In this anime video essay I discuss what makes Blue Box so addicting to watch. At first glance Blue Box seems to be a simplistic sports romance, but looking at the story further you quickly see how intentionally bending those genres together is the true success of the show.

Blue Box also understands Badminton. I used to play and compete in that sport and see myself in Taiki so much. The emotions portrayed in each shot are simply amazing.

I love your explanation regarding their respective sports being an important aspect and interest in their lives, and that it isn’t just there for display. What hooked me to blue box was how it was able to balance the realistic elements of sports and romance genre. Every character interaction feels so natural and not forced, it almost felt like I was with them. (All of this is coming from a guy that doesn’t even have romance as his favorite genre lmao) I binged the manga after episode 14 and I can say it was worth the read. I was smiling like an idiot as I was reading lol.

I’ve been so obsessed with this show since I first saw a video on it and I binged the show (only nine episodes were out at the time) and immediately started reading the manga to quench my thirst for more. After finishing it I just sat there wanting more wondering what was going to happen next. This is a fantastic story and the characters are used and written in such a way that you’re sad to see them lose after a match.

Very recently gave it a try on Netflix as I was intrigued about the sports/romance mix and the art looks beautiful. I got completely hooked, watch the whole anime content then have been devouring the manga. Definitely my anime/manga revelation of 2024 and completely invested in the characters/story. I’m in my 40s and grew up with classics like I”s and I realize now that I’m still a sucker for Shonen High School romance lol

I recently caught up with Blue Box, and it is now in my top 10 favorite anime. I love this story. Something I appreciate is how early in the series we don’t see Chinatsu’s point of view. That puts us in the same spot as Taiki because we the viewer know as much about Chinatsu as he does. It’s a neat way to frame the story. And when we do see Chinatsu’s point of view, it’s subtle yet present and we get more as the story continues. We the viewers learn more about Chinatsu in real time like Taiki. Looks like I need to get the manga.

Im obsessed with blue box that i binged the manga after 1st ep aired The manga was so interesting with different characters utilization in sports and roman aspects. Rooting for side characters along with main automatically makes it a mature story. The romance is mature and wholesome tbh, admiration to one another is the love they showcase.❤❤❤

I get what your saying so hard. I like to read manga a lot but at most times it takes me a few weeks to read one `cause I dont speak english as my native language. But I binged the entirety of Blue Box in two days. For the next 2-3 weeks i searched for a good manga wich would satisfy my needs but blue box set the expectations for everything to high. When I started this anime I felt that there was something different, the well-written mix of feelings, private life and passions of the characters left me speechless; the simple fact that a character is pushed to improve himself because the person he loves involuntarily pushes him to do so is so realistic. Blue box is very good however currently in the manga my big pet peeve is when they shift the focus from one relationship to another which in it of itself is fine however when they only do it for like one chapter and they’re basically shift it right back to the main pairing like a sorta remember them they’re still here when I’m already so invested with the other things going on in the story I get tired of the main characters for a bit. (I tried to speak really generally as to not spoil anything)

The best part of this series is that it has two of the best mentor characters I've ever seen and everyone feels like they have lives outside of the manga panels. Instead of putting filler in between the tropes, they have clear passages of time and they resolve it within a few chapters. (Note, google the Japanese school year. It helps to keep track of the time jumps). Also, everything feels like a catalyst for the relationships instead of a contrivance. And I'm not kidding when I say that they will resolve the "shit or get off the pot" trope in less than two episodes. I almost cheered.

If you want the romance/sports mix so i would say any of Mitsuru Adachi works. Touch is the most famous and Mix the most recent, I didnt read them but I read Cross Game who is also his and loved it

Pretty typical series ngl. I recommend Baby Steps manga for a more authentic romance even though the main focus is on the professional tennis career of the characters
