My theory is that Horizon is still a game for a very specific public… those who like traditional the Witcher 3 style, with heavy plot points and lots of RPG elements like crafting and armours and weapons. The “issue” is that horizon is incredibly accessible. Which make it so people who are not the target audience try this game out. And then they get frustrated. Some people complained of it being boring, which I guess is because of the rpg elements, like crafting and upgrading gear. For those people who came to horizon just for the story, it might have felt too grindy. On the other hand, the game also follows the approach of a tomb raider/uncharted game where the characters inner dialogue is constant and serves to help you get through the story more efficiently, without getting stuck unnecessarily. Now this, for those players who like a more “explore by yourself approach” might have been frustrating or too guided. Now for players like me, who like all those things (great story, lots of rpg elements, and constant inner dialogue), it’s the perfect game. If I could make a game with everything I like, that would horizon forbidden west.

@ Yeah well I know quite a lot of people had issues with the over abundance of inner dialogue which personally I didn't had issue with because I'm so dumb at times so it was quite helpful for me.😄 But yeah funny thing is that she actually talks to herself as you can see her mouth moving unlike in the Batman Arkham games for example were Batman talks a lot to himself but in his head which is way less cringe imo I must admit but also he does it WAY less than Aloy in Forbidden West so yeah. Although now on pc there is a mod to lessen the inner dialogues a ton and it removes around 900 lines of dialogue or something, it can't remove all of the inner dialogues though because a lot quests actually require Aloy to speak to herself and then when she is finished with her tomfoolery the quest can continue.

Yeah, I enjoyed the game. Honestly, didn't understand why people were hating on it. Was it game of the year? No, but it was still better than most open world games released in the past few years. I do agree they fumbled the Faro story Arc. I'm assuming they ran out time an had to cut it down, because when I finished that quest I was like, "that's it? Dude is alive and that's what they went with?" They should have saved the Faro being alive arc for DLC in my opinion. During the main game we find what we need to from a Faro bunker not thee Faro bunker, but in the expansion we actually get to confront him. Then again, the whole endgame kinda felt half baked, but not so bad it ruins the game.
@saviourself6876 ай бұрын
The core game, gameplay loop, mechanics, graphics, world building etc are all solid. It's the politics and the purposeful insertion of "modern day". And I say that as a person who recently 100%'d Ultra Hard on my first playthrough on PC (didn't play on the PS). I don't care that Aloy is female (my favourite version of Mass Effect is Femmeshep for the excellent voice acting by Jennifer Hale), I don't care that the guy that brought it all down was a white male. It's the constant reinforcing that men are either evil/corrupt, bumbling fools or second strings (or a combination of the above) eg. Evil, Faro, Londra, CEO, the Quen inquisitor, the corrupt Oseram boss in Chainscrape. Gormless second strings, Varl and Erend. Compare this to the females, who are far more competent when evil (Regalla, Tilda) or generally bossy (Zo, Dekka, Seyka, most Oseram women) or just stupidly OP (The Enduring). And the worst of all is Aloy who varies between arrogant to a fault, sarcastic, abrasive or insulting. Classic example, Aloy decides to blow up the Bulwark. Instead of challenging the chief to single combat or some other method of forcing him to comply with the chiefs requirements, she leaves an entire village without it's primary defense while asking for their best warriors to be sent to the Kulrut, even though the bad guys and their machines are literally a couple of hundred meters down the road... Tekkoteh is bad man and Aloy is smort girl, that's all you need to know... If you enjoy the game, great because I generally enjoyed it as well, but it's very hard to deny that modern politics has been crammed in and it's made the end result lesser than the first.

@@btbarr16 honestly having to battle Faro in the DLC as a final boss would've been not such a great move on guerillas part. since the first game, Ted was this figure that was untouchable. Someone whose presence and impact is felt a lot more by him not being physically there at all. I do agree it would've been super neat for a mini boss fight in HFW but it's understandable why that didn't happen; cause of the rating change it would've needed. But besides that little thing, the Faro tomb quest showcased the important bits. The feeling of complete isolation and loneliness despite how opulant the bunker was, how terrifying it would've been to live with someone like Ted under the same roof while knowing that theres no escape. Not from him or from the hell outside. The atmosphere was amazing. We did get to battle the Zeniths so I got my happy dose of battling someone from the Old World Edit: I want to add that stretching the Faro showdown across the game AND DLC would've felt like they're milking it. Faro, while being the big reason why everyone died, isn't the only enemy we can face. Focusing only on Ted would've been a little too boring I think. But I suppose to each their own:). I can see how investing only on him as the main antagonist would've been fun and it would invoke a lot of tension throughout but I wouldn't say it's worth it just for that. It's better that we faced a damn Horus in the DLC than Ted. I doubt even the monstrosity he ended up being could have been on par with a Horus

