Incorrect. Air blowing onto something actually does cool it down. For example imagine a piece of metal sitting in air that is a lower temperature than the metal. The metal heats up the air around it to equalize the temperatures. When air blows past it, the heated air around the metal is taken with it so that the metal will then Cool quicker with cooler air surrounding it.

Peite I get what you are saying, but that mean that Sony knew that the upgraded hardware of the PS4 Pro will be hotter and installed a fan that could cool it down, that's their thermal solution, that's the way is intended to work. IF Sony desing the console right the chip is not overheating, therefore the chip is not forcing itself and will last for long. But if it is overheating, it's a desing flaw and an extra cooler would be a good idea. P.s. I'm not aware of the avarage PS4 Pro temps, so I don't know if it overheats or not.

The misinformation in this video is so strong I feel compelled to restate some of the comments: 1. You won't "definitely notice" if your console is running hot. Newer components "thermal throttle" reducing performance instead of dying/incorrectly rendering. 2. Circulating more ambient air into a console, when done correctly, results in a cooler operating temperature which can increase performance of components that are throttling 3. Heat dissipation in computers is heavily dependent on airflow direction, pressure and CFM. Not wanting to get too technical here, but fans and blowing air is completely relevant to heat dissipation in computers and consoles

@mattwood683
@mattwood683 4 жыл бұрын
@@theguytheguy3886 Technically speaking yes. In practice usually not much of a difference you will get more of a difference by directing cooler air towards the consoles intake or even cooling the ambient temp of the room by a few degrees. If your console is running at jet speeds just pop open the cover and use compressed air to blow all the dust out (if it's not in warranty or you just don't care). Another thing that no one seems to be taking into account is the fact that thermal paste does degrade over time losing its heat transfer abilities (not completely just loses efficiency). Buddy of mine redid his thermal paste on his computer CPU and got an 8c difference (computer is like 6 years old so take that into account). All in all its usually cheaper and easier to do things before tacking on the fans to the console, but if you are having overheating problems there might be a different issue other than just lack of airflow (however it might work there are a lot of variables that can come into play when dealing with temps in consoles and computers).
@AcidDotDrop

Nice explanation... only two flaw in your comment: 1. The X1 starts throttling at 75°C, the Switch's heat protection shuts the system down at around 67°C and cames will run generally at around 53°C with some demanding games going up to peaks at around 59°C . And before the shutdown occurs, you will be given a system warning prior to that. So your entire "overheating" arguement falls flat on its nose. 2. Circulating more ambient air and adjusting airflow direction is in fact important but you said one word that s the most important factor but you just brushed over: CORRECTLY. It's not just slamming a fan on each side and getting benefits, if it would be that easy, there wouldn't be an issue with itx cases or laptops in general. It has do be done correctly to get a benefit and home consoles are designed around their own internal cooling solutions, the only way for you to manipulate that is by either taking the system apart and altering the intended airflow ur feeding cooled air into the system... in other words, reducing the ambient temperature as a whole.

Oh Wulff Den, your entire video was based on air flow, but left out air pressure, and resistance/restriction. The vent mesh on the top of a 360 for example restricts air flow. Since the fans blow out, it'll be limited by how quickly or easily air can be sucked into the system's other vents. Slapping a fan on an intake vent to push air in will help compensate for the restrictions. It's why PCs have both intake fans AND fans blowing outwards. IE Push/Pull configurations. That said... that 360 fan that slaps on top of the existing fans was pretty silly. As for the switch, a dock with a fan on it that cools the back of the unit would be good too. Since it does radiate heat out of the back shell. And lastly, you said "so long as it's working, heat isn't a problem." but just because it isn't a problem now, doesn't mean it doesn't have lasting affects. Over time it could warp solder joints, warp plastics, and break down components. So just because it works now, doesn't mean it's good enough.

Avin French lazy bunny never said that consoles have intake fans. They stated that HAVING intake fans in the case of the 360 for example WOULD be extremely beneficial because as they stated because the internal air pressure of the 360 and some modern consoles too isnt enough to vent enough heat with just one exhaust having intakes would increase airflow in and therefore out the otherside is a good thing.

