Advice I would give to DMs is that npcs are not a hivemind. They are individuals with their own wants and desires. They're not your hand to make things happen they're your actors to fill a role. It makes interacting with npcs not only fun but also engaging and helps drive a story.

The one thing I learned from my own pay to play sessions (I run convention games which tend to have like a 2 dollar entrance fee for the booth duties) is that people who pay to play games usually have a reason why they don't have someone who will play with them for free; and that usually, this is never a good sign.

For many of us who've "professionally" DMed, it's a way to defray the costs of the hobby - not a net money-maker. I'm sure a more business-minded person could strategize things to turn a profit, but I think either the game or the DM's sanity might suffer.

I guess you've headed this a thousand times, but there really is nothing to be scared of. We're all anxious when joining a new table and yes, sometimes it is a terrible expirience, but we all learn from it and try to improve for the next time. For new players I always recommend getting an experienced DM and one or two expirienced players (to help with notes and char sheets) with the rest being beginners. And never forget the first and most important rule of d&d: HAVE FUN! (it's even the first rule in the PHB)

I'm not sure if anyone will see this, but I was just thinking on it and I feel like its really important. Always, always have a session zero and talk about expectations for the game, and if you're a player with a novice dm, tell them promptly if they're missing something. I've had so many games fail because I thought the session zero was unnecessary, or it was rushed. And in all those games, my players would see me making a mistake (like forgetting to include enough description or whatever), but not tell me until it had been many sessions and it amounted to a stream of complaints justifying why they don't like the game.

I got into pay to play when i first got into online via roll20 (been playing pen and paper for 30+ years) and I actually really like it. I've left a couple of groups after a couple of games because of not feeling the group dynamics, but I finished one campaign after a year and a half with more or less the same group from second month or so and am in a new campaign with one of the other players (we wanted to continue with same DM but health reasons stopped him DMing after the 4th session). I also have a queer group that was the first I joined and we're almost 2 years in and on our third campaign and we're all friends. I think one thing I like about pay to play is that there's consistency for the DM to keep the games regular as it's income for them. It's certainly been a lot more regular than playing with my friend group. Plus with playing online, there isn't a burden of one or two members of the group to always host

One thing I've noticed with Roll20 or even D&D in general is the prevalence of homebrew and/or games that are far beyond what is advertised, with DM's that give minimal information of the lore or the rules and refuse to help players understand(especially new players). Or players will just bail mid-session and instead of finding a replacement or a solution, the game just falls apart, even if there's a party of 3 or more still playing. I've had this happen numerous times in roll20, but also in person at local game shops and, In my 11+years of trying to play D&D, I've NEVER had a campaign last long enough to get beyond level 3. I've given up on D&D and have moved on to other systems as a result and have found better communities in lesser known TTRPGS. My biggest piece of advice for DM's is get a group together and actually do a couple of session 0's and discuss EVERYTHING important to the lore/world, especially if the group is new to each other and get them talking/figuring out how their characters are involved with the plot and each other. Tossing people into a world with no context only works in video games and even then, only a handful have managed to pull it off.

I myself have quit Dm'ing, but not because of demotivation. I am a full time college student, and I also am known as "The Fun DM" in certain situations (Yes @Anime Boi, I am referring to you). It's a lack of time. I take 4 hours a day to plan a weekly campaign, and that leads to me spending about 24 hours to plan out a campaign that usually goes down the toilet after a certain character figures out how to make a saiyan in the game, destroying all possible balance between players and monsters. Heck, he killed the Tiamat monster from Fizban's BY HIMSELF, with no homebrew options at all. Honestly, I like to improvise, and recommend it to newer DM's who are struggling. Make up a monster in your head that fits the party, create a new race, etc. It all works. Some inside jokes and eventual homebrew came from improvising (such as the chicken breastplate armor lol).

To be quite honest, 50% of the success is on you, but the other 50% are determined by WHO the players are. If you want everyone at the table to have a great experience, you can't for example have one player who hates all roleplay and one who loves all roleplay. One persons fun is another's grief some times. I recommend if you dear reader ever do something like this choose carefully and find out first who these players are.

I’m running two campaigns for Patrons, many of whom we all consider mutual friends, for two separate tiers. I recommend that as a model, because you can run a campaign (provide a service) that you know your Community has a vested interest in. Running a game like this with Patrons also usually means they already have an interest in your work and/or content. One game is available to all tiers, and the other (Wildemount) is the highest tier. You can also stack on all kinds of extra goodies with Patreon!! ❤️🔥

I'm a forever DM who has been playing for a little over twenty years and finally started hosting pay for games after being hounded by my wife (who I met playing D&D) I must say it has been a mostly rewarding experience. I have six campaigns that meet at different schedules, from once a month, to weekly, and the people and groups I have meet are incredible. I only have one game left that is open to the public as all the others have a turned into a set group of friends. None of them even knew each other when we started, a few hadn't played in decades and a few were brand new. There have been some players that don't mix well with others and it is never fun asking a player to kindly leave but I would say 9-10 have been a great experience. I agree with FISTOproductions, if your curious about joining a session...... DO IT!!!

