I am Dutch and I am happy in the Netherlands. But I lived also for quite some years in Africa. Sometimes I go there again for a holiday. And each time I leave the plane I inhale deeply and say to myself "I am back home". Don't ask me to explain. It's simply like that.

Your question really made me think. I can't recall ever having said those words myself, though I do vividly remember an old classmate from highschool yelling "go back to your own country" at some boy she caught trying to steal something from her bike's saddle bags. And a co-worker once said that to a Belgian co-worker, when the Belgian guy started complaining about something Dutch. 😅 Not sure what it was anymore. In this case the "go back" phrase was intended jokingly.

About birth control items: Yes they are not free; if you need the pill or any hormone driven anti-conception you have to pay a certain amount of money. But the cost is usually under 100 Euro /year and usually even (much) less depending on what anti-conceptie you will use.

I left the Netherlands in 1982 but not because I disliked the country. My wife is from the Bronx and, while she absolutely adored living with me in Denhaag, I thought it'd be better for us that we raise our family in the US. In retrospect., I'm not sure whether that was the absolute best solution, it worked for us.

Hi Kastoo, thanks for sharing your story. I’m glad your decision worked for your family. Do you still visit the Netherlands?
@kastooMcFry
@kastooMcFry Жыл бұрын
@Josphine Ogugua yes but more sporadically now. There's nobody left in Denhaag for me. That truly is what I'd consider home. My parents both passed on. My sibling moved to curacao and Germany. I usually stop by on business and may briefly visit. While I live in the US, I consider myself Dutch. The Netherlands holds my heart. I very much enjoy your perspective, seeing how well you adjusted to the country. That is not easy. I'd consider you a Dutchie as much as I am, fwiw. :)

So, to anwer your question, I have never said "go home" to an immigrant. That is not to say that I have some difficulties sometimes in my mind with some immigrants. I demand only two things. Respect our culture (you don't have to assimilate, just respect Dutch ways of thinking) and learn the Dutch language. As for your video, you have all the right in the world to look only at your own interests. But what I miss is the feeling of contribution to the society here. Your reasoning is very egocentric. Again, you have alll the right to do that. It is only something that disturbs me a little. This country is in my view not only "an opportunity generator".
@josphineogugua
@josphineogugua Жыл бұрын
Hi Ronald, thanks for your comment on this one. I think the two criteria’s you’ve stated are reasonable and a fair request… Regarding my opinion on why I’m not leaving, I wanted the video to focus mainly on the benefits I’ve had that made me decide not to leave yet. I do contribute to the Dutch society in the best ways I can and intend to continue to do so… but this was not the aim of the video hence why I didn’t share… Maybe in future videos I’ll throw more light on that😎

I don't think I would tell a person to go back to their own country. In some circumstances, perhaps I might _suggest_ they look into going back as a possibility. For example if they really don't feel at home here, or they miss their own country terribly, or they have useful skills and qualifications that perhaps might be put to far greater use in the country where they came from. (For example when they're doctors or other qualified medical personnel that for some reason cannot find work here, while their own country is screaming for medics). I wouldn't expect the kind of people that tell others to 'go back to their own country' to watch this type of video in the first place, though, so I doubt you're going to hear their perspectives here.

What are your views and opinions on the recent elections in Nigeria, including the unrest about the fairness of them? Just curious. Also, are you going to vote in the upcoming Dutch elections for Provinciale Staten and the Waterschappen? I think almost everybody living in the Netherlands can vote in the Waterschappen election, not sure if you specifically are allowed to vote for Provinciale Staten.
