We have the same "problems' in the audio hobby. You've got music lovers who enjoy great music and you've got audiophiles who yearn for the best gear and never listen to music.
@mozzman

I think audio is a different beast. There are many that don't seem able to dissect audio in order to even understand the basics of sound reproduction whereas an audiophile by definition is obsessed with nuance and transparency. Both (and there are certainly other demographics) can spend an infinite amount of money on gear but the desired outcome is a personal preference just as it is with music itself.

The ironic thing is that 24fps was chosen for movies because it was the slowest film speed that would still provide acceptable results. It was chosen as the preferred film speed solely because of cost and not because of image quality.

Sorry to say, but that's not true at all. In fact 16 fps used to be the de facto framerate until sound came in, and back then, indeed 16 fps was used because it was the bare minimum necessary to see movement nicely. BTW, this is not something you can try today with a 60Hz screen, nothing to do with real projection at 16 fps, it will look way worse. When sound syncronization came into play, there were multiple systems, but Vitaphone won and 24 fps was established as the standard from there onwards. It was not only based on cost, but based on highly technical limitations and the engineering solutions found at the time to solve those and project not only image, but sound at the same time.
@hbp_
@hbp_ 10 ай бұрын
@@alfonsodam If we start nerding: Well actually, the frame rate was often variable to save film, as it was easy to crank (or adjust electronically) at the right speed on playback. Audio wasn't a concern because it was presented live, which was typically just music.

I recently watched the first 'Rocky' movie which was made way back in the '70s'. I was amazed at how much grain was in the low light footage, which could be considered very poor quality. Yet the story grabs you right at the start and the movie itself is one of the great classic movies of all time. It really looks like it was made with a cheap camera and one light!!! I love that movie, all the first four. Their story and the characters. The cinematography is great. And never I think about grain in those movies. There is a difference between like 8mm film and 35mm film. But give good creative person to do the content and it doesn't matter. I really need to go look rocky again to see where it has grain you talk about, as I wouldn't be able to say any scene top of my head where it is obvious. Maybe because I love grain, as you can create additional visuals with it. I am now considering buying the Star Trek The Next Generation in Bluray remastered. Where they scanned all the original episodes films and improved some of the effects. I have the VHS collection, DVD collection and soon Bluray collection. And oh boy do I love good acting and good lighting. One my favorites is 12 Angry Men... Basically whole movie is done in one room with 12 character.

Similarly, I just rewatched "Stray Dog" (1949) by Akira Kurosawa. Plot: rookie cop on a crowded bus has his pistol stolen. In a tracking shot where the cop pursues the thief, the camera is so shaky you'd think Mount Fuji was erupting during the shoot, and undoubtedly most KZbinrs would run to their safe space and pray their gimbals and IBIS never fail. After a few moments the hobbyist in me who is certainly not immune to the temptation of better specs realized that the instability of the shot did not detract in the slightest; it only heightened the manic dynamic energy of the shot. Let us not forget: Sgt. Pepper was recorded on 4 track.

Being a video amateur and having a few video mics, I can tell that the most important in the field or run and gun are dead cats/wind muffs. Also, whenever I have a choice, I prefer stereo vs mono for a better presence in the field, on the streets, on the beach, or in the forest. Also, I am surprised how huge, bulky, and inconvenient is a pro audio connector (except for studio, probably), truly a monster from the fifties or so. As for KZbinrs, it is crazy they want to be cinematographers and keep using 24 fps thinking it is ''cinematic''.

I always wanted to make documentaries, so around three years back I started learning how to do it and man was I in for a shock. There is so much BS on YT when it comes to which camera and gear to buy. Forget hardware, you will be confused as shit if you search YT for which NLE to use for editing, you will find a million videos selling Premiere Pro and other million selling Davinci Resolve. Thanks to these KZbinrs obsessing about 10 bit 4:2:2, dynamic range, Log, RAW etc., I spent my hard earned money like crazy on the stuff I never ended up using. But then I found your channel, started watching you regularly and realized that all of that doesn't matter at all. What matters is that you got a story and passion to tell that story. You have been an immense influence in my life as an amateur documentary filmmaker and I would like to thank you for that Markus. It is sad that people like Marcus is minority, almost like a unicorn in the industry. Those who find similar via experience are silenced by those who jump to marketing wagon. There were some who started about photography content, the style and history. But even they slipped to the latest and greatest tech very quickly, and started to talk about tools instead of methods. That is what Marcus does to stand up above others, not giving up own skills and talents in sake of selling. Like look at the new Sony A9 with global shutter. It is like world would have been remade by the reviewers opinions, that how radical change there is now coming. Mainly how you can now change flash photography and get darkened backgrounds and use the widest apertures etc. And what can be done, when the majority is tricked that only latest and most expensive technology will make it. I find it insulting toward consumers where previous tech owners are underrated and cut off by those who should get the latest toys.