I'm dming for 24 years now. From D&D to Vampire to Shadowrun to Starfinder(and a lot more). And I still don't think that I'm good enough to dm professionally. I'm no Matt Mercer. Also being paid makes my players my customers. And I reaaaalllly don't want that. As you found out the hard way.^^ The time I need to prepare a campaign suited to my players can't be monetized. Otherwise players would need to pay me a lot more than 10bucks a session. If you add time and money for buying/printing minis/terrain/maps....oh boy, that would be insane. And don't get ne started on books. But I'm oldschool and running a premade campaign for strangers is really not my thing. Same goes for this weird "adventure league" stuff. Plunging right into P2P D&D is certainly another level. But it's a good thing you shared it, it's a fine lesson for newer DMs who toyed with the idea of going P2P.

Here's an idea for a campaign if anyone wanted to steal it... Imagine players are in a town of your choice, they have lived there for quite a while... Then they get a letter from a man in uniform, they go to the location and it turns out the letters have some writing on the back that when put together make a sentence which the players must speak to transport onto an island... This then leads to a few fights, notably with a pirate character; A prospector/Miner; A giant man and the king's piece on a chess board. They each have their own mechanics when fighting, for example the chess battle acts as normal chess but when a piece is captured they fight the other captured pieces and get to go back on board if they slay one... After beating each boss the island expands by making different parts rise... Along the way different story elements would be implemented but I'm just outlining it. Then this all leads up to final battle against an all powerful being that breaks the forth wall, addressing the characters by the names of their players (if you know them)... Then when the battle ends they make a choice to save the end boss or leave him on the island powerless as a death sentence. A mechanic I wanted to add but didn't was conscience. Conscience is d20 - wisdom mod. That is the role you must pass when making morally incorrect decions, like murdering a stranger or stealing...

3:19 Being honest, flanking can be too easily exploitable, by the players and by the enemies, but still, it's not something to react in such a harsh way. I mean, I remember one time where both my abjuration wizard and our rogue got into a deep trouble because of flanking, because I said, hey, I'm going to prepare mage armor and put myself in a place where I can help the rogue get advantage through flanking, only to get myself into that sittuation with the enemy, and when the rogue flanked said enemy too, he failed the attack roll (we had a lot of bad luck that day), and then, we were basically both binded in place because whoever moved would probably get two opportunity attacks and instantly fall unconscious (I think the rogue forgot the cunning action, because now that I'm reading it, I'm like, why didn't we do that to avoid the trouble? And I guess I could've disengaged, but forgot too about that, since we were kinda new). We basically made a flanking train, and we were the ones that got the worst trade because of really bad luck in the attack rolls (we didn't hit a single attack with advantage during the whole thing. We still remember it as the day that we were almost mauled to death by stray cat-like creatures)

I found D&D beacuse as an autistic gay furry nerd in Texas on the early 00's I was already an outcast, but I was in nowhere's vill USA and the internet was a thing but Google was only barely a thing so finding any books was almost impossible. Freinds and I had scraps of 3e and no real idea how to play, so 40-60% of the stuff was totally made up. Then I moved to just outside of Houston and D&D Next (what would become 5e) launched. I got what i needed to start and at my first real game store was told "Wow you are young for such cool homebrew" and I had no idea WTF that meant and when that became apparent everyone was confused. I played with this. I said presenting very little 3e books. Uhh... I make up most of it. It is more of a story than a game because holy balls this game was to complicated for me, this version is far easier and I have real books! I then got 150 dollars store credit if I just spent a few hours coming up with some games. I came up with... a lot of games and ran two intro sessions for the store but I had other stuff so I could not work at the store, but I did get a ton of stuff for free as I promoted the game and ran it as a hobby and giving me a free book means 4 other players would buy one so yeah that got me addicted AF as they now say and I finally had a freind group.

Last one, the guy loved session 1 and was so excited to explore the intrigue I had developed. Another guy, refusing to RP the whole session, informed me that he just wants to kill monsters, not spend 1/3 of the session talking. I actually do pay to play D&D games IRL in a Cafe. I'm not very good as a dm, the players just pay for their food and my DM fee. I usually end up spending my money on the Cafe's food haha

Baulders Gate is made by the same people as DND? I did play that game, and love dnd. But I never knew that.

Btw Blaine, I know you do a lot of anime into d&d stuff. I’ve been working on a hunterxhunter home brew class for nen users. I would love to cooperate!

This kinda has to do with the vid but I used to play dnd but then I moved to a country that where ever you look you won’t find dnd players and I can’t find any online campaigns because my time zone is … any advice?

I'm glad things worked out for you... But I'm also glad you hated trying to run pay-to-play D&D. I've DM'd a bit, but as someone with a lot more experience as a player, I hate that some DMs want to charge people for taking part in their games. I'm not really a fan of trying to find games on Roll20 at all, tbh. Though I'll use it if a DM wants to, I prefer to join D&D Discord servers and find games through them.

People don't know what BG2 is? :( BG1 was the first real game I ever had and it got me permanently addicted to everything Forgotten Realms. Sadly I have rarely gotten a chance to play D&D but I finally found a group recently. Everyone - go buy and play BG1+2!!!!
