that learning history is "like having the receipt" where you can know what happened when it happened and why.

Most of the talk was just about her , while she should've focused on why history as a scientific field matters .

Ig she tried to tell why history is important through an example of herself. I basically got what she wanted to tell. I understood that why history is important. No offense but if you concentrate more you will see that she is not only talking about herself. Just concentrate a little more

Knowing the past and not necessarily the interpretations of the past, is necessary. Get into the documentary evidence. There is little attempt by modern historians to leave their bias aside when they interpret history. Instead of understanding within the context of the times when a historical event occurred, a moral judgement through presentism is taking place. This is pernicious and should be eliminated in the historical profession. Return to at least the attempt of objectivity, historians.