Hi Markus, your words gave me a happiness you can't imagine. I always thought exactly what you said in your video. I am a professional photographer and I work in a big and famous French news agency. I started as a freelancer and then became a contract worker, and this made all the passion and efforts to realize myself as a photographer not in vain. Indeed just by suffering and having little money to work with you end up with uncompetitive equipment, but as you say and as I have always thought, things come from the heart and the head. It strikes me how even today in the agency other photographers are always discussing technological innovations, which camera is better than the others, optics, batteries, tripods, monopods, etc. etc. I at 60 still use my old GX1 M4/3, and I am proud of it. I go on vacation with the last gift from my mother, a photography enthusiast, a few months before she died, (a very used Leica Q2 because it was too expensive for her) just to feel her close, still present. This is to say that passion, feelings and artistic vision, you have to find them in yourself, and that is what you will try to convey to people with images, it is absolutely not the medium you use that gives you the ability to get there. Thank you again for taking the time to sing your video to make young and old understand the reality of working with photographic and video images.

Well said Markus. There are many of us that follow you, care about your beautiful enthusiasm and appreciate your quality information. But we rarely if ever comment. Why should we? Enough is already said. There are nearly 4000 comments on this post alone! I have been a photographer for nearly 40 years and only recently found your channel . I have watched quite a few of your videos but the where you told your life story was most intriguing. You have built your life on doing the right thing and following your Joy, but others are not there yet and they need your example. Don’t loose heart. Be like the sun, shine your light us all and eventually we all will be lifted. Thank you for doing what you do .

Have a smashing holiday and I hope you two get everything you asked Santa for! Haha! Sean

110% agree. Literally every Award winning DP and Lighting Director would agree with Marcus. I remember Roger Deakins in a lighting class say "what's the resolution (pixel count) of a Monet" ..yet they are stunning works if beauty. He made the challenge that he could reproduce any lighting with one source light a white card and a black card.... and he did it. Cinematography is an art form and the reality is not everyone will be good at it.

I'm not even a photographer, and this is one of my ABSOLUTE favorite channels. You Markus are a true artist. I love art in all forms, so when I see a new video drop on one of your channels, everything stops. I need to watch it. :-) One of these days, I will get a pocket camera. Right now I use my phone. LOL I just made a couple videos this morning using the light I got from you. :-)

Hey Markus, please don't stop sharing your wisdom and epic life stories, you definitely inspired me to keep it humble with the gear ! After watching your videos I got the cx405 and try to make the best of it with separate audio and lights , I'm happy about it, I only make videos to document my life for myself, family and friends in mind just like when I grew up in the 80/90's, I only upload it for convenience. I still regularly have consumer fever and check out videos to upgrade my gear and splash out some cash but people like you bring me back to reason, I take deep breaths, calm down and instead try to master my equipment better and focus more on what I want to say and how to deliver it better, so thank you !

Markus, your passion for your craft shines through in all your videos. Your art comes from deep within your soul. The fact that you are willing to share your heart, soul and knowledge with others who want to learn and listen is a gift. Folks need to learn to appreciate a mentor/teacher who wants to help others become better and to appreciate and use the tools they have at the moment. Bigger, better, newest does not make one the best at their craft. Heart and soul brings it all together. Please don’t leave KZbin because of the naysayers. They are the ones lacking the heart and soul it takes to master their craft. ❤❤❤

I know I'm just 1 person, but hopefully this gets to you. I only started getting into photography/video 5-7 years ago. I did it because I'm now almost 60 years old and I wanted to start capturing my family's life. Not just taking 100 pictures a month on a cell phone and then never looking at that photos again. That can be overwhelming and no one has the patience to go back through to pick out the 2 photos that are really worth keeping. So, I started making making videos to post on youtube for just my family to see. They weren't good. So, I looked for help. Found your channel and instantly started making better quality videos based on your information. Then I thought I needed to get better equipment to go to the next level, but you talked me out of that by showing how to do better quality with equipment I already had around the house. I learned from you it is all about technique, not products. You saved me thousands of dollars that I don't have . My family loves what I do because it is from me and my heart. I think that is what your channel is about. Your love of the craft and your willingness to help others by sharing what you've spent your whole life doing. Please don't stop. My years old Canon M50 appreciate it. I've almost replaced it several times, but like you say, "It's not the camera, it's the content". Thank you for your channel. Thank you for your knowledge. Thank you for your heart. And thank you for staying strong and not listening to the people that don't get it. There are plenty of people that love and respect what you provide for free. It's worth thousands, or more, to many of us that need it. Thanks again!

I certainly hope that you do not end the channel. This past week I delivered a project that I knew would end up on KZbin I rendered in in 720 and they thought it was great. You are spot on about sound and light being the most important . My experience in this area of art is similar to mine. Years of photography and now video and photography. What people do not consider what is the end user going to display it on. I shot 12 megapixel photos that ended up on billboards. I didn't need the 50 megapixel camera because it was not ending up in a museum.

Could not agree more. I am not a video creator. I lean towards stills and it is kind of relaxing for me mentally when I shoot. I was always taught if you take bad photos with the camera you have, when you buy a more expensive you will still take bad photos. All cameras have the basics and you need to learn the skill and when you learn it you will shoot great with all cameras, even film cameras. Thanks brother.

