You missed a spot. The metal plate over the soc needs to come off and new paste there. You can even pop out the copper piece on the plate and direct die cool it

You missed disconnecting the battery. Always, always, do that first when you remove the metal shield.

i have the 2nd model that came out? still the original to my understanding. released way before the lite or oled where announced. i think i got it in 2018? when pokemon eevee came out and only now ( june2023) did it started getting loud when playing tears of the kingdom on the dock, havent played it much handheld. i think it;s just the game that overheats it cause i never had this issue playing mario kart or botw.

My modded v1 switch was cleaned and reapplied the thermal paste. Holy moly that shit was dry af. The base level (directly over the chip) probably had the most leftover old paste left and what probably kept the thing going. All the other layers were practically gone lmao

I replaced all those, the chip paste under the heat shield and used K5 PRO from the big plate to the heatpipe since it's more firm and won't go over the rest of the board. Still got it hot in handled and very hot when docked. Not hot to harm me but yeah, i'm concerned about the screen and the battery at those temps. Sadly i can't misure them to properly check if it's more than 60° but comparing to my pc at 60°, i can see it should be higher when docked. The fan seems to be fine as it spins out hot air and somehow doesn't make noises when it spins during docked, which makes me think that the system still thinks it's an appropriate temp. The thermal paste i used was a 2y old MK4 (it lasts 8 years) and it was checked before i applied it, it was still in good state. What do you think? Is it normal or maybe there's something wrong?

I've changed the thermal paste on an old V1. Under the small metal plate, so on the CPU and between the metal plate and the heatsink. While I put a small thermal pad between the heatsink and the out metal shield. Console can get very warm but fan put out hot air. On an unmodified V1 the console get much less warm... So I don't get what's wrong.

I would say the console being hot is a good thing shows the heat is being pulled out. I would be worried if it didn't get hot

Brother... You didn't take the metal shield off the cpu and replace the paste under that? I'm surprised it made as much of a difference as it did without doing that

Absolutely useless unless you are removing the shim and applying paste on top of the SoC. Dont waste your time watching this. And the paste on top of the heat pipe needs to be a bit thicker like a thermal putty (the reason why nintendo uses the Pink thicker paste), your standard paste consistency wont help there. Even then, the amount of paste you used on top of the heat pipe is way too little compared to the amount Nintendo applies.

@@NasiLemakTech You went as far as removing the fan while the SoC shim is right there (can even remove the shim without removing the fan), my point is that with extra 5 mins of work, you could have definitely gained way better results! Doing this means you are improving heat transfer from the source it-self, what you did will just improve the heat transfer between the heat-pipe and back shield mostly, thats it. I can guarantee that almost all 2017 switches have dried paste by now, the dried paste under the SoC shim of your OG Switch is not transferring enough heat to the heat pipe to begin with, I'm pretty sure that you can get as low as 48-52c depending on your ambient temp in the Korok forest. GBATemp has more proven and verifiable data on this if you are interested!