Avin French and as far as one degree....no no no my friend. The video is merely attempting to point out how these game cools fans dont do as they advertise which is in 99% of cases true. But as far as the switch for example...especially when docked... The fans on the dock help push air in.. Which allows it to more easily reach the exhaust fans...therefore allowing the exhaust to vent more heat... The difference in these things when applied correctly is substantial not a one degree difference like your implying.

If you undock your Switch then it cools down faster but if you leave it docked it can't get rid of the heat because it's totally 'wrapped' by the dock. So then it doesn't have that dramatic temperature changes you're implying. Witch could indeed crack the plastic casing...

The truth is, it helps but wont fix an actual issue that may be causing over heating. Im a computer technician with extensive knowledge on the way air pressure works on enclosed pc's. Getting the hot air out is more important then getting cold air in, so having fans suck out the hot air creates a low pressure in the console and it sucks air in everywhere air can come in, the xbox 360 however had bad cooling mounts, so if you had a bad cooling heatsink mount its gonna overheat regardless. Can it help keep the console cool, yes but not enough to fix anything. Is it worth it? Probably not, but having the console a few degrees cooler can extend its life a few years.

Consoles use PC-like hardware, but they aren't configured that way. A console generally runs at set speeds. The switch for example has two speeds for it's CPU, GPU, and RAM, and uses the lower speed in handheld mode, and gives game developers the option to use the higher speed in docked mode. There's no smooth throttling like a PC. No matter how warm your console gets, the chips keep running at the same speed, with the same performance, same framerate, until the console decides it is too hot and forces a shut down, or starts glitching out. As for intake fans, sure, maybe some of them make the chips a bit cooler, but that makes no difference to how the console runs, unless it's so hot where you are that your console regularly shuts down. Intake fans can cause problems too - the fan itself creates heat, so now the air going in to the console is a bit warmer than room temperature. Depending how much pressure it forces in to the console, the air inside the cabinet can become higher pressure - if you're in a humid environment and your air is close to saturated with water, that can force water to condense out of the squeezed air, making your computer chips wet, and crashing your console *if you're lucky*. Home dehumidifers sometimes work on this principal, by compressing air to squeeze the water out of it. Compressed gasses are also hotter - it's how heat pumps like air conditioners work. If you pump up a tire or a ball, you can notice the hose and the ball get a bit warmer, and if you blow a spray can on your hand, you'll feel the decompressing gas is cold. Exhaust fans are better for this reason too, creating that vacuum inside the case means the air entering the case is decompressing a little bit, becoming a bit cooler than room temperature while it's inside there, helping it suck more heat out of the chips.

another case of extrapolation from one's own situation to everyone else's. go live in a tropical / equatorial country and say that again. sometimes you get a 20c headstart on everyone else from idle temperatures. believe it or not, consoles are not made to operate at 40c room temperatures. i don't use these on my consoles, but i can clearly see situations where they would help. btw, 1:47 was joke, right? please tell me it was. in case it wasn't, here are some reasons where increased airflow helps cooling a system: - as more air passes, it effectively increases surface area for all components, specially the heatspreaders, since they are making contact with more air in the same amount of the. - it moves air in and out of the system faster, which means that not only the hot air gets pushed out faster, but it also means it doesn't let the heat accumulate as much inside the casing. the compound effect of those means it makes contact with more air, and that air is cooler on top of it. how can it NOT get cooler than with a slower airflow? the only way for that would be if the cpu was somehow below ambient temperature, which isn't very likely. so think for a bit before making a video. one more thing, the serial fan configuration isn't optimal but it works... i have one of those fans on my laptop and it decreases full load temperatures by a whooping 30c. yep, 30 fucking degrees celcius. simply because the external fan has a MUCH higher airflow rating than the internal one, and thus moves more air through the system faster. which again proves my previous point. sheesh. stop spreading misinformation. you had a valid point in saying these are preying on the fear of a problem that isn't there with very few exceptions, but everything else you said was garbage.