I LOVED how they handled Faro. The guy thought he was the most important man in the world, almost a god, WANTED to be a god/guide to the future generations, achieved immortality at the cost of his own body mutating and we don't even get to see him in person because the game is telling you HOW LITTLE HE MATTERS, he thought he was all that, instead the first person he "sees" after 1000 years is a guy that almost pukes at the sight of him and orders his death by fire
@lirian10536 ай бұрын
yeah me too. the video author's ideas are interesting, and I see how they could make some cooler, more emotional cutscenes, but I also like how despite him never understanding that he didn't outsmart everyone, in the grand scheme of things, he WAS remembered as someone who destroyed the world, tried to cover it up and fulfill his egoistical fantasies of becoming the god of the new world, and literally turned into a flesh goo. I enjoy seeing this gradual loss of humanity, starting from his character and ending with his physical form.

I think it was the right call to not have a grand battle with the Far Zeniths. They were threatening because of their advanced technology, but once their shields were stripped away, they were nobodies. Aloy and her allies, excluding Tilda, were all trained hunters/combatants; the Far Zeniths, on the other hand, were celebrities, hedge fund managers, and scientists. As soon as they lost their invulnerability, they would’ve been curb stomped by Aloy and her allies while also having to deal with a horde of machines.

So when Forbidden West came out on Steam, i grabbed it on day one. The game was just as good or even better in many ways, but also not as good in others. I think the most annoying thing for me was that many of the weapons were slower than they were in Zero Dawn with long wind up times and i felt like that Aloy's recovery time when she got hit took way longer. It seemed like machines would hit Aloy, and then the moment she would get back up, they were attacking again and it would feel like it took forever to recover from anything. I found myself yelling "GET THE HELL UP ALREADY!" more times than i would have liked. That said, the inventory system and the stash was far better than the previous game.

Your conclusion about Forbidden West actually made me think of Starfield and Death Stranding. Death Stranding is a game that starts out really slow and I probably would have quit if not for the Steam reviews that kept saying just stick with it until Chapter 3. I stuck with Death Stranding until chapter 3 and people were correct. Starfield on the other hand was a game that I kept expecting to get better. I thought it was a decent game at first, but after 25 hours into it I finally realized, "oh... this is it isn't it." Then Phatom Liberty came out, I did a whole 83 hour playthrough of Cyberpunk 2077 and Phatom Liberty. After that I decided to go back and finish Starfield and man it was jarring going from Phatom Liberty to Starfield. I went from thinking it was a decent game to realizing how outdated the gameplay felt and how uninteresting the story was.

Glad to see someone else say that to truly experience the game, you have to go through all the optional dialogue. One of the letsplayers I've watched loved the game, but said that the characters feel one-dimensional. Well, duh, if you only listen to the bare essentials to breeze through the game. Probably why Zero Dawn took me 110 hours and Forbidden West 120 hours to finish, I went through the trouble of getting 100% completion on both games and their DLCs. Really fun games.

I think Ted Faro’s fate was handled really well, personally. He was an arrogant character whose hubris led to the literal end of the world, then he went insane due to the knowledge that his decisions led to the extinction of almost all known life in the universe. In his insanity, he decided to wipe the slate clean by purging all copies of Apollo, which in some ways ruined the future of humanity and its ability to defend itself from the coming threat of Nemesis. To top it all off, Faro convinced himself that he would essentially have to become god for the next generation of humans that would roam the earth and turned himself into an abomination. I like that his arrogance, which he failed to recognize, ended up dooming him to a horrific fate as basically a giant tumor. Faro having a pathetic ending of having to survive in a bunker alone for over a thousand years as a cancerous growth with no grand ending for someone once considered to be so important was quite fitting. That’s just my opinion, though.