This is true. Back in the 70's I went to night school to learn the basics of photography. Purely manual film based cameras where you had to set the ASA (ISO today) aperture, shutter speed etc as well as the type of film you wanted to shoot with. I remember learning about composition, the rule of thirds, lighting was probably the most important consideration, then it was the quality of the glass you used. The camera was last on the list. The creative part was up to you. Once you had knowledge of F stop effects, shutter speeds, and exposures generally, you could try developing your creative skill set. The cool thing is, most of what you learn and discover can be passed over to moving image with just a few new things to learn. The creative part is down to the user, though today's digital technology has made the camera far more flexible. You don't have to waste expensive film with mistakes. You can get things right with ease nowadays. Understanding the basics of photography has ALWAYS helped me. Going to night school was money in the bank.

Absolutely love the message in this episode. I'm still learning to communicate in my videos. Being uncomfortable with being vocal, I've been using subtitles. Recently, my wife's cancer returned and took the wind if my sails. I have countless videos to edit and release but find it difficult to sit and edit trying to create positive content as I'm focused on taking care of my wife. Your message is inspiring. I hope one day my wife recovers and I can continue to release content. My last video I spent a wonderful time in Cancun. We returned only for the doctor to give us the bad news. Don't stop- you absolutely rock. You're one of the people who inspire me to explore the artist in me. God bless!

I had a Canada Council grant for photography before I went to film school in 1982. I agree with you 100% 💯 ! Part of the problem with modern Hollywood is the reliance on superficial things and less about the humanity that is the foundation of good art. We have senses, but they are just tools that help us understand and, ultimately, how we FEEL. When I watch your videos, I feel your passion, and I feel things more deeply. Bravo for your heartfelt rant! Hurray! Thank you. Thank you. God bless you and yours.

A video or an image must convey a message through emotions. When we look at souvenirs from 30 years ago, we don’t focus on image quality, but we remember the moments and reminisce about the past. That’s invaluable!

This is the truth. Thank you Markus. After I saw this video, I cried a lot. I was so ashamed of myself for the way I thought in the last years. Years in which I spent several hours every day on KZbin looking for the perfect camera, listening to some people who have no other purpose than to attract you to watch their videos, people who make money from KZbin, but who have nothing in common with art. This video changed my life forever. This is the truth. Thank you Markus.

Not spending too much on the camera body is also critical for budget, and budget can stop you before you even have a chance. I spent 10.5% of the budget on the camera bodies. The 100% includes everything you need to light, record video and audio, and edit, a computer, active monitors etc. My application is a 3-camera studio shoot that can support a large set representing interiors in homes/offices, etc, or 3 small ones, but that does not change much. Don't go into buying equipment for video thinking you only need a camera.

Thanks for speaking the truth! I got into film because I started with photography and my start in photography was with a basic Canon XTI Rebel with a stock lens. I took better photos than all my peers back then and kept getting booked repeatedly by the same clients. My peers had all the fancy $5k cameras and lighting equipment and I had the most basic entry-level stuff. The difference was because of a few things, I gave them an experience with their shoots, meaning it wasn't a stuffy atmosphere where I only took one photo every 5 minutes because I was looking for the perfect camera setting. Instead, I figured out my settings before they arrived and made a mental note of them. Then I made the shoot fun and different by getting creative with the poses, the props, the outfits, and making it ARTISTIC and not boring typical photos. Just as you said, I shot EVERYTHING in jpg, nothing was ever shot in RAW. To this day, I still don't shoot in RAW. Fast forward to now, and I'm getting more into film and when I start chatting with folks, they just wanna get into all the tech talk with their gear and while that holds important to some extent, I was more focused on clean audio and the story and artistic style of the projects. My second KZbin channel is a paranormal investigation channel and we have literally about 40 cameras running when we do an investigation and none of them have the same color performance, or specs, but we still manage to make great content regardless of that. The only thing I make sure of for those videos is that we have all the cameras set to 30 fps. So, yes, I agree with you, you don't have to have all the fancy specs, bells, and whistles, you need to bring clean audio and some creativity to a film, not tech specs.

I got into photography as a teenager 20 years ago and was obsessed whether my digital camera purchase was going to be future-proof enough for that kind of investment. I bought a 40D (for indoor sports) and a good lens, but lost interest because I couldn't really do anything creative with light, everything was big and heavy, and I just couldn't afford all the crazy setup I would see on blogs like Strobist. I eventually got rid of everything and picked up an X100s because of the leaf shutter when mirrorless became a thing, but phones have become so good that I never really used it regularly. I recently discovered that there are so many awesome little speedlights now that are so cheap and you don't even need crazy radio triggers anymore because everything's built in. So I found your channel because I was looking for a light stand to use now that wireless off camera flash is something that's finally accessible for someone like me. You are so right when you say that the camera is the last piece of the puzzle. Happy you decided to keep this channel going-- looking forward to going through more of your stuff. Thanks!