More air speed can cause more heat. It's a trade off when you're using filters on your PC. I'm not saying I know when that threshold is for these consoles. But take your computer's filter off and blow through it feeling the air coming out. It will be warm, almost hot. Now blow on your hand without the filter, it'll be cool. The faster the air the higher the pressure the hotter the air. The smaller the space the bigger the problem gets. There is also a static buildup issue with fast moving air. Basically in cooling, more air != more better. More surface area = more better.

So uh, you're mostly right... yet, more so wrong... The only reason why these things have a bad rep is because with the XBox 360, the fans actually blew INTO the console while the console's fans were trying to blow OUT. THAT is the only reason it was so controversial... Now then, in actuality... unlike what you stated, having a set of fans in front/behind another set of fans DOES ACTUALLY HELP. The key is that each set need to be spinning in the OPPOSITE DIRECTION. This increases static pressure and airflow. Don't believe me? Go look up some videos about how servers stay cool while being so paper thin (relatively speaking paper thin). The things WILL keep your console cool IF they are designed/implemented CORRECTLY. Because A) more airflow DOES help. B) the more dense that air is, the more it DOES help (in terms of amount of air, say, per square inch. not that the air itself needs to be a dense gas. just that more 'air' in a given square inch does indeed help). C) computers stay cool exactly.. and i mean EXACTLY like we humans do... The air passes by, soaks up the heat, and moves on along. There's zero difference. We use sweat as a means to more QUICKLY get rid of that heat, while a piece of electronic equipment uses helpful heat sinks made out of metal to do the exact same job. The greater the surface area, the more heat that gets dissipated, the more air that is passing by that surface area, the more heat that gets dissipated... plain and simple... Now then, sure the consoles are designed to do whatever in whatever location/situation. Big whoop. Did you also know that the things run better when cooled? Hmm? Sounds like something that'd be common sense, but I guess not. Sure it IS going to get hot. But heat kills electronics. Keeping something as cool as possible always and i mean ALWAYS extends its life... An xbox or ps that is always hovering around 90C isn't going to last as long as one that's constantly kept at 60C. Its just how it is. Its like an engine for a car... If it gets hot, it dies. Yet if you keep it cool, it'll last you nearly 100 years! Its just the way the universe functions. So every degree you can get that console cooler, the longer your console is going to last. Ontop of that, those consoles that actually have a 'turbo' or a 'boost' with their CPU/GPU/APU/Whatever, keeping it cooler means it can Turbo/Boost alot higher for a lot longer. AKA BETTER PERFORMANCE... Of which trust me......... Consoles need every tiny ounce of extra performance they can possibly get... considering how underpowered they really are. So in conclusion, yea sure, don't buy those things because they are poorly designed and don't actually do things entirely how they need to be done. But that doesn't mean that EVERY cooler out there is crap. Some perform the job perfectly fine. Just a matter of finding them.

Having a higher volume of air flowing past a heat sink does help though, it keeps the surrounding area as close to room temperature as possible which is good because heat sinks work more efficiently where there is a higher temperature gradient. Of course you're going to get diminishing returns by adding more and more fans. Having more air pressure also helps because there is just more for the heat sink to transfer heat to, though I don't know if you can really build significant amounts of pressure where that would help very much. On my PC I have three intake fans and one outtake plus my blower style GPU cooler, but I really don't think the third fan changes a whole lot, I mostly got the third one for aesthetics.

Honestly the best way to get sufficient cooling isn't targeting the fan that's preinstalled. Id recommend replacing the craptastic thermal paste they use to mass produce the consoles. The original thermal paste is like a rubbery coating over the cpu die, it's supposed to be more of a paste. When the thermal paste dries up it loses it's heat conductivity making the cpu hotter and making the temp sensor ramp up the fans to max speed. Thermal paste replacement will not only increase heat dissipation but it will help extend the max life of your fans and console. Now if you're afraid of taking your console apart then the only thing I could recommend it making sure it's in a well ventilated area.