I am concurrently playing Horizon Dawn Zero (HDZ) and Elden Ring (ER) (I'm late to the party, I know). I go back and forth between the two, depending on my mood. Given the reviews and the hype, I thought ER would completely overshadow HDZ but I find HDZ a lot more fluid and relaxed. I also play it on hard so the combat is a little bit more challenging in a good way. I love how rewarding the exploration in ER is but other than that, it feels quite directionless (I am exploring for the sake of exploring, fighting scary bosses and collecting cool items) and sometimes, quite stilted, either because I keep dying, or the combat feels like a samey-samey dance once you've figured out the patterns and until you find other weapons/ways to take down the enemy. HDZ feels a lot better paced (in every aspect, including combat), there's a good story to drive you forward and I happen to enjoy its setting more so than ER (which sometimes feels like a patchwork of grotesque). All in all, HDZ stands its ground very well. I just wish its exploration had slightly better rewards (unique weapons/items) instead of finding everything at the merchant.

For me the situation of Faro being killed of screen and then when rebirthed faro gets killed by giant golden faro head is the best way to kill the ego top that this character had from beginning, and on top of that it gives you a chance how disgusting he looked, because i supose he wouldnt be someone pretty or a person that you can speak to, after you saw him as a clump of cells and you've heard his scream that sounded lie monster. If the game was actually good, people would praise it, and to be fair, the game did performed well, but the problem is that the game doesn't do anything great, it's just kinda mediocre in a lot of ways. Take Breath of the Wild, doesn't have the best graphics or story, but it has some very unique mechanics and some really cool concepts that other games don't have, Elden Ring also offers things other games don't, unfortunately everything in Horizons are just "okay", the combat is ok, the story is ok, the exploration is ok. The only thing I see people praising this game is the graphics, other than that, the game doesn't really have much to offer outside being a generic open world game. Right up there with Zelda, Red dead, AC black flag, and Ghost. Love love love these games. currently playing forbidden west and i love it.

Having played both HZD and HFW I can't wait for the third installment. For me the story, the characters, the world and the combat is something very close to perfection. The only two problems I get is combat against humans where their AI is kinda simplistic + the melee combos from HFW are too counter intuitive to use. The other one is progression system which simply does not offer anything in new game plus once you have maxed out all skills. The hate comes from 2 sides. First - people who call themelves 'true gamers' who play only 'difficult games' and everything else is beneath them. The launch of HFW coincided with Elden Ring and before ER launched th horizon videos were full of comments laughing at its graphics that got replaced once ER launched (with its poor performance and really poor graphics) with more general 'HFW is trash'. Funnily there was another game that was in ER window of release (the same month) that got the same treatment - Dying Light 2 - it so happened I watched HFW and DY2 playthroughs before and after ER launch and saw these comments in both. Some people somehow take it personally if 'their game' is not everyone's favourite. Second - people who learnt that women have hair on their skin in other places than a head and intimate parts - they just can't wrap their head around it. They go on a crusade against the game because they do not feel sexual arousal - I always recommend watching porn when you need a porn and do not confuse games with PEGI rating 16 with adult entertainment. The rest of rant about 'strong female character' is just a distraction - there is not much to help them - some of them will eventually grow up, meet a girl and learn that they are not machines for tending to their needs. Thanks for the video.

I’m with you on how the story handled Ted Farro. We didn’t even get a look at what he became. It would have been more impactful if Aloy faced down against the man who started all of this via a boss battle.

I mostly agree with you and I also find this game kinda underrated although it's not like i care really much at all about that because I enjoy entertainment products for myself above all and if other people enjoy it as well cool and if not whatever you know. I played Horizon Zero Dawn a first time on ps4 back in like 2019 or something and tbh I had a bit of a hard time finishing it but I finally did it and also the expansion Frozen Wilds which i found really cool, then I replayed it on pc entirely and finished it just hours before the sequel Horizon Forbidden West pc port released in February of this year and replayed it entirely on pc as well and also the expansion Burning Shores but in this case it was the first time i played it but I really enjoyed it though. I pre ordered and played Horizon Forbidden West at launch on ps5 and had a great experience although it had it's shortcomings and for me it was the image quality especially on the performance mode on ps5 because there is no way I would have played at 30fps again. That is a non issue on pc of course especially with DLAA or DLSS which i played with and I have a monster pc so yeah.😄 I mean personally what made my enjoy Horizon Forbidden West much more than Horizon Zero Dawn is the verticality and the ability to climb much more things with it's gorgeous world and of course the glider and in the end you even have access to a flying mount and also in the expansion Burning Shores you have access to a flying mount who can also go under water which is so awesome and you can bring it to the base game too ! But yeah you get it I really love this game and the franchise overall and I can't wait for the third installment for sure !

