Why do humans rule the world? What is it that makes human beings more capable of controlling their environment than any other species? And why do these same traits cause us to misunderstand reality in ways that could be destructive for all life on Earth? If we can understand what our unique powers are and harness them, then we may be able to find the solutions to our ecological crises that have long eluded us.

0:00 - What Makes Humans Different From Other Animals?
2:14 - What Enables Humans To Cooperate Better Than Other Animals?
3:34 - The Mechanism That Underlies All Forms Of Human Cooperation
5:50 - Why Humans Control The World
Transcript:
70,000 years ago our ancestors were insignificant animals. Today, in contrast, we control this planet. And the question is , How did we turn ourselves from insignificant apes into the rulers of planet Earth?
Usually, we look for the difference between us and all the other animals on the individual level. I want to believe that there is something special about me that makes me so superior to a dog, or a pig, or a chimpanzee. But the truth is that if you take me and a chimpanzee and put us together on some lonely island and we had to struggle for survival, I would definitely place my bets on the chimpanzee.
The real difference between humans and all other animals is on the collective level. Humans control the planet because they are the only animals that can cooperate both flexibly and in very large numbers.
Now there are other animals like the social insects - the bees, the ants - that can cooperate in large numbers but they don’t do so flexibly. Other animals, like the social mammals, the wolves, the elephants, the dolphins, the chimpanzees, they can cooperate much more flexibly, but they do so only in small numbers because cooperation is based on intimate knowledge of the other.
All of the huge achievements of human kind throughout history (moon, pyramids) have been based not on individual abilities, but on this ability to cooperate flexibly in large numbers. What enables us alone of all the animals to cooperate in such a way?

It's good to knock Elon down a peg in the minds of the collective, and to build them up. If only the masses knew how powerful they are together, and how unreal most of the collective beliefs are...

Exactly, alot of what we embrace as truths are only true on our human level, but they don't exist objectively

Very interesting. Social norms, becoming traditional norms becoming underlying concepts that are "invisible" truths that guide and define our world. Very nice narrative. The question is how do you break habits. It is beautiful to understand the picture of the problem but to destroy that picture and create another that is even more splendid with an ability to override a past and rewrite a future is the trick. There are many very shortsighted brilliant people in this world. With tunnel vision brought on by repetition and resistance to change. I loved the video though. It is thought provoking

This is such a powerful message....The proof of this is in the speed at which vaccines to fight COVID-19. were developed and brought to the world faster than it has ever been done. This happened because they cooperated and worked together. Its unfortunate humanity fails to generalize this type of learning.

Cultural co-operation has enabled humans to sidestep biological evolution. It has not, however, selected against problematic elements of human psychology.

Mr. Harari needs to hang out with humans who'd lead that chimp on the lonely island by dazzling its attention with magic, then captivating it with a narrative. Not zero sum. Humans can communicate with other animals, including other humans. We can collaborate and share stories with more than humans but many of us forget that. Many of us are learning to collaborate with machines too.

Yuval you are wrong to generalize, what you say is partially true, the citizens of the Andes: one of the world's ancient civilizations (5400), and 27 thousand years of existing and creating a culture base on the enchanting interlocking with nature and the people, never slavery never. Our process is the antipode of occident (Egipt, Mesopotamia etc. etc) and on top, we develop completely in our own with no contact with other cultures so have 2000 different culture developing together

So, human decided the rules, now the rules are found to be inapropriate. The new question is, what rule would rule the human? Because human are so free thinker that can believe in anything, at some point there is a need for a limit. Defining, setting and respecting that limit is a global world challenge. Could a rule be to force every countries in the world to lock/protect say 30% of it's territory from everything human built. Idk, that seems like not enough, and at the same time almost unreachable...

Don't confuse free thinking with multi layered thinking. We don't think freely, just differently. We're are tied into our delusion, we don't control it. Try living without money and see how free you really are.

@@TheCompleteGuitarist Of course in term of autonomy in the wild, we s... Put almost anyone in the forest, he will struggle alot. Personnaly, I try to see money as some sort of exchange in service. In the sense that, you can do something you are good at and accumulate some service points such that you can buy services that you are not good at. In some ways, money makes it simpler in the everyday life because you don't have to think about going in the field for gathering food, walk to the well to get water, feed sheeps and shear wool to sew your cloths, cut wood to build your home, etc. You could create some artistic stuff, sell it, and use that to pay for what you need. At small and medium scale it works, but yeah at large scale where people just have so much money that they don't need to work anymore for what they get, it doesn't work. In a sense, when you grow up and save money for your older days, it's like buying yourself futur services.

The pitiful fact is that we DO NEED that fictional reality. It is overly simplistic to believe that humans will ever reach that state of concerted action to bring about real change.

Animals don’t have consciousness of humans. God is in control. Of man, animals, and all creation. He intended our minds and dominion and free will. He is the entity of the imagination. ✝️

The last statement is false. Animals that live an objective reality live dignified lives. Sharing the fruits of mankind between the collective will only mean that NO ONE will live a dignified life. It will drag those floating on the labour of others down to the level of others. You're looking for paradise in the wrong direction. We just came from there.