I have a little USB powered desk fan that I put behind my switch dock and turn it on when I’m playing demanding games like BoTW. It certainly makes a difference. When I use the fan the console never gets more than warm. Without the fan it gets very warm almost hot. And with how close together all the components are that can’t be great for longevity letting it get that hot all the time.

Room temperature and space for ventilation is key in this matter. Maybe all you need is a fan to help circulate the air around your room. The colder your room, the cooler your console will run. Remember high humidity is harmful to all electronics. So dryer the air the better. Avoid direct sunlight exposure on your console as well. Also keep your console dusted and clean. Dust can build up in the vents and slow down or block airflow.

Agree with the fan on fan point. They are already designed to push hot air out unless the internal fan broke. But I will say having a fan literally blow on a console from a distance actually can help because your cooling the air before it goes in. This is obviously not what they are selling though. I used to have a house fan aimed at my 360 and it actually prevented it from RRODing on me, which it did all the time without it.

well, I agree that the fans are not needed, but more air passing through the hot parts of the console does cool it more. Look up forced convection for more info. I feel like everyone here is just forgetting about component longevity. Sure, running the system while it's hot is "fine" for a while, but over time the electronic components degrade. It's not just thermal throttling fam...Also positive air pressure in any computer, or console is a good thing, because it helps to keep dust from getting sucked into the system through the little seams in your system.

I agree with the fact that they’re not necessary and taking proper care of your console and giving it breathing room is the best thing anyone can do, but I wouldn’t call these external fans useless. Stacking two fans on top of each other likely will improve static pressure to get air through the heat sink better and provide some cooling benefit. Having an intake and exhaust fan working together will help move the air from one direction to the other better and exhaust heat more efficiently. There are some well-made cooling products that can extend the lifespan of a system, although there are some terrible ones as well that may do more harm than good if the fans blow in the wrong direction, poor design choices, etc.

The switch one is legit. I've had it fully overheat before and fail to work right. When this happens, which is as easy as leaving it in the car for literally 10 mins, the fans that expell the heat also overheat slowing to a crawl. It took hrs to cool down enough just to shut down or reboot. So having those extra fans to push more air into can really make a difference.

For those curious one fan on top of the other blowing air in the same direction is actually good because of basic thermodynamics. The thing he is talking about is still correct tho. The only way these coolers for consoles would actually do any good would be if u were able to match the exact rotational speed of the fan in the console expelling air and the fans u strapped on the back. And since this isn't a PC with PWM fan controls u aren't gonna be able to do this. Unless u open up both devices and desauter connections to make it work like that. But seeing as the console is supposed to run fine even in cramped spots the entire point of even doing the sautering work required to sync the EXACT speed of two fans is just pointless. So overall nice video even with what I said added your points still stand (Luckily). Good to see that...........

I have that same fan for the Switch. Before I got it, my system would get incredibly hot every time I played Mario Odyssey for only a few minutes. That never happened before with any of my other Switch games. Nintendo told me there wasn't much they could do and I should just keep an eye on it to see if it got worse. I ended up getting the fan for Christmas and, since I started using it, the system hasn't gotten anywhere close to as hot as it did before. So as far as the Switch is concerned, I wouldn't call it a garbage product. I still wouldn't get one for my Xbox or Playstation though. I learned my lesson from the damn Intercooler.

This is all about negative pressure vs positive pressure. If you can use intake fans to create positive pressure inside the case then you won't have hot spots. If you have an exhaust fan and create negative pressure then you have areas of dead space where the air doesn't move. In that configuration, the hardware layout is more critical.