Absolutely incredible game series. I made the mistake of too much horizon however, i played HZD and Forbidden west one after another and platinumed both. I was absolutely floored with forbidden west the first play through, but going for that new game plus trophy was the killer for me. Especially on ultra hard and having to upgrade all the new game plus weapons to maximum. Thats to say that I hopped into the series late so I actually only got through playing them this year. Still looking forward to horizon 3 tho.

ugh this is the ONLY game i have put over 190+ hours into it (still gotta break 200 :P). what captivates me the most is the bow combat! I have always loved bows and arrows in videogames and this game just takes it to the next level. Also just the combat in general, every single encounter can be conquered in a number of ways. its actually amazing and if you look up youtubers that teach you the mechanics in depth and how you can take advantage of them.... wow this game is just phenomenal

I will tell you why this game so underrated and the reason is very very obvious. I started this game and it took me a while to enjoy it, AND by a while I mean nearly 15 hours. The game is slow paced the side missions are almost mandatory to get level ups and xp. If that was not all, the flying mount is gained towards the end of game. The missions take away the sense of urgency. Compared to Ghost of Tsushima the sense of urgency is basically non existing. I can keep going but that will suffice. Thanks

The gameplay against machines is so much fun! Just wish they had improved human combat further, a parry/ block and lock on (or auto soft lock on like ghost of Tsushima) would make it infinitely better to fight humans.

I never doubted Guerilla games, I love almost all their games and for a good reason. Guerilla just knows how to make a quality game. Their Killzone games were amazing. Zero dawn was amazing for a new ip and I knew Forbidden West was going to be another banger, and it was. Graphics are one of the highest, polish is one of the highest, open world design is top notch, combat is amazing(long range) and close range combat is better than the first one but still not as good as long range. This time around the side quests are even better and the character animation and voice acting are all of the highest quality. Overall I spent exactly 102 hours on the game and I still had like 30% of the map uncovered; still tons of sidequests untouched.

Horizon does attract a lot of weirdos thinking they're cool for hating the game, as it released next to 2 major releases. That is only a very small % so i wouldnt really call the series underrated. Vast majority love the series, so glad to see it expand with many more games coming :)

this game is great, if you only play the main missions. bad thing about the game is, there are "level requierment" if you want to play the main missions. Levelling requires you to play side missions & errands, which make the game bad, cause every side missions is basically the same, talk to npc, follow the trail, and fight machine (in a monotonous way). that's what make people get easily bored in this game. Not everyone is enjoying to do the same thing over and over again (tho i have no problem with it). in other words, your pace is heavily controlled, no freedom at all.
@TrollLogic6 ай бұрын
Interesting you say this as I never felt like I was forced from progressing the story because of my level. Perhaps that’s because I actively engage with the side activities/missions in between main missions naturally so the pacing felt free to me. But is it really good to play an open world game and then engage with nothing that world offers besides the main story?
@gastonsantos2586 ай бұрын
@@TrollLogic i mean, at least they can make the side missions more interesting & enganging by putting some effort & to add variations on it, not just shoot that shoot this. Look at cyberpunk’s side missions. You can enjoy the game only by playing the side missions only. And the problem at Horizon is the monotony, not in the side missions itself. It’s good for you if you can enjoy with playstyle. 🤝

Honestly, any video shining some light on Horizon as a franchise and letting people know about the good stuff the game has to offer by making solid points and giving an unbiased opinion will always get an instant Like from me. I feel so damn bad for this franchise to be overshadowed constantly due to poor release timing. Both Zero Dawn and Forbidden West are hands down among my favorite games ever. I hope the third installment gets the attention it (hopefully) deserves. Thank you for your contribution to guiding more people into the franchise. People lump this game in with Ubisoft because of some formal similarities. But there is so much more depth in this series. I also think that coming out alongside Elden Ring and Tears of the Kingdom didn't help it at all. The art design is fantastic, the enemy design is even better, and the action is novel. Each game is packed with genuinely fun things to do and the game never tries to steal your time.

The game is good. Like _really_ good. Unfortunately it was overshadowed by other games, especially Elden Ring which is also a really good game. When you're released alongside other good games, gamers become spoiled for choice and your game can end up overshadowed.
