I'd say you can make a similar argument for George Orwell's 1984 It is a great book that does have an apt warning about government control, but it is used for everyone from Burnie to Trump. We just like to use 1984 and Hitler because saying it is immediately discrediting. Using them is the conversational equivalent of punching someone in the face during a game of rock paper scissors and saying you won because of your "tactical skill"
@gabrielfraser2109
@gabrielfraser2109 5 жыл бұрын
I've definitely noticed those conversational punches, in several other areas of politics as well. Let me give you an example - Many people have called Trump's remarks on Mexican and Muslim immigration "racist", despite neither of those categories encapsulating any specific race. People will justify this by saying that in the US, those categories go hand-in-hand with brown skin, but that's really quite a weak argument. Those remarks aren't racist, they're xenophobic, and xenophobia is exactly as bad as racism - it is prejudice against other people based on traits that they haven't chosen, and that have nothing to do with their moral character. Logically and rationally, Xenophobia is just as serious an accusation as Racism. So if Xenophobia is the more appropriate term, why do people insist on calling such sentiments racism? I think it's because racism has a better-established history in the US, it's a word that's been thrown at slave owners, Klan members, and other clearly despicable people, it conjures up images of lynchings. That word carries an enormous amount of weight, while Xenophobia is nowhere near as heavy on the American conscience. Speaking of 1984, the only thing more annoying is Idiocracy. "Hurr Durr it's become a documentary", everyone seems to think they're the only intelligent person left in a world full of idiots.

If someone has access to time travel and thinks about killing Hitler (or anyone), they should not have access to time travel. Fortunately, they'd just create a parallel timeline and would be locked into it (or any others they create by trying to get back to their original timeline) so we wouldn't be affected. I'm not defending Hitler, I'm just saying that killing anyone is wrong, but also going back in time could have drastically unintended consequences. I'll bet that, when that person leaps forward to the present day of the new timeline they created, there are A LOT MORE genocidal, fascist governments, maybe the USA even is one, because there was no example to learn from about not committing genocide, without Hitler.

Regardless of that it doesn’t make communism any lest tyrannical, oppressive, and murderous. Furthermore, in the 20th century alone communism killed around 96 million people with a margin of error of 4 million people, according to the Black Book of Communism and other sources. Even if that specific number is disputed, it’s widely agreed communism killed around that many millions of people. I wrote a paper on Holodomor. The total deaths caused by it are highly disputed. Very little data is available regarding this because of the secrecy that was typical to the Soviet Union. The highest count that is given historical credibility is 12 million as expressed by Robert Conquest in the 'Harvest of Sorrow. As for most estimates, Jared is correct. Almost all other credible estimates suggest that Holomodor resulted in 3-9 million casualties.

Another great piece. Some points to consider: 1 - at least one historian has noted that the Holocaust went almost forgotten by a generation due to Hollywood's (and the worlds) disinterest: they were sick and tired of living with WWII and wanted to move forward (hence the abundance of Sci-Fi and escapism post WWII); 2 - I remember when the History channel was new, and was referred to as the "World War II" channel, but there were other factors: they needed content and there was an abundance of WWII footage, documentaries, etc. already in existence and CHEAP to acquire; it was a "popular war", with many veterans still living; 3 - while Hitler may have killed 17 million one should also consider the proportion-to-population: Pol Pot for example, killed about 25% of the Cambodian population. Hitler, of course, started a war that engulfed the world, etc., but you get the idea. 4 - Hitler is easiest to remember, but the Japanese killed millions (estimated 6 million during WWII alone) and no one compares anyone to Hirohito, possibly because at the end of the war he and the Imperial Family were protected by MacArthur, and went on to rule Japan until his death in 1989. Them's the breaks. Thanks again!

Top notch video, the disturbing truth is that while Hitler is still vilified, so many people are not really educated as to why Hitler, and other totalitarians like him, were so bad during the first half of the 20th century. Not really helped that the media and politicians influence people to have a very general and very superficial interpretation of what transpired before, and during Hitler's regime. I partly blame the education system, it absolutely fails to teach people about how and why Hitler, the Nazis, and other totalitarians were so bad. It's really no wonder that some people will call anyone Hitler who is slightly right of Stalin (as the saying goes at least, Stalin being Left is debatable). I'd say that people's cartoonish interpretation and reaction to ideas involving Hitler is actually contributing in favor of Neo-fascists.

Yes, and the massive deaths in the Congo were not so much a deliberate choice by King Leopold as they were poor management and perverse incentives, mostly unintentional and enabled by the rampant criminality of the local population that were hired as soldiers. King Leopold gets a bad rap for what was done by others, and as it happens things were just as bad in at least some neighboring French colonies, but Leopold gets the blame because he did not try to cover up what was happening like the French government did.

Short answer-People, especially extreme hypocrites, are always comparing others to Hitler.

The interesting thing is, our culture has had a "most evil bastard" to compare crappy people to for way before Hitler. Before that it was common to refer to shitty people as "Pharaoh" in reference to the biblical story of Moses. So it's not exactly a new concept and once someone even shittier takes the mantle it'll change hands yet again.

First of all, thank you, I enjoyed your work a lot! There are things we get so used to that we don't even take a second to analyze. However, it's interesting how you made a tricky analogy yourself in the video, comparing, beneath the word of “historical crimes", the iberian conquest and colonization of America with the Shoah. As a spaniard and historian, I'd like to note that, far from the nazi crimes, the enormous amount of native people (whatever should be the precise number) dead or demographically “dissapeared” from iberian America while the colonial period weren't mostly “killed”. There wasn't a plan made to exterminate the natives, but a wide number of circumstances (diseases, famines, internal wars, natality dicrease...), originated by the conquest, but not prepared or even wished, that led to this so unfortunated tragedy. No one is doing any favour to historical memory and accuracy with such comparations. I just wanted to note that. Appart from this, I repeat, good work! :)

I'm kinda sad the swastika is the default Nazi logo. It's a waste of a symbol.

as a side note- one of the reasons holocaust documentaries/films in particular rose during the 80's and 90's is that almost all of the nazi camps were located within the Soviet block prior to WWII. Access to them for research purposes, especially by those in the States & Western Europe, was either denied or heavily restricted. In the 80's we saw the grip of the USSR weaken around Eastern Europe, and its subsequent collapse in the 90's, leading to greater access to information about the holocaust overall (of course alongside the stories of survivors. We could put peoples memories to a specific place and time)