The Switch was tested by several people, how much temperature it can take. Granted, even when all the ventilation slits were permanently blocked, it was hard to make the thing stop working. This console does not at all have an overheating problem, not mobile, not inside the original dock. As it is correctly said - if the console works as expected, it's not overheating, hence no problem. And no problem can not be solved. Still, as the tech nerd that I am, I removed the original compound between processor and cooling unti with a liquid metal compound. This is nothing like necessary, but I have good feeling when I know, that the whole cooling system works even better now, and the processor staying even cooler. The practical use though is, slower running cooling fan, which results in a tiny bit of longer battery life. And the knowledge of having a technically advanced system is nice, because I am seriously not a fan of that common compound everybody uses today, which looks like some weird half-liquid plastic. And it was not very hard to get to the processor and cooling unit of the console. Tearing apart the joycons and putting them back together is far more complicated.

I've been thinking about making a crazy zombie switch and fabricating a small liquid cooling loop for it. Of course it wouldn't have a screen and would be HDMI only but hey maybe it would stay at max quality more often if not always.

You haven't thought about one specific thing called dust. If you console only has one outtake fan the console will have a negative air pressure allowing dust to get inside much more easily. If you have a stronger intake than outtake fan you've got a positive pressure and thus dust from the outside is less likely to get in, unless your intake does not have a dust filter. And blowing air on something makes it cooler. Just look at your PC cooler. You've got heatpipes that transfer the heat to the fins which heat the air around it . The fan removes this hot air and "replaces" it with fresh cold air, which can heated up again. Your radiator in your car works exactly the same.

Feel like the warping for the Switch is a different matter, its nothing to do with overheating the components and more about the plastic bending after extended use. Someone already showed the switch shuts off at 67C, doesn't mean the plastic won't start warping after how ever many hours at 60 though...

I would agree the fan placement and directions is very important. My Xbox one x, after longer then average gaming sessions with new games or UHD video, started shutting off by it self. When turned back on it would immediately shut off. My cabinet has many ventilation holes, but no fans. It got much hotter then normal in the cabinet. So I placed a fan for sitting hot laptops on your lap underneath the Xbox and that amount of air flow seems to have done the trick. I believe all’s it is doing is pushing enough air so the heat doesn’t just keep building. I ended up installing a cabinet fan in the top section to spit out any warm air rising to the top and haven’t had an issue since. Loved the video! Subscribing

The Switch also has a battery, important distinction from a/c supplied consoles. Batteries don't like heat, so dropping temperatures does have notable advantages.

In the switches case you don’t really run any risk of heating up anything in the console. Majority of the extra heat will be in the power brick, not the console!

I'm using a cooling pad for my gaming laptop, since it is a custom build and thus I'm not sure if all components are getting enough air. But since laptops suck in the air from the bottom and blow it out to the rear or sides, just elevating it off the ground already helps to give it more air.

I actually do have a small fan that I put on top of my Xbox one because it gets super hot in the summer and this small fan does actually help because it helps suck the hot air out of the console faster than the internal fan can expel it, therefore removing the heat faster so the console can keep slightly cooler. Trust me it does work, I’ve tried without it and the Xbox gets so much hotter

I can tell you from experience that YES they DO WORK. Depending on which one you buy. If you have ever built your own PC or upgraded yours, you would know about how fans work. Same principle when it comes to consoles. The external fan takes the load off the internal fan to lengthen the life span and allow the console to work less. I have used external fans on both my Xbox 360 and my Xbox One. Also, it's not that I think it's overheating. I know after a long gaming session your Xbox can over heat and cause performance issues in some games. Sorry, I don't know where you got this information (was brought here through autoplay after watching Xbox One fan mods), but you are wrong to say that they are completely unnecessary.

The end point of what he is saying is. The consoles are made well enough that these things are uneccesary and if there is an issue its either a fault with the console. Way its stored. Ect... The console is made well enough to handle things under a high % of variables. There are many fans that push air in when they are over vents to take it out. You can buy a fan i forget the brand but there's a ton. Its essentially a fan you would put in a PC but attached to a stand. I put that a few inches behind my PS4 in a specefic direction because of its proximity to a breaker box for the Dev kit attachment which gets hot, and the PSVR to pull out hot air and direct it away from the systems and attachments. I do this because of my setup and the newest development kit addition for testing is very hot most of the time.
